i heard a rumor that GC still had hurricane damage and some shore excursions are still being cancelled. anyone been there late december/january?

We were there Thanksgiving and the island was destroyed......We took a taxi to "hell" and the island was a mess......hard rock was still closed due to damage and all the shops were "picked thru" no deals at all. There was only one small resturant opened and it was almost all sold out....12 bucks for a cheezeburger. Rumor has it DCL is trying for get another port so they don't have to stop for the next 18 mos.....that's when they figure it will be close to normal...

I sure wish they would have taken us to another port on our 12/4/04 cruise. :( We didn't do any excursions but just like to walk around & shop. Of course with Cozumel's main road being torn up with construction that wasn't much fun either.

I just booked the semi-submarine excursion for our upcoming cruise in April. I hope it isn't a waste of money. If the island isn't in good shape, why don't they find another port for us to go too?

We were just there over new years and things are returning to normal, although you can see much of the wind damage from the hurricane by looking at the landscape and vegatation. I believe the Hard Rock is now open.

It was very windy on the day we were there and many of the excursions were canceled because of that. But thats the type of weather they get in the winter. It should be much improved when you are there in April.

Those were our general thoughts too on our 12/28/04 cruise . . . our DS (4) loved the tender to GC though and DD (7) and DH liked just walking around. Our stingray swim was cancelled due to the weather. GC shops were definately costly.

I wasn't impressed with Cozumel at all. The main road and sidewalks were torn up with construction . . . we thought it might have been recently started, but one of the jewelers told us it had been like that for 10 months. So much for all the money that gets poured in their from cruise ship guests!

After Paradise Beach we put the kids back on the ship and walked around without them -- there was nothing for them to see.

That is just rediculous and I am surprised that I didn't see it mentioned on the board before our cruise. It was impossible to go down the stree with a simple umbrella stroller. I was thankful that our DS had agreed to stay in the club on the ship so we didn't have his bigger jeep stroller. DH & I are looking into switching to an Eastern cruise for this year.

Are you still going??? Looks like the changed us to Costa Maya for our Thanksgiving 05 sailing.........
