Grandpa Mohawk & BroganMc's NYE Live Trip Report

I LOVE your TRs!!!!!!!!! I am so glad you and your family are enjoying your time together at DW!!! Your family is very lucky to have you invite them. Your TR is getting me really excited for our trip in May, 2011 for 8 days at BLTs. It will be our first time as DVC members to stay anywhere besides SSR (our home resort).

Cool! We stay in BLT in early May, just for 3 days. My brother wants a turn being kidnapped and loves Contemp so we're taking him then. The whole family is joining us in Oct for a weekend (kids don't know yet) and my cuz is plotting to take his parents down for the Christmas season. Once you start taking family you become point poor fast. ;)

Make sure you make time for the Top of the World Lounge, midday to see the panorama and night for fireworks. And say hi to Scott from the Grandpa Mohawk posse. He's the pool coordinator who piloted the pool lift program here. We lost him to BLT when it opened.

....(snip)...... Once you start taking family you become point poor fast. ;).........
How true! But the best part of DVC is taking along family and friends to enjoy it with you.

Glad you are having such a good time - thanks for sharing and have a safe trip to your other home.

Saturday Evening Report

Where did I leave off? Ah yes... Enjoyed the luxury being able to take a shower while cuz was outside taking his jacuzzi bath. The joys of having a 1bedroom. Meanwhile GM called home and talked to my brothers. It was too busy the night before to do more than text Happy New Year wishes.

After that, we dressed for the pool and I headed down to the Springs to check on the pool lift. Stopped by Community Hall to see my friend Sundee. Caught he'll because I forgot to email her about Dad's hip surgery and the reason for the canceled Oct plans. Hugs later she forgave me and gave me a new set of CDs of her songs as a belated Christms gift.

Kelly dispatched herself to setup the lift at the Congress Pool jacuzzi for me. She has two new coordinators working for her now: Juan and Thiago? I'm wondering what happened to Louel and Andrew. Must ask Sundee.

It was breezy yesterday but the sun warm. You did wonder if you'd freeze getting wet. But the jacuzzi was a balmy 104 degrees. Met a family from Michigan and got to talking. Turns out they are Polish too so we talked pirogues and keilbasa and all our favorite Christmas traditions. Reminded me we have another family gathering planned at our house next Saturday. I need to do some shopping and vacuuming for Round 2 of Christmas.

Disney will aso start taking down the Christmas decorations by the time we leave Tuesday. I always find that depressing. Nice to know we have a clean and decorated house to go home to.

By 4:30pm we realized we were running let for dinner at Raglan Road. Dsis send me a text they were headed to DisneyQuest. She beat us to the pub by 15 minutes.

It was super crowded in Downtown Disney. More than usual. Everybody and their brother doing new year's shopping.

Had a great dinner at Raglan. We were seated right away in the center of the restaurant. 2 hours too early for the band and dancer, but the food was good. I opted out of my usual Very Berry Tini. I think I indulged enough the night before for NYE. Need to give the liver a rest.

Dnep11 insisted on ordering off the kids menu. He was tired of eating like an adult all trip. Went for his regular chicken and chips but both boys found their brave side and tried different adult foods as well. The Irish soda break with honey, then Dalkey Duo (battered sausages, my usual favorite but it tasted like they changed the batter and added chives to it), some smoked halibut and bread, and some beef ribs. Dnep11 really liked my Shepherd's Pie.

After dinner we split up to do a little shopping before meeting for movies. I had taken some medicine just before dinner and was suddenly hit with a wave of drowsiness. Between that and the crowd I didn't trust myself to drive my chair back to Guest Relations. We wanted to get updated Times Guides for the rest of the week. So I pulled over into a corner and sent GM ahead. Meanwhile Dsis, cuz and the boys hit LegoLand. My medicine really knocked me for a loop leaving me to doze on and off in that corner. Fortunately the crowd didn't notice and I wasn't bothered by them.

After that we met up on the way to AMC in West Side. The boys wanted to see Tron. GM opted out because he didn't care for the monochromatic filmography. Dsis opted to go shopping instead. So it was BIL, the boys, Cuz and I catching the 8:25pm show.

Saw some good promos and the boys were content with their popcorn and candy, but as for me the darkness just encouraged a nice long snooze. The movie was not really that great. Good special effects but nonsensical story. Funniest part of the whole night was after the movie when the 5 of us were walking back to SSR. We all agreed (in unison) that had Grandpa seen it, his reaction would be "WHAT?!"

Got home about 11pm (the earliest all week) and found GM asleep in bed. I think I made it to bed by 1am this time.

