Grandpa vs. sofa bed

We are planning our visit to WDW this October and we are inviting my dad (Grandpa to the kids) along for the trip. We are considering staying the BCV but he would wind up sleeping on the couch bed (my MIL is also coming and she gets the queen bed). I have slept on couch beds before and there are couch beds and then there are couch beds: sometimes they are good enough and sometime you are better off sleeping on a bed of nails . So, I am very worried that we condemning my dad to a week of sleeplessness if we wind up at the BCV.

So my question to the DISboards community: How are the couch beds for a grandpa (he is about 69 years old)? Maybe rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being a bed of nails and 10 being upstairs at Cinderella's castle)?

I spent 4 nights on the sofa bed at Kidani, I would give it a 6. Not the worst I've slept on as the mattress is a bit thicker than the average sofa bed. But honestly I was so beat every night from the parks that I was just happy to be horizontal.

I am 65. If my children put me on a sofa pull-out bed, I would LEAVE! No one over the age of 30 belongs on a pull-out!!!!!

I slept on the pull out bed at Jambo house and would never, EVER sleep on one again. I did ask for an extra mattress and they brought me one of those foam ones. Of course they put it on the "real" bed so we had to move it. If you do end up at BCV, ask for one....or two....or three for Grandpa.

My adult kids who are in their 20's slept on the pull out sofa at OKW and were miserable. I'd give it a 5.

I'd get several rooms instead of a villa. That way everybody gets their own comfy bed and bathroom. You can usually get connecting rooms. I'd never put my dad on a pull out couch.

I agree no sofa bed for anyone over 30! How about your dad and MIL have a regular room at Beach Club.

Well, the hope was that being a deluxe resort and all, they would have decent couch beds. But, from the sounds of it, even WDW isn't posh on that end of things. We want to get the 2 room villa but I can't quite figure out why they don't have 2 queen beds in the second bedroom - seems like a no-brainer to me. BLT has them - why not BCV?

We just wanted everyone to be able to be in the same living quarters and the kitchen is a definite plus.

Perhaps I'll just get a nice air mattress for my wife and I and give the king to my dad. It's what we do anyway when he visits us. Or maybe we will just go for the BLT.

My mother found it very hard to get up and down on the sofa bed. She almost fell each time at the BCV.

The cushions stay on the couch and are in the way at the side of the bed.

Not all the sofa beds are the same at each DVC resort. I find none of them comfortable for any adult. Comfortable sofa beds do not exist. Getting more than one topper is about impossible, as they have to let others have them to and everyone wants one.

BCVillas do have some with two queen beds but not many due to the shape of the rooms and they are booked by DVC members. If you want two queens in the second bedroom you would have to book, any DVC resort other than BCV and BWV.

BLT sounds SOOOO wonderful to me! Although I do see the beauty of being able to walk to Epcot if you stayed at BCV. I read online that BCV has 78 dedicated 2 bedrooms and 74 lock off 2 bedrooms. Are the dedicated units still a king room and the second bedroom with a queen and sleeper? I would have thought the dedicated might be 2 queens.

Also even though I posted earlier I wouldn't want to sleep on the sleeper, my kids have and I would say they are nicer than most pull out sleepers....I just don't think nice enough for your dad.

At BCV, some of the dedicated 2 bedrooms have the 2 queens and some have 1 queen and a sofabed in the second bedroom. You have to specifically reserve the 2 queens. I believe the 2 queens are only available with a DVC points reservation. Only 25 of the dedicateds have the 2 queens.

I say grandad gets the king and you and spouse get the sleeper sofa. Think of all he has done for you! It's about time for a little payback...

The sleeper sofa at BCV is a better than the one at OKW or SSR. It is not the foam type pad. It is a bit more substantial mattress. It flips from the back the the cushions help support the foot of the bed, so they don't come off. I'd say he is going to be okay on it.

But if you can book OKW, you'll get two real beds in the second bedroom. Both queen beds. Or add a studio. But if Dad and MIL are not spouses and can't share a bedroom, see about leaving one at home for this trip and bringing one on your next trip. That's what we did.

Not all BLT 2 bdrms have them. The dedicated 2-bdrms have them, but the lock-offs do not. There are more lock-offs than dedicated. OKW is the only villa where all 2-bdrms have 2 queens in second bdrm.

I have slept on the Saratoga sofa sleeper (with my daughter who was a toddler at the time). I am way over 30 and thought it was fine. My kids have slept on one at Kidani and did not complain but they could sleep anywhere. A larger/heavier adult might not be comfortable. So it wouldn't be odd for Grandpa and Grandma on 2 different sides of the family to share a room? One option would be for your wife to share the king bed with her mom and then the OP shares the second bedroom with his Dad. Dad (Grandpa gets the real bed) and OP gets the sofa sleeper? I assume kids are on the living room sofa sleeper?

I slept on a BCV studio sofa bed last month & I'd rate it a 5. I was only on it for 2 nts but couldn't have done much more. Honestly the sleepers chairs at BLT & Kidani (I hear they're at Jambo & OKW now too) were much more comfortable, but smaller, just a twin mattress.

Personally, imo, its not about whether the pull-out is comfortable or not it is about respect. Out of respect I would never put my Dad, my childs grandpa, on a pull-out. He didn't work hard all his life and raise me right to be down-graded to a pull-out I would sleep on the pull-out before him.

I would work something else out that meant my dad could sleep on a bed.

But thats just me.

I own at BCV and some of my adult children have had to endure the sofa bed from time to time. Each one has said never again (they are in their 30s). Now I get studios for everyone rather than 2 2 bedrooms.

The dedicated 2 bedrooms with 2 queen beds are only available for points reservations and since we are 6 months out from October, even making a points reservation for a dedicated 2 bedroom at BCV during F&W would be next to impossible.

I have slept on the couch (without pulling it out to the bed) and found that to be very comfortable. But I am quite short so I don't know if someone taller than me would be as comfy.

I prefer the couch because I think the couch cushions give extra padding. I have never slept on a pullout and not been uncomfortable due to the bars. Even when we were at my SIL's house a few weekends ago, DH and I just took our own couch rather than pulling out the bed because it was just more comfortable for both of us.

My son slept on the pull-out in Animal Kingdom Villas and it was comfortable. However, I would never share a room with either my parents or in-laws with my spouse. And certainly not all together. That would be very awkward. I would get something with three separate sleeping areas.

What about taking the mattress and putting it directly on the floor?
