No bashing of teachers here! :)

DD and her DH were quite impressed when they met her Wednesday at "Back To School Night".. Sounds like the curriculum is much tougher now that my DGD has reached 3rd grade and while her teacher is a peach, she's also very no-nonsense in her approach to her students.. One of her biggest requests is that the parents back off and allow the children to start taking responsibility for their own actions: homework being completed in a timely, legible fashion; remembering which day it is that they need to dress appropriately for gym class; what snacks are and are not allowed; bringing the proper supplies needed for each of their assorted classes; etc..

Not sure how thrilled my DGD is going to be (although she seems fine so far) but considering all there is that she needs to learn this year, I think this is a good approach.. ;)

My DD is in 2nd grade and her teacher is also trying to get the kids to be more responsible for things. One thing she suggested that she actually does in the classroom is to make lists.

It's something the child can be involved with. For example Mon: gym - wear sneakers; library - bring back book; math - work sheet due; etc. Each night the list for the following day can be pulled out and followed.

I'm thinking of doing something like this with my DD. I'm getting a little tired of constantly reminding her of things.

The teacher also strongly suggested that her students should be responsible for making their own beds; putting their dirty clothes in the hamper; fedding the family pets; etc., because she often finds that parents haven't requested their children do specific chores on a daily basis yet..

I like the sound of this teacher.

Personal responsibilty is not something there is a lot of these days.

Agreed! :thumbsup2

It really sounds like she's going to have quite a work load this year and if she doesn't take responsibility for it herself, it could develop into a "sink or swim" situation..
