Grandparents...names?

I am Nonnie to my granddaughter. Her parents let all the grandparents choose their own name. Her other grandmothers are called Grandma Becky and Grandma Kate. Her grandfathers are Grandpa and Pappy.

I picked Nonnie because they lived far away when her parents were expecting and I seldom saw them. I figured since we rarely saw each other I would be anonymous to her, hence Nonnie. Fortunately, they moved closer and now live only five hours away.

We called our grandpareents, Grandmother last name and Grandfather last name. And both sets had the same last name but for some reason we always knew which ones we were talking about. It was so formal but it worked.

I don't have any grankids from my daughter but my grandkids from my step children all call me "Gamma" and DH grandpa. They call their other grandparents Grandma and Grandpa.

The grandkids know I am a nurse and take care of babies. One of the grandsons had a lesson in school where they talked about how the gamma knife was used in surgery and asked me if they named the knife after me.

Gotta love their thought processes.

No grandkids here yet, and none on the immediate horizon. However, I'll probably be called "Nana" because that's the tradition in my family.

My maternal grandfather was a doctor, so we called him "Doc." It therefore follows that his wife, my maternal grandmother, would be "Nana Doc." We called my paternal grandmother "Nana B." because her last name (like ours) started with a B. Interestingly, all the other grandkids in the family (21 of them) always called her "Grammie."

My maternal great grandmother was "Nana Dodson" as that was her last name.

My DD calls DH's mom "Grandma" or "Grandma Sue" as do all the other grandkids (11 grands, 7 great grandkids). DD calls his bio-father "Grandpa Al" as all the other kids do and his adopted father "Grampa" although she hasn't seen him in 17 years. My DD called my mom "Nana" because that's what we do on my side of the family!

Like I said, no grandkids here! We took DD to the Food&Wine Festival to celebrate her 21st birthday!

My kids call both sets of grandparents Grandma and Grandpa, which is what they each chose to be called. If clarification is needed, they use Grandma Lastname, which is how I referred to my grandparents, too. (Although I only had one living grandparent when I was born so I didn't have to differentiate much.)

My son was the oldest grandchild and used to refer to my dad as 'Pa.' The younger kids followed suit. He called the other grandfather Grandpa (or some variation), so it wasn't that he couldn't say it. My dad liked having his 'special name,' and I think my mom was a little jealous that she was just plain ol' grandma. Sadly, 'Pa' fell off somewhere and he's Grandpa now. (The youngest grandchild is 10 now.) I think he kind of misses 'Pa.'

My husband called his grandmothers Grandma and Gram. He called both grandfathers 'Grandpa,' and used first names to differentiate.

My grandmothers were Grammy and Nana. My mother was Nana and my mother-in-law was Granny. I would have gone with Grammy but my grandson's other grandmother uses that. She lives 30 minutes away from him and has seen him less than 10 times in his 2 1/2 years so there was no way I wanted the same name.

I went with Nanny. I provide his care when his parents are at work so the name fits. He doesn't have a lot of words yet but recently started calling me 'eee'.
