GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

I think the heat in the south drives people indoors to restaurants, bars, etc. Once inside those establishments, any person wearing a mask can take it off to eat/drink, opening themselves up for contracting the virus. Alcohol is a contributing factor as well, especially with younger people. It lowers inhibitions and increasing risky behavior. And so people get closer to each other, they get louder when they speak and that's also going to drive up the number of infected.

There's a real irony to this whole thing when it comes to Disney. They're requiring people to wear masks when outside in very high heat/humidity when, if properly physically distancing, that's where they will be the safest. However, when inside a contained space and seated at a table, they can take off their masks. I get it....you can't eat with a mask on. But you're far safer outside with no mask than you will be inside at any restaurant without one.

FL has added more new cases in about one week than my state has had the last four months.

Wisconsin has almost 27,000 confirmed cases since this started. Florida has added that many in about 7 days or less.
So scary. :sad2: I just can't comprehend how people see those numbers and think “I’m going to a bar tonight” or something similar. My younger sister lives in Florida and at least she (and most people she knows she says) are being careful. And she’s still working from home so I hope she stays safe during this.

Those earlier videos at the council meeting are eye-opening. Where do people come up with this stuff?

It's good to see Florida taking this seriously. I hope they do more. I also wonder about the themeparks.

My sarcasm meter is broken. Sadly I live in FL and there is quite a bit of that sentiment (like the hollering at the County meeting, the guy shoving his way into Wal Mart) and it has made me reach beyond my breaking point.

Yup....I am getting tired of people in general lol....so many Floriduh idiots starting with leadership on down. No one respects medicine or science - nor the people who have dedicated years of training and their lives to protecting health. They insult, hurl stupid slogans....I want to escape somewhere with my cats and avoid the human race lol.

Tried going to a restaurant for the first time this past week, mask in hand, to sit outside and get some fresh air and a drink, since I can't do that at home. Saw so many violations.:scared:

I emailed the restaurant manager a super polite, totally non-confrontational request that I loved his establishment, but "we please need you to follow covid safety rules" and outlined all the things I saw that put his staff and patrons in danger. Never even received the courtesy of a reply. I could easily have shamed her/him on social media and make a huge stink. Someone's going to report him and he'll probably be screaming the loudest when they fine him or shut him down.

I haven't been to a restaurant yet (not even outdoors), or even take-out. But I've seen lax behavior with respect to the ones that are open for outdoor dining. I live in a town in NJ with an actual downtown. And they've closed the streets Thursday-Sunday to allow restaurants to set up. This is week #2, and it's become a *scene*. There were just too many people walking down the center aisle. Some of the tables are too close. I saw servers with masks below their noses...etc. I say, vote with your wallet. If a restaurant or store/service is not following the rules, don't spend your money there. I have been going to my local butcher throughout the pandemic, right from the start. However, the last two times I was there the owner had his mask under his chin. It's his business, and I don't think it's my place to tell him what to do. He knows what to do, and he's decided not to do it anymore. Also, that kind of thing tells me what they're all doing when customers aren't in the store....likely not wearing masks. So, I ventured over to Trader Joes. There was no line and I was able to shop comfortably there. Haven't been in there since early March. Everyone had masks on, and it was all spaced out nicely.

After I just read about the 85 people sick in Lansing , MI from being in a restaurant/pub, I have no desire to go to one. But I am a little tired of cooking dinner.😄

I've only eaten out once since all of this started and luckily our restaurant seemed quite strict. Social distancing, masks, paper menus and so on were being used and it was nice.

We have resumed dining at a couple of our favorite restaurants. Perfectly comfortable with their precautionary measures.

I continue seeing numbers by state instead of city or more importantly by zip code. This would give a much clearer picture. Also missing is the positivity rate. Sheer numbers can be shocking but not show the true problem areas.

I tell you, this whole thing has made me seriously rethink my retirement plans relocation in a few years. Currently I live in an area that seems to be 100% mask compliant, we follow the rules, etc. The idiots seem to only be vocal on social media but you never see them out and about without a mask because the majority of mask wearers probably intimidates them. When mask compliance slips, they'll get more publicly vocal. But, in seeing all of this, I just don't think I could move somewhere and live among a population that was that ignorant, rude, and well, dumb. It would drive me crazy. It's expensive here, but I might have to stay.

Orange County Percent Positive Yesterday 17.6 Today 17.0
Osceola Yesterday 22.8(an outlier for sure) Today 13.1

DeSantis has been quiet today, Pence canceled his Faith in America tour dates. Not looking good in Florida....

DH and I ate out for the second time in four months today. We won't be returning to our favorite place for a very long time and the owner will be informed publicly why. DH and I were the only people wearing masks. No masked staff, no gloves being worn by anyone, I saw nothing being cleaned, no masked customers and groups of friends were sitting right next to each other at tables. Staff was hugging customers and to be honest, I was horrified.

As much as I miss eating out, that experiment is over for now.

I would have turned around and walked out.

That's how outbreaks happen. The place in Michigan is a good example. As for us, no dining out. I can see where this is headed and it's going to be a long haul. I guess I always knew that, but seeing the outbreak in the South and also in other countries where they're having flare-ups here and there.....it's just going to be awhile. We all made such sacrifices to give the healthcare workers a chance to get through the first surge in the northeast. But the southern states opened too fast, and they were cheered on by the administration. And that makes no sense, because the top dog is going against the guidance of the government that he....governs? I am just so incredibly tired of living in the twilight zone.

I spent a lot of time this spring making my yard/deck as nice as it's ever been. Great garden, flowers, lights, even some cool metal travel signs that we hung on our fence to remind us of the places we've been....and the places we still want to visit. So we're enjoying spending time out there. A month ago I had about 8 groups of friends/family that we thought were being responsible and figured we could have them over for "socially distanced dinners" outside. But in the last two weeks three of our group are off the list because we just don't feel comfortable based on how they're behaving. And honestly....it's fine. Everyone is going to do what they're going to do. But it's only going to prolong the agony for those of us who prefer not to get this virus.

You couldn't pay me to go to FL now. I can't believe how many people actually state they can't see the direction indicators on the ground because they are pushing a cart. You know many places are starting directional aisles now so look and you can look ahead of your cart and see the indicator. If you can't follow such a simple direction you are just an idiot.

I've been saying all along we reopened far too quickly. Restaurants and bars should be carry out only for the rest of the summer if not year, gyms should stay closed just as long. Barbers/stylists, tattoo places, boutiques, anything actually non-essential should still be closed. I guess in very rural areas with almost no outbreak the rules can be less strict but in and near cities stay the <expletive deleted> home.

We do have some employees that are deemed essential but the majority of our work force hasn't even been in the office since March. I was in this evening (the only one there to do some quick work I had to be present for and our area is secure even from most staff let alone the public) and all the calendars were still on March. It was creepy.

If you haven't lost all faith in humanity, then by the end of this virus outbreak, you will.
