Review Grand Floridian Pools

I'm confused. All the chairs are "reserved" by breakfast. How are the guests from other resorts getting to the GF that early?
There's 2 different issues being discussed here. GF guests coming down to the pool as soon as it opens and "reserving" the loungers with a towel or other items then not coming back for hours. And the other issue is non GF guests using the pools throughout the day. Together they make it impossible, at times, to get a lounger.

You have 3 issues. The pool may not be big enough for the number of rooms.

A solution Disney might like. Premium, reserved lounge chairs. Mandalay Bay charged $150 for a lounge chair.

If they remedy 1 and 2, then 3 might not be an issue. Don't know for sure but probably.

Exactly, both of which mean no chairs for GF paying guests as myself wishing to sit poolside for at least a portion of my vacation.

Just got back from a 6 day stay 2 bedroom at the Grand. My first stay ever at that location. First of all, the rooms are beautiful. Secondly, the pool situation was a mess. 2 pools is not enough for a 7 building probably close to 1000 rooms/villas.

Spent two full pool days at the courtyard pool. Opened at 7am. Day 1 I arrived at 6:55 expecting a line. No line. People already in and 40% gone and by 8am it was at capacity.
Day 2. I got there at 6:50. Easter Sunday. 50% gone and by 7:30. At capacity. Now by at capacity, I mean every chair had a towel on it. I sat there with wife and other family friends, there were chairs that people didn’t come back to until 1pm. Also there aren’t enough chairs at that pool. And that slide pool. Whoever designed that. The area around the pool is 65% slide, waterfall, 4 cabanas, bathrooms and the bar right up by the pool. Again limited seating.

Add in cool water temps and it’s not a good pool experience. And I’ve talked to the Disney people in the past. The nights, the rain, we had a cool stretch. I’ve heard all the excuses…As a pool owner from Michigan, I know how to manage a pool temp, and it not any different from your house. I like a warmer pool. Say 87 to 88. To do that your heater will Run more often. And cost you more (which I think is the main issue) But you set it and it keeps that temp

Disney claims this 82 degree temp policy which is too cold for a resort of this caliber. You shouldn’t have people inching into the water like they are being tortured at the rates guests are paying. But they turn the pumps and heater off at night. Temp drops to probably high 70’s. Comes back on in morning but it takes to mid afternoon to get to a “reasonable”level and that shouldn’t be accepted there.

Again. Loved the rooms. But I will pass in the future
We came back from VGF yesterday and didn’t have a problem getting a space at the pool. Staff actively removed towels from seats where guests were absent.

Been going for years and this past (April) visit was the first time I drastically saw the 7am chair reservation activity at the Courtyard pool. We watched how many "towel" chairs lacked people for hours into the day. One instance, it was nearly 230pm until someone returned to the 4 reserved shade/ poolside chairs - comically and loudly citing their morning at Epcot prior to coming to the pool. IMO, towel/ 1 token belonging-reserved situations need to be moved if not there within the hour (and that's generous). This coupled with the reduction in chair quantity makes is very hard to get a chair. Beach Pool had a line before opening and the splash pad even had a woman throwing her belongings over the fence (to the desired chair) prior to opening. Just had to laugh - it's out of control.

Currently staying at the Grand Floridian. I may be in the minority but imo there needs to be another pool. No chairs available at any pools unless you stalk them out early in the morning which I’ve seen people do. ((not planning on doing this at a deluxe resort ever) Would love to see maybe a “quiet” pool in the works for the renovations.

Anyone else have an opinion on this?
We stayed at GF about a year ago and didn't have too much trouble. Although in my case we were in the splash pad area where there were not many people.

Chair hogs are definitely still a thing at Stormalong Bay despite the scanning and the wristbands. It's actually the worst resort pool for it out of everywhere I've stayed at. Epcot being so close by means people will claim chairs first thing and then stroll over to Epcot half the dang day. Every one of my BC & YC stays I've seen this type of behavior (often times they will loudly boast about it).