I'll finish this later. Just got back from mini golf and boys want to play Fruit Ninja with iPad.

Sunday Report

Woke up around 8am. There was talk yesterday of trying to go play mini-golf with the boys so we got on the phone to see if Dsis was interested. Her magical Express pickup was scheduled for 2:30pm so we had just enough time if we left by 10am. She said she'd get back to us.

Phone rings again and it is the Front Desk. They switched our reservation over to the extension dates and printed new keys for us. They were sending a runner down with them. Not bad since we expected to have to go up and get them.

Bad thing is GM left the phone off the hook so we didn't hear Dsis calling us back. She finally got through on my cell phone 45 min later and asked us to go play mini golf. Damn! That meant I was laying in bed playing with my iPad for an hour when I could have been taking a shower.

I wasn't that dirty so put on my shoes, washed my face and off we went to WinterSummerland near Blizzard Beach.

BIL stayed behind with Cuz in our room with their luggage. Had a bit of a wait for a bus but we got there by 11:15am. Played 18 holes of Winterland golf. Dnep11 beat GM by 2 points and rubbed it all in. His prize was a frozen Mickey bar back at SSR.

By the time we got home it was time for lunch of leftovers from the last two days. Then we walked them to the bus stop and bid them goodbye.

Spent the rest of the day hanging at SSR talking to our friends. Saw Jill the greeter in her new turn-of-the-century costume. Chatted up Jim & Bonnie in Artist's Palette. Met their new manager Jill.

Then down to Community Hall where GM and I helped her cut out supplies for souvenir plates and showed off pics of our train garden on my iPad.

We were getting game updates from my brother all afternoon so new the Ravens and Steelers won. Looks like Ravens may be headed to KC next weekend.

We had plans of going to see Osborne Lights again tonight, but I still haven't had my shower and to tell you the truth we're all slightly exhausted. Tomorrow is last night for Osborne so I hope we get there. We'll be meeting with friends for tea at Grand Floridian tomorrow afternoon. And it's also the last day for me to use the pool lift at the hot tub. (Coordinate Kelly has been real good about putting the lift out there for me to use every morning.)

And besides it has been spotty showers all day. Another started just a few minutes ago. Might be best just to stay in, watch football and eat leftovers.

I am so glad we extended the trip by two days. Makes a more relaxing time for us. And according to the text I just got from Dsis, it was a wise idea. Her 5pm flight was delayed till 7pm. I guess all the holiday traffic has been clogging the system.

I might try and get over to DTD later. There's a 2011 sparkly ornament I wanted to buy at Artist Palette. Saw several of them on the shelf for the last three days. Today I go to buy it and they are sold out. Even had CM Jennifer look in the back for me.

It would have made a nice remembrance of the trip. Should have gotten it yesterday when we were stuck in line. Oh well.

Night everyone! Hope you're enjoying the report. When I get home, I'll fill it out with pictures.

Sounds like you know how to make lemonade from lemons. You've taken the room and other challenges and still made it a great time for your family! Enjoy your quiet days....
:flower3:

Took a long hot shower and we hung out watching football in the room. I see Colts are in it this year again. Steelers won the division. My Ravens play Kansas City next Sunday.

Only a little bad news to report tonight. I laid down after a light dinner feeling exhausted. Wake up now and I feel sick. Hopefully it is just a bit of acid reflux, but right now you do not want to have my stomach.

Never made it back out for a walk around DTD. The lights look so pretty from our windows. We are in the dead center of the first building closest to Springs. Our overlook is West Side. Last room we stayed in here was a studio by the pool and that was on the side of the building with a garden/bus stop view.

That's another reason to like the 1bedroom HA rooms. They tend to be in the center of the building and have the best views. Studios and dedicated 2bedrooms are off to the side and have views of little gardens and parking lots.

SSR is still a gorgeous resort and my favorite of my all. I think there's only 4 buildings I don't care to stay in.

Woke up early with the beginnings of a head cold. I'm waiting for Artist's Palette to open so I can get some medicine.

In the meantime I decided to upload some photos to my Photobucket account. Here are some of my favorites so far:

Your family looks like they really enjoy themselves! Love the cute picture of you "pulling" the sleigh!

Brogan Mc, i've enjoyed living vicariously through your trip report! You really roll with the punches well, I love your attitude!! Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip---it's freezing back here in Va.

Just what I didn't want to hear Kristin. I see they're talking snow on Friday now.

My cold got worse yesterday. Managed to make it through the tea with our DVC friends, but I didn't enjoy it as a usually do. My nose just kept running and sinuses hurt bad. So I ended up just coming back to the room and crashing.

