OK, so it was April 2001 and was our family's second trip to Walt Disney World. Beautiful weather and the Grand Floridian looked perfect. Then we get the key to our room and the room is perfect. I was thinking there is nothing wrong with this hotel. So I open the door to the terrace and guess what?!.......

There is a giant tree in the way of my view of the lake and the monorail. A giant tree! It's like they were thinking: "Hmmm, we got this great view of the water. I know let's ruin it by putting a four story tree in front of the terrace. Sweet Irony!

I remember reading somewhere that those trees in front of Boca Chica and Big Pine Key are keeping the ground from eroding away. So unless Disney wants the GF under water they need those trees! ;)

That would be sort of disappointing though. :( Did you ever try to change rooms??

I know what you mean!!! We stayed at the Poly 2 years ago with 2 rooms. One room had a great view of the lagoon and the other room had a tree in front if it. We were glad we had at least one room with a great view especially when you are paying quite a bit extra for that lagoon view. The trees look great from the outside, but when they block your view it makes me not like them too much.

I understand what you're saying. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words...

Over the years, I've stayed in two different suites in Conch Key. One suite was on the second floor and the other one was immediately above it on the third floor. As I looked out my balcony window during my last suite stay, I soon understood why one of the suites was named "Cypress" (click here for view from Cypress Suite). I could see that tree from the parlor room and the master bedroom of the suite. The second bedroom, however, had a non-tree view, so at least my guests had a lovely view of Cinderella's Castle as they fell asleep each night, ~sigh.~

Here's a better view of that tree -- click here for exterior photo of Conch Key. I took that photo a few years ago, so I can only imagine how large that tree is now.

Before I close, I should note that both suites were gorgeous and my family and guests truly had *magical* vacations. I will cherish those memories always (and pray that if I stay in a GF suite again, I won't have a tree blocking its view ;) ).

I know exactly what you mean. Eight years ago, we planned our biggest and best DW vacation. Poly conc., lagoon view, etc. We had never stayed at a deluxe before, so this was a big deal for us. Anyway, when we checked in our room it was 2nd floor (no balcony) with a view of a HUGE palm tree. Tried to get us moved, but no luck. We ended up sitting on the floor at nite with our heads twisted around to view the castle/fireworks. What a bummer. The moral to the story is that now because of these boards, we know what to request, we know that a lagoon view doesn't necessarily mean castle view, we know that the 2nd floor of Hawaii doesn't have balconies, etc., etc. Tracey
