GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

According to our local health services (50 miles north of DisneyWorld) the testing results are backed up to 8 to 10 days. They are suggesting if you think you may have been exposed go ahead and self quarantine, you don’t need to stand in the sun for 4 hours in line waiting for a test and you will know in pretty much the same time whether you have it or not.
Oh dear.

For sure self diagnose, self quarantine and self treat is easier and cheaper on the system.
Somehow I think they should add "Good luck to you!" :sunny:

(I guess contact tracing at this point is old school.)

Just like it has in Sweden.

We're not Sweden in many, many ways. What "worked" there, will not work the same here.

"Sweden is more sparsely populated than the United States — even more so if you look at New York City, which was especially hard-hit by the new coronavirus.

Over half of Swedes live in single-person households, which makes it easier to do physical distancing.

Compare this with the United States, where just 28% of adults live alone. And many Americans live in multi generational homes where the new coronavirus can easily spread from young people to older adults.

The United States also has higher rates of chronic diseases that increase the risk of severe COVID-19.

In Sweden, 13% of adults have obesity and 6.9% have diabetes, while 40% of American adults have obesity and 9.1% have diabetes.

And Sweden has very different healthcare than in the United States.

When people are calling for the United States to “be more like Sweden” in its COVID-19 response, they may be ignoring the major differences in healthcare access and cost.

For one thing, Swedes have government-funded universal healthcare.

Contrast this with the 29% of American adults who are underinsured and 13% who are uninsured. Many of these people have untreated chronic health conditions that put them at greater risk from COVID-19.

The Swedish government even provides paid sick leave which encourages people to stay home when they’re sick — a key step in slowing the spread of the new coronavirus. Parents are also paid to stay home to care for a sick child.

In the United States, there’s no national paid sick leave requirement. And only 12 states and Washington, D.C. , require companies and businesses to offer paid sick leave."

Interesting to note that in our cases, over 10% of them are children under 17. Over 35% include 18-20 yrs olds. My kid teaches the 17-19 age group. Someone tell me again it's safe to go back to school. Just because kids are a smaller group, doesn't make them insignificant in the risk.

This isn't recent cases, this is overall percentages since the beginning. 65 and over only count for 15% of total cases. The most at risk group here is 18-35.

But if you haven't had a positive test, how does that affect your employment rights (not that you have many in America anyway)???

Sweden is not any example to be quoting. And we've been over it before. And the numbers are far worse now than they were then.
Sweden has 5, 619 deaths.
Norway 255
Finland. 328
Denmark 611.
The first time, they had about 5 times the deaths of Denmark. The second time, the numbers were worse. And worse again the third time. Now, they have about 5 times the deaths of all three combined.

If things were going to work anywhere like that it was Sweden. There is a natural tendency to socially distance there unlike almost anywhere else. In a business meeting, they are likely to just wave from across the table rather than shake hands. Forget the two sides kissy kissy thing they do in southern Europe. Forget hugging. Don't even try either. That just isn't going to be happening. They were already well versed in working from home. And they have universal health coverage that we don't. And if you sit down near one at the transit stop, they're likely to just get up and find an open space. If it was going to work anywhere it was there. But it didn't. And the ease with which dissers discount lives as being of so little worth that they can be blown off to boost their arguments is astounding.

Depends on the employer, but Disney isn't paying for sick leave for anyone who hasn't had a positive test.

I live in a retirement community, so most don’t worry about needing sick leave. But given the lag is area wide, I’m not sure how many CMs have been exposed but are working for a week to 10 days until they get their results. Otherwise it is quite a gamble if they need that paycheck.

The lag also affects those who were thinking they would get tested just before they hopped on a plane home, so they wouldn’t have to quarantine when they got there.

and of course you have to ask what is the point in getting tested at all if you have to wait 10 days. If you have mild symptoms then they will likely be gone within 10 days anyway. If you have severe symptoms then you will have likely needed hospital care within 10 days!

That was exactly the head of the medical center’s point. No need to get tested. That does mean for all the positives we will see in 8 to 10 days, there are many more positives that didn’t get tested, because they were told not to.

New York's big mistake was telling people not to get tested. Go get tested if you have any symptoms. If you need to be hospitalized three weeks from now, having had access now to the drugs being used might save your life.

...
I don't believe that across most of Europe Sweden is seen as a model of what to do, either. (I may also be the only person here who was actually in Sweden during the pandemic....) The Swedish model was really not planned, it was 'make it up as we go along', and unlike the UK, they did not revert to the stricter plan in place in most of Europe.

However, they also did not remain wide open (not saying that you said that). They did close a lot of things, and as noted, there is a natural social distancing there, especially without tourists.

As borders opened in Europe, many countries refuse(d) to give access to Swedish residents, which has caused a lot of issues. Unfortunately they are seen as 'tainted' and their access is still much more limited right now.

For an individual it doesn’t matter, but the lack of testing has so many public health affects. Without accurate positive tests we don’t know if community spread is increasing, decreasing, what age groups it’s hitting, and an accurate study of severity since only the very very sick get tested. With business and school opening decisions that data is critical.
They just sounds like they are throwing in the towel and saying we no longer can benefit from study, accurate info, or planning. It’s like disease control anarchy (which yeah we’re probably hitting that point in some states...if only we had 4 months warning....)

So as long as they can find way to pass the temp check they're actually encouraged to continue going to work and infecting guests then. Nice.

Seriously. I'm not sure how long it takes to receive test results in FL, but I have heard folks waiting for over a week. And only about a third of the positive cases present with a fever. Good times.

And we will not know how many people have actually been infected.

My great nephew was tested yesterday at 3:15. They got the negative result this morning. I know there are many different situations but it sounds like Florida needs to improve their testing system, which I doubt will happen under the present administration.

That was the best benefit from this all :P I work for a Dutch/French company, and the constant kissing my French colleagues whenever we went to Paris or they came to NL... In NL we never kiss our colleagues (yes, maybe on a birthday or the first day after New Year), the French do it constantly, each day. And the constant struggle as the French do 2 kisses and in NL it's 3! They try to be polite and follow our rules and go for 3 kisses, and we try to do the same and want to go for 2 kisses... Always awkward.

The same for working from home, it's very custom in NL to work from home whenever needed (when a mechanic comes over or a doctor's visit, etc.). No one at our office cares, as long as you didn't work from home each day. For my colleagues in France, that was just not done. And we had huge discussions, as we had a French manager overseeing a FR/NL combined team. As the French were not really allowed to work from home, they didn't want the Dutch to work from home either... While we were not at the same office to begin with and had already a lot of meetings via phone or video calling.
Also that is one of the benefits from Covid. Now that we all had to work from home the French manager has seen that we are still productive and the world didn't come to an end.

About the open spaces on public transportation, depends a bit on where you are in Europe. Also here a big difference between North and South Europe. But yes... I do change seats if possible :) And I believe in Finland they already dislike it if there is another person in the same wagon. I am trying to find a comic I once read with all these kinds of differences, but no success yet.

But back to our topic of the day, I think not till 5-10 years from now we will be able to tell which country did a good job. We do not know the longterm consequences. We already hear so many stories of people getting mild symptoms, no hospitalization, but do need months to get back to their normal level of energy. Who knows what will be happening in the long run.

All of this makes me wonder how accurate the case count is. If people decide not to get tested because of the long lab time then of course they won't be counted. But they can certainly spread the virus around.