Didn't get back to a park again. No EMH at the Studios or seeing the last night of Osborne. Did send a family at the bus stop over. They just started their trip and didn't know about it.

Now it's out of this beautiful room and home. Our flight isn't until tonight so we'll hang out at SSR and DTD for the day.

Take care everyone! I'll post more when I get settled.

Safe travels on your way home...and thank you for letting us share your trip via your TRs! Hope your cold is a short one, and gets much better very quickly!

Happy new year to you & your family!

Ok folks, we're home. At last.

I just took some meds that are making me drowsy so this one will have to be a really quick report.

Vacated the room a few minutes past 11am. Bill from Bell Services came down to take our luggage up to Airline Checkin. We always bring a lightweight dorm comforter when traveling to Disney and at the last minute I decided NOT to pack it in my suitcase but rather buy a bag in AP for it.

Airline Checkin for Southwest worked very smoothly. They asked for our ME envelopes, a photo ID and then printed our boarding passes and tagged our bags for us. We each brought one big suitcase. We were told to just gate check our vehicles at the airport. The whole process would save a lot of time for us later. (And yes we did get our bags back on the other end just fine.)

Then we stopped into the Front Desk to straighten out the bill. They charged us for internet again. I think it had to do with how Anthony straightened out our room problem. Looks like our room came from CRO inventory. I should note here that in addition to the room upgrade, points return and $100 credit, Anthony gave us daily maid service as well. He really stepped up SSR's game and turned what could have been a disastrous trip into one of the best we ever had. I plan to write a nice long letter to Guest Satisfaction tomorrow detailing all the wonderful things he did for us. Fellow is in the leadership track for management so it'll be good to help him along with a good recommendation. (I learned he also helped our DVC friends out when there was a mixup with their room in October.)

This time it was Samantha (Sam) who helped us get back our internet credit. Sam had also been working with Anthony during our earlier room snafus. I cannot compliment the SSR front desk staff enough. YMMV but for us they have always been spectacular.

From there we took the ferry over to DTD and had lunch at wolfgang Puck Express. It was a warm day, warmer than yesterday, so we sat outside. Cuz had the butternut squash soup, GM had the chicken salad sandwich and I had a heaping plate of pennette chicken alfredo with peas and bacon sprinkles. So so soooo yummy. Wish my stomach was big enough to finish it all. I have pictures of our food that I'll post later. For now I'm just thinking of how I can make my own version at home.

Prices for the Express are far more affordable than the full blown restaurant. And it is on the quickservice dining plan.

Then we did a small bit of shopping mostly for Christmas ornaments. I fell in love with a little Luxor Jr. Pixar ornament the other day when I was buying our new Victorian Tree Skirt. And GM fancied a Mickey head made of multi-color jingle bells. My cuz gifted us a Mickey / Castle ornament that plugs onto your tree in front of a light. The light shines through the ornament creating a fireworks effect.

Cuz also wanted to get a couple gifts for the family at home. Some Disney glass ornaments for his parents and a Victorian-style hidden Mickey ornament for the new girlfriend. And based on my advice he also got this really cute plaid cap for her 7 yr old daughter. Hope it goes over well for him. My best advice was that if the cap had been my size it would have been on my head today.

Oh I did pick up a new case for my iPad. It's a black faux leather book-style case with a Mickey embossing on the front. I'd been looking for a good case that had the ability to prop up at different angles for viewing. It was on a little kiosk full of techie paraphenalia by Fulton's.

Then we walked back to SSR taking pictures along the way. That pathway along the lake by Congress Park is beautiful and peaceful.

Stopped by Community Hall to hang with Sundee but Eddie (her coworker) told us she called in sick today. I feel so bad for her if she caught what I did. I'll e-mail her later but asked Eddie to give her a hug when she gets back to work.

Then it was back up to the Carriage House for a drink refill, bathroom break and to say goodbye to all our friends. We couldn't find Jill but Elizabeth found us. I really like Elizabeth. She's such a sweet young lady. Oh I should warn you. If you happen to be the family with kids who eats at the Turf Club, I put Elizabeth up to a practical joke. I told her to get real serious as she tells the parents of a new policy: children must wash dishes before they can have dessert. I think it'll work best with kids ages 9-13 and of course a fun sort of family who didn't mind some teasing. I'd love to see the look on the kids' faces.

Tonight was Jill & Elizabeth's family movie night. They went to see Tangled at Pleasure Island based on my recommendation. I'm waiting to hear the review. I think Elizabeth would make a fabulous Sleeping Beauty or Rapunzel one day. She has that sort of face.

