I like the fact that both hotels have private entrance to DCA and rooms with views of DCA. I see that PP is less expensive and wonder what GC has over PP other than theme? What's your personal opinion/preference of these two? Thanks!

PPH does not have a different entrance, hasn't for quite some time now.

But guests there, like guests at DLH, can use the GCH entrance in the mornings when regular people can't (unless, some say, you've just had breakfast at one of the restaurants there).

GCH is very fancy and very expensive. I have never stayed there and have no wish to do so, because I can't see there. I had Lasik in '01 and have all the nasty side effects they don't warn you about, including a very hard time seeing in dark places, so I rush through the lobby to get OUT b/c it's all a mass of shadows to me.

PPH is bright and cheerful and is the furthest away of the 3 Disney hotels. It's also generally the least expensive, and people say it's the least Disney themed of them all. Seems fine to me, but then I haven't stayed at the others (except as a child, when we stayed at the Disneyland Hotel) and i haven't been to WDW so I don't really know what a Disney themed hotel would look like. :)

Check out the websites (disneyland.com), check out your budget, and I'm sure others who have stayed at the GCH will chime in. Good luck making your decision!

Thanks for the info BumberShoot. I never thought of going to Disneyland.com. I have been trying to access the website through Disney.com which takes forever to load so I gave up. I've been using Intercot and the UG for information.

It would seem that GC is more in line with the deluxe hotels at WDW which we have grown accustomed to. However, one of the main reasons we love the WDW deluxe resorts is the transportation options - bus, boat and monorail. Transportation doesn't seem to be a issue at DL since the parks are within walking distance.

I'm off to explore Disneyland.com. Thanks!

We stayed at the Grand Californian with a theme park view in the summer and if we were to go back to Disneyland (which I am sure we will do one day!) we would definately stay there again. I personally loved the theaming and the fact that we could go on Grizzly River Rapids and then be back in our room to change clothes with in a matter of minutes was very handy!! We too stay in the deluxe hotels at WDW and Disneyland Paris so if these are they types of accomodations you prefer then the Grand Californian will definately be for you!!

Hi Friend,

We are also WDW folks. DVC members also. We will be celebrating Christmas in Disneyland this year.
If your budget allows there is no choice but California Adventure. We have stayed at both years ago. Looks a bit like Wilderness Lodge but more updated and wonderfully themed.
Enjoy

I've stayed at both. The Grand Californian is nicer but is much more expensive. A little less walking distance to the parks. Paradise Pier is also nice, I stayed in a theme park view room on the top floor 2 weeks ago and had a view of both California Adventure and Disneyland. Could see the fireworks!

I have stayed at all three hotels over the years, multiple times, and I find the GCH to be the 'least Disney-fied' out of all of them. It has very few noticeable Disney touches (there are some subtle, hidden ones but you have to really look for them). I think DLH is the MOST 'Disney' (meaning the most blatant Mickey touches all around) of the three hotels, with PPH coming in second and GCH third in terms of Disney details. However, that is probably not my order of preference in DLR hotels. They all have pros and cons, frankly.

I used to stay at DLH a lot in the past, because at that time that's all there was! I have a lot of good memories there, and loved a lot of its old shops and restaurants which are now gone. There was no PPH or GCH to try out. I liked the DLH a lot for its pretty grounds with waterfalls, koi fish, Goofy's Kitchen, etc. But all those things can still be enjoyed even if you stay at one of the other hotels. And the long walk through DTD to get to the parks from DLH is annoying, as is standing in the (often) long line for the Monorail.

So then when PPH opened up in its first incarnation - Disneyland Pacific, or whatever it was called - there was suddenly a lower-priced option for a DLR hotel. I have stayed at PPH several times for the simple reason that I wanted to stay on-site but at the cheapest price. And most of my PPH stays have been fine (with the exception of the last one). It doesn't have sprawling, spacious grounds and it is not elegantly rustic (like the GCH), but it is a cute little hotel with beachy touches here and there. It really is fine. It has the same cute little Mickey-ears bath products in the bathroom (which DLH also has but GCH does not). It's clean and it's much newer than the DLH so it seems fresh and sparkly. Yes, PPH is technically the furthest out from the parks, BUT because of the handy 'short cut' from the PPH through the GCH lobby, some walking time is shaved off, and we don't have to walk as far as we would if we were staying at DLH!

