We've never had to use a wheel chair at wdw before but this year my granny will be going so she will need one.i heard that we could get one at the resort for free is this true???

The wheelchairs at the resorts are first come/first served, and cannot be resrved. They could also be the wrong size for someone - too big or too small. It's not something I would count on.

It is true they are free (or that is the experience we had at AS Movies), but as the other poster stated, they are first come first served. They have both the regular size (adult) and large size (adult). I too would recommend renting from offsite, then you would have it available for the whole trip.

I've never had problems getting hold of a resort wheelchair the right size, but I know other people have. As has already been said, you can't reserve them ahead of time. Also, the resort chairs are a lot heavy than most of those from off-site, and often have odd veers to them. Also, be aware that, though the rental is free, the hotel will take a card imprint as a deposit (not claimed unless you fail to return the chair).

One thing you could do, if you wanted to possibly save some money, is to go to the resort and see if they have a chair available. If they don't, then you can ring around the rental companies and get one from off-site then. This is not a fail-safe idea, as there is a chance that you might get stuck without a chair, but I think it's fairly unlikely that every rental company in the area will be completely out. If you decide to go this route, make sure you have all the phone numbers of local rental companies with you before you leave. You will find them listed in the FAQ at the top of this board.

Good luck and have a great time! :goodvibes

I agree with the other posters.
It is possible get a wheelchair from the resorts, but even Disney says on their website that if you need one, you should rent from one of the off-site companies.
So, if having one at the resorts is not vital for your granny, it will probably work out OK to get one from the resort. But, if she will need one both at the resort and the parks, I would not take the chance.
If you do, I would suggest taking the phone numbers of multiple off site companies with you. Better to have them in case you need them.