Jill had gone off to take a family back to Old Key West and our bus was due to arrive just as she was due to clock out. By the time we got our carryon bags from Bell Services there was Jill rushing over to send us off. (Seems Elizabeth flagged her down as soon as she returned.) We talked a bit trading family stories. They are truly nice people and I hope we get a chance to know them better. We're trying to make plans for May and October (when Elizabeth turns 21).

Our 4:30pm bus arrived exactly on time and was our driver from last year. It had a lift, our bags were long gone to the airport and we had plenty of time to make our flight. All was running smoothly. Too smoothly. I should have sensed trouble then.:Pokepoke:

Just as I was boarding the bus, GM realizes he doesn't have the car keys for home. He left them in the room... 5 hours ago! And we went to all the trouble of parking at the BWI airport so no one had to come out at night to retrieve us. I also purposefully left my spare keys at home so I wouldn't lose mine and GM could keep track of us. :headbange

Lift busses are hard to come by and this one was filling up fast, so we made a quick decision. I'd go on the 4:30pm bus, and GM and Cuz would stay behind and try to find the keys with the help of the SSR Front Desk.

This time it was Tamara who came to the rescue. I was receiving frequent text updates from my cuz all the way to the airport. Tamara got a golf cart and took GM and Cuz down to the room to search for the keys. It wasn't occupied yet but no keys were found. Check with Housekeeping and still no keys. So I texted my Dsis for help while GM & Cuz filed a missing keys report. They were going to catch the next bus and meet me at Security. Then just as they were walking out the door Tamara came chasing after them. Seems Maintenance found our keys and were bringing them around.

GM and Cuz caught a full 5:30pm bus and I'm sure the SSR Front Desk breathed a sigh of relief. Oh what trouble we were this trip. They probably have our pictures up on a dartboard in the backroom by now.:o

The airport was busy. Our flight delayed a couple minutes, but all went smoothly. GM sat next to a lady from Annapolis with a small service dog (a black Scottie named Piper) and made friends the entire trip. Piper liked Dad so much she crawled into his lap before the plane ever taxied.

So we're home now. The new Disney tree skirt is under the tree. The kitties are happy to see us. Our Christmas lights still work and it is freezing cold again. A high of 25 degrees.:brrrrrr:

Glad you made it home safe. I adore SSR, too, and was happy to hear they came through with flying colors. :goodvibes

Gotta a call from Travis at DVC Member Satisfaction today. It was a follow-up to the e-mail I sent regarding all the wonderful service we got from Saratoga Springs this last trip.

We had a very long conversation (over an hour) about it all. Talked a lot about this new Lilo system and the Special Needs database of rooms. Seems Anthony made a notation as well that the database needed to be reviewed.

And of course I got to wax poetic about all our most helpful Cast Members at our home away from home.

One thing to note, Travis tells me this new Lilo system has a new feature that will help you guests wanting or NOT wanting accessible rooms. Seems the old system did not describe which rooms were HA when they did the resort guest assignment at 10 days out. So guests got assigned an HA room at the luck of the draw. There was no way for the room assigner to verify whether a room was HA and fulfill the request "non HA room".

Lilo does list this. (Or will when they correct the database.)

I also learned Wishes is the name of the system Member Services uses and Dream is the system that interfaces with Lilo (Lilo is the CRO system). Prior to the computer upgrades they used a compilation of bridge interfaces that resulted in CRO not seeing MS reservation numbers all the time. That was a huge problem for Special Needs. You couldn't call Special Needs directly to verify your needs.

I did request a couple things Travis was writing up in his report:

Members requiring HA rooms be part of the conversation between MS and Special Needs instead of being put on hold.

Members who have accessible rooms blocked get reservation confirmations with the type of accessibility noted: roll-in shower vs. tub with rails. (This is something they could add to the new system with a code.) The new system has returned the notation of "accessible room guaranteed". That was missing the last couple years.

In general we just talked about our experiences, how the staff stepped up (I raved about several CMs at SSR), and things that could be done to make the process for disabled guests better.

Oh I also suggested someone write up a Disability Guide for each resort detailing what, if any, special features they have like that awesome pool lift at SSR. I know all the resorts are planned to get one but they are kept in storage when a guest doesn't need it so not all disabled guests know about it.

I hope the folks who helped us this trip get proper notations in their employee records. As I told Travis, these are the good ones with Disney spirit.

And yes, my dream job would be moving down to Orlando and being a Cast Member. Alas my family is too big and too settled here, and my dad's business has too many employees depending on him. So I can be content as an "honorary cast member".

That is great that you received a response from MS. I hope you are feeling better. Stay warm!