What the scanning and wristbands do is make it more possible for people who don't get there right when the pool opens to get chairs, but the hogs grab a lot of the good ones so you will probably end up sitting in the sun. Like PP said if all I see there is a towel and nobody comes back within a reasonable amount of time I will absolutely move it and take the chair.

Just got back from VGF and was amazed at how many people were at the pool in the morning putting stuff on chairs and leaving! One family saved 4 chairs and didn’t come back till 5:30! I mean that’s ridiculous! They absolutely need another pool!

Clear opportunities here - 1) install band access to the pools like the Poly (and other resorts have), 2) increase chair capacity, 3) implement a time limit policy for unattended chairs (30 min - 1hr), 4) train pool attendants to monitor and enforce (non-guarded pools could have pool hosts actively engaging with guests, placing chair tags, removing towels, etc), 5) improve signage / communications, etc. I'd imagine this would boost guest satisfaction greatly.

The Deluxe pools are being infiltrated by the non deluxe guests. Last year at the GF pool I overheard a group saying the needed to get the monorail back to MK to get the bus back to their resort. When that happens on an already crowded week , guests of the resort can't even enjoy the amenities. I'm totally for stormalong bay policy at every deluxe resort.
We are here now and witnessed this exact thing, a family of 5, after being at MK came over to use the pool. They parked their stroller, full of park stuff, snacks and balloons too, they all took turns changing clothes, took up multiple chairs, they bragged how they heard this "hack" for a midday pool break. There IS a cast member at the Beach Pool gate who I spoke too said the resort and cast members are aware of people doing this however at this time there is no way to enforce resort guests only. She said they (Disney) is working on this problem specifically with GF. We are DVC and most deluxe resorts we have stayed at make us scan into the pools, BC, Poly, Rivera and BLT. I heard even POP makes you scan in... its ridiculous..

I feel like this type of garbage behavior has always happened at GF and Poly because they’re convenient to MK but like a lot of awful guest antics it’s gotten way worse in the era of TikTok idiots and FB groups sharing “hacks”, and amoral people justifying rule breaking because they feel entitled to get over on Disney due to the high prices. These people have always existed but they’re emboldened bc of socials imo. Not caring they’re not “sticking it to Disney” but to other guests who actually pay for these amenities.

I don’t know why you don’t have to scan in at GF. It’s not foolproof, people still piggyback off actual resort guests all the time at Poly. (People often look at me like I’m crazy/rude for not holding gates open but this is exactly why). But it does help a little. I keep saying they need a wristband system at these resorts like SAB.

I remember a trip we took 10-12 years ago and we had gotten a cabana and a lady in the pool started talking to me. She asked if I was staying at the GF and I replied well I wouldn't be swimming in their pool if I wasn't, she looked shocked and said that she was waiting for her daughter who was at Ivy Trellis then she said so only guests of this resort can swim here? Umm yes pool hopping is no no unless you own DVC....no we don't own DVC we're staying at one of the All Star resorts but they (no clue who they is) said could use the pool...I just shrugged my shoulders got out and went to my cabana.

I'm guessing she asked if she could hang out by the pool to wait for the daughter and the CM said yes and she took that to mean yes you can swim.

Every Disney hotel pool should have a CM at the entrance scanning and giving wristbands and then the pool and deck should be monitored to make sure all guests have bands.
Resort guests should be the only ones with access to their resort's pool.
I have seen this chair reserving and pool hopping go on numerous times over the years, So maddening!
Please everyone - write about this problem in your surveys.

Wife and I were at the GF the week after Easter. First time at the GF since 2005. We usually stay at the BC/YC but decided to try something different since SB is down.

We stayed in Club. Loved the room, the Club, and the monorail access. However, the pool experience was terrible. No chairs available at the main pool and tons of kids in the hot tub. Plus, the kids were clearly under-age and were unsupervised. The CMs did not monitor the hot tub. Made it tough to enjoy.

The pool experience alone is enough for us to say no to any future stays at the GF.
