GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

We can cast stones at any institution and/or individual and most have stumbled in one way or another during this pandemic. We must recognize that we're all human and make mistakes. It's the willingness to acknowledge overisghts/errors, to learn, and to move forward that differentiates us from the rest of the creatures living or extinct.

You want to keep this number at 5% or less to make sure you’re picking up most of the new cases. The fact that it’s so high tells me that FL testing isn’t picking up most of the new cases. I see the same here in AZ.

The problem with missing people is that they then go and continue spreading it. This is problematic.
So what do you suggest since a percentage of people are asymptomatic? The problem with this virus is there is no good way to find out what percentage of the population truly has it. Unless you test everyone.

Test at least enough to bring the positivity rate down to 5%. Enforce social distancing and masks with fines at least a thousand dollars.

I still don't understand that statement. You can only test people who want to be tested. Right? I'm not trying to argue, I'm just trying to understand. It truly doesn't make sense to me. For example: I am never going to subject myself to a PCR test unless I am symptomatic or I have been notified of an exposure.

I agree on the fines for no masks.

I had a PCR test. It’s not bad.

If you have a high positivity rate, you most likely have symptomatic people that haven’t been tested. This might have to do with it being challenging to get a test.

We’re trying to catch up to FL. :)
I think Arizona has a few extenuating circumstances increasing numbers. I feel most horribly for the situation with the Navajo Nation. They already have enormous challenges besides the virus.

Our zoo is opening!! More restaurants, bars , no gyms Or malls yet.
Bars and indoor dining seemed to be our downfall. I will be interested in seeing how it goes for you - and crossing my fingers it goes better!!!

Awaiting Newsom’s press conference where he will be rolling back more openings. I have no idea if it’ll be statewide or county by county and whether it’s just for the holiday weekend or longer term.

our opening has been slow but that is the key I think.

Indoor dining and bars are not the major driver of growing cases in the SF Bay Area. As far as I’m aware, only San Mateo Co. has limited indoor dining open. The entire rest of Bay Area are outdoor dining only—if even that. Majority of places are still curbside/to-go only as there is no feasible outdoor dining space.

What does increased testing to bring down the positivity rate accomplish besides playing with the numbers to make a situation appear better? The numerator in the population still stays the same.

It's not the outdoor dining so much as the staying in close proximity to strangers for any amount of time where both parties are unmasked. This increases the contact time and likelihood of transmission of virus from one host to another.

Stay 6' apart, if you cannot maintain this -- mask. A single simple if/than guidance. Five year olds can achieve this.

If you can get contact tracing set up, you can inform more people that they might be infected.

Arizona is in the barrel now. And it truly sucks. Not sure how any of these southern and western states think they're going to get schools open with the half, or less than half measures they've put in place (looking at you Florida!).

If ya'll just stayed closed for another month and modeled that wearing masks isn't tied directly to your masculinity.....we probably wouldn't be in this position right now.

An aside. My cousin, who is home with his wife after their unnecessary trip to Florida (from NJ), recovering from COVID-19......well, he posted on Facebook that he and his wife got the virus on a trip to Florida. He took the post down after 24 hours because he got slammed so hard by his FB friends. Pandemic shaming. I'd like to note that I didn't say anything, although I'm peeved at him. He's more like my nephew, and he's a good kid, who did a foolish thing.

There is no evidence to suggest staying closed longer will prevent virus spikes. Based on what I see, infection rates will increase when states re-open, regardless of the time frame.

Epidemiologists and Infectious Disease Doctors based their recommendations on previous viruses. But previous viruses weren't as infectious, and virus transmission occurred when people were symptomatic.

People seem to forget that any one of us could be an asymptomatic super-spreader. So the temperature checks and the survey questions are pretty useless.

Closing down is what you're forced to do when people won't comply with very simple, non invasive health guidelines. You have to get numbers down to a reasonable level, then re-open slowly following the federal guidelines for doing that. At that point, people have to comply with safety recommendations or it doesn't work. None of the states that opened early followed the guidelines and on top of that, people didn't comply with orders to wear masks and social distance. All the time being shut down accomplished nothing and those states that are spiking now can only blame themselves. Apparently a handful, like Florida, have decided to heck with it. If you die, you die, but we're going to open. It doesn't have to be that way, but that's the choice they're making.
