Oh, I feel so guilty!

I just smushed a big old grasshopper. If you think everything is bigger in Texas, then you haven't seen a Florida grasshopper. This one was hiding on one of my Dracaena plants. They aren't too bad when they are little. They are kind of cute, in a Darth Vaderish way...

The start of about half and inch to an inch long and are almost pure black. Through the spring/summer they grow considerably and then turn into monstrosities!! Their coloring turns more earthy - kind of beige. Think Hopper from Bug's Life. Last year one grasshopper put a big hurting on a plant in our front landscape. I don't know the name of the plant, but I think it's a type of lily.

Anyway, I feel horrible about killing them (I don't want to kill anything) but I also don't want them munching on my plants. When they reach adulthood, they are really gross! Anyone else have these mixed emotions? When we get aphids, I just look for ladybugs and relocate them to the troubled areas.

If I see another one, I'll post take a picture of it to show you what they look like.

I hear they make good fishing bait..

A hispanic co-worker has dubs on mine -- she likes to fry them up and dip them in mollasses! EEEEEeeewww!!
Those gnarly destructive beasts are geting their "just desserts" -- LOL!!!

I have no guilt whatsoever -- the only good grasshopper is a dead one, IMO! At least this way, i don;t have to bombard my garden with a lot of chemicals (whoch don't work anyway!)

Hey, shep! Maybe the sharks would like them! I never thought of that!!!

Yay2001 - YUCK!!!!! I don't know how anyone could eat one! Even fried and dipped in molasses! Just be careful around the holiday season if your coworker brings in some home made sweets to share! ;)

I ate a chocolate covered grasshopper (a little one) when I was young. My dad gave it to me but didn't tell me what it was until I'd eaten it.............

TigH, I look forward to seeing your picture. If the grasshoppers grow like the elephant ears in your other pic, I have one question..........WHAT THE HECK DID YOU KILL IT WITH???? :D

Kim :)
