GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

A lot of people don’t care. That’s why covid is so very high in USA. You have one person in your house that doesn’t care you got the whole house getting covid. It’s a shame they are costing thousands of people their lives millions of people their jobs. They don’t care about themselves there is no way they care about other people. Lots of good people also gets covid that cares. If we just had them and their people in their house covid will be manageable. But no lots of people don’t care

I don't put more stock in masks than other precautions. They are a tool but not the magic bullet.
Yes, a tool. One of many that is needed to be deployed consistently in combination until we find a more effective tools. To NOT utilize this tool for general public usage makes no sense.

Having no speed limit in most cities makes no sense. No speed limit in open country Montana makes sense cause the risk of exposure and running into another speeding vehicle is much lower than I75 in Miami or I5 in LA.

However, it DOES make sense to have a 25mph speed limit in downtown Billings. Likewise, a mask in central Billings would probably be appropriate if one can't maintain physical 6' distance at all times.

Facial covering is a tool to help us get to go. Kind of silly keeping it in the drawer.

In countries where correct mask wearing is common, it does stop transmission of the virus.

And it continues to rise in Japan. I was there during the first spread of the virus in early 2020, and masks were not worn regularly as some like to tout even in the hot spot area at that time (I've been to Japan many times and the rate of mask wearing was not higher than usual then) South Korea is also currently seeing an increase in cases. So is Hong Kong.

Masks are ONE tool which can help to stop the spread, but should be used in combination with social distancing, restrictions, rapid testing, contact tracing, etc. There are many countries which saw relatively good success without having a mask rule implemented.

Yes I understand positivity rates. As I have said the number of positives has increased because more tests are being taken. Not all states remove duplicates. Not only that but if there are false positives they don't remove the original positive test. Not sure if that is on purpose. There doesn't seem to be a daily report on the amount of false positives. Not to mention if there are tests giving out false positives then the testing itself is still trusted? Just as people say others think this is a hoax and some disagree, think about the fact that people are believing what they are hearing about it. When the number of deaths caused by covid skyrocketed, the number of deaths caused by things like heart attacks, stroke, etc. decreased. We already know they were fudging the numbers by listing peoples cause of death as Covid 19 without even testing for it.

I challenge everyone to do their research. This is a highly politicized virus. Don't be a sheep and really do your OWN research. Wait until November. Like the groundhog on Groundhog day this will either disappear quickly or continue on depending on who wins the election.
Your last paragraph gave you away as to your "news" sources. :rotfl:

So most things are still closed?
Everything is open here unless you count private businesses that just decided not to open. We went to the theater last week (they did have social distancing), my kids are back in ballet and hockey. Mask wearing is not mandatory. We had a doctor making most of our decisions and creating guidelines on reopening though. They waited until we had no cases, any one could take a test, and full contact tracing. From what I have read, we were about a month later reopening than everyone else, but once we did we finished reopening faster.

I'm sure we will have outbreaks, we've had a few cases but they have all been travel related where people isolated on arrival.

I'm with you on masks. I don't think federal mandates go over well. I think private businesses should be able to make their own decisions. I think decisions about public buildings should be made by politicians because they were elected to make those types of decisions. If anyone doesn't like their decisions they have the option to vote them out then.
I swear to God people are rooting for states to fail. Seriously.
I can promise you most of us are rooting for the exact opposite of that. I just want to go back and everything to be back to "normal" :(

Being realistic about the situation is not rooting for states to fail. Regardless, this isn't a football game. Cheering for failure or success won't change a thing.

I don't know anyone who hopes states fail, but I know a lot that are insuring they will.

Yes, masks are one tool. But many people in our country are still not wearing them. Rapid testing is only available to private organizations, like, the NBA for example. Early on at least, they were tested daily, and could not even practice until the results were in. I read a piece in the Wall Street Journal about a large movie studio in Georgia that has anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000 people on-site on any given day. They plan on spending 1.5 million a year in testing to keep the studio open and the inhabitants healthy. They're initially tested with a nasal swab. If that is negative they get a badge that unlocks doors in the studio so that they may enter. They also get a colored wrist band so that everyone in the studio can feel comfortable by seeing that band, and thus knowing that it's safe. They are then given a saliva test weekly from there.

Out in the general public, things aren't going even remotely as smoothly as that set-up. It takes sometimes two weeks to get results, making the test essentially useless. In the northeast, where we have a small number of cases and lower transmission compared to the south, we're still looking at "part-time" in-person school at best. Parents are so stressed out, and my circle of friends are people of means for the most part. They will be working from home anyway, but the idea of another 1-2 semesters of with the kids mostly at home is putting serious strain on these families. Imagine how hard it will be for people who have to report to work. It's going to be incredibly difficult.

True...I get the impression that there are a few who would, in a sick way, be happy if NY's or NJ's numbers started rising again. Other than that, I don't know anyone from those states or anywhere else who wants to see anyone failing. There's a lot of frustration when people from struggling states downplay it, or advocate against taking the necessary steps to quell the surge, but rooting for them to fail? No, not happening.

It's not a one way street. I see too much my way or no way.

I think a lot of that comes from people who live in places where they got the virus under control. They look at Florida and don't understand what they are doing. I look at what worked where I live and how our cases have stayed low since opening everything. I struggle to understand why things are the way they are.

My state had everything "under control". They started opening up in early June. For all of June and most of July, cases stayed on a plateau. Percent positives were <3%. Over the last two weeks, cases have exploded. We've almost doubled our amount of cases (since March) in the last two weeks. I'm not sure if people let their guard down or what's going on. But, just because your (general) state has things under control now, doesn't mean that will last.

There are likely multiple reasons why this virus rolls from place to place and spikes. Some put the blame squarely on folks who have different thoughts or opinions. I don't think that's what causes it to spread.

That I agree with that but measures should still be put in place. In Florida they haven't really done much.

People are what causes it to spread. IMO to live with this virus means wearing a mask and keep physical distancing in place. As well as enforcing those rules. Its not that hard but for many its like building the pyramids.

There's only one reason really - travel. If a person doesn't move around neither does the virus. If everyone in the world could (ETA: HYPOTHETICALLY) stay at home for 2-3 weeks starting today, it would be over.

If a person has to move, a mask can help minimize the risk of movement though.

All that's closed is theme parks. Movie theaters and casinos have opted to stay closed as they can't function with the 50 person limit. What else is there to open?

What about bars, kids dance studios, gymnastics, other kids sports/activities, trampoline parks, other entertainment venues?

I wish we would do this, but people can't see the forest through the trees. Can you imagine the outcry if we attempted this? "how dare you take away my rights" "I can go where I want" "You can't make me!" "Im not a sheep!" It would be like asking a toddler to stand still for 5 minutes.

For the most part those are open now. Many aren't interested in going to them so some have stayed closed.