I have stayed at GCH twice, and I wanted to stay there again this month but finances didn't allow it. Truthfully, that convenient location to the parks really worked wonders for us last year. Staying at GCH really made a difference in the energy level and productivity of my friend for last year's trip, whereas she gets mopey and grumbly when we have to make the long sojourn back to PPH. It is a lovely (but dimly lit) hotel, with lots of ambience that makes you feel like you are sitting in an elegant mountain chalet. The lobby is big and spacious, the hearth is appropriately warm and cozy, there is a piano player there evry night, and during the holidays it is delightful to plop down in the comfy chairs and listen to the carolers by the giant Christmas tree. But, again, all of that can be enjoyed by anyone - even if you are not staying there! The standard GCH rooms are, frankly, not that much more spectacular than the standard rooms at DLH or PPH. You get different bath products (from the popular company H20), and you get chocolates every night, but otherwise the rooms are just basic rooms with tall beds that I had to climb up on! The rooms have balconies, and if you get the DTD view, it is quite a nice people-watching experience! And yes, the entrance to DCA is great, but any DLR hotel guests can use that entrance. But, GCH is SO expensive even with great AP rates. It just is not possible to stay there all the time.

So I would say that, strictly from a convenience standpoint and as far as what seemed to generate the best and most productive trip for my group of people, GCH is where I would prefer to stay if I could. Otherwise, PPH would be next choice because it has the lowest price and the nifty 'short-cut' through the GCH lobby to save some walking time. But I always end up somewhere on the DLH property because we alwasy eat at Goofy's Kitchen! So I get a taste of all three hotels each trip!:thumbsup2

Neither! I like Disneyland Hotel best. It's only slightly more than PPH and much nicer, IMO. It's also a lot less than GCH. While nice, I still prefer DLH over GCH.

I will pick the GCH over the other two every time. I have stayed at them all many times but I love the GCH! If you can afford it you should do it atleast once! :)

I have not stayed at GCH, but I have stayed at PPH twice. I was considering staying at GCH and looked into the differences between the two hotels a few months ago. From what I remember, GCH offers turn down service (I believe it's for everyone, not just for concierge), 24 hour room service, and robes in the room. However, I have heard that the rooms are smaller. If you can afford GCH and the style appeals to you, I think you should stay there. I personally like the beach theme and lower price found at PPH. I'm sure you'll have a good time where ever you decide to stay. :wizard:

We love the GCH! The lobby is so beautiful, the pools are fun, and the entrances into Downtown Disney and California Adventure are great!

It is more expensive, but we really like the understated decor, huge fireplace in the lobby, rich wood and craftsman style. It kind of reminds me of the WL in WDW, but with a very different theme.

Also, the character breakfast at Storyteller's with Chip & Dale is the best character buffet we've ever had at either WDW or DLR.

i also have stayed at all 3 and done concierge at the grand and the pier.
the grand is our fav but I really like paradise pier. probably since my fav character meal is the lilo and stitch and i happen to love yamabuki. so being close to those is a plus.but i dont like the walk though not long but after a long day in the park it can seem that way. Either way it's Disney go where you can afford and enjoy! The room is mostly for sleeping anyway.

i disliked the Disneyland hotel....

That is a good point to make - the walk from the PPH (even using the short cut through the GCH lobby) to either park is technically not that long, but you are exactly right in that after a long day in the park, when your feet are about to fall off, or your legs have gone numb, that walk back to the PPH seems like it is 100 miles! And the GCH technically may not be that much closer to the parks than some of the off-property hotels, but it seems like it is, and, again, at the end of a loooooong day, seeming close counts for a lot!:goodvibes

I have stayed at the GCH and the PPH. I would pick them both for different reason. GCH is beautiful, the lobby is gorgeous, the rooms are nice. They are a bit small but they are workable. :) I loved the Bambi theming in the rooms and the turn down service/chocolates we got every night. But the cost is prohibitive for us so we are not able to stay there often, in fact we've only been able to stay there once. PPH has bigger rooms but doesn't have the "resort" feel that the GCH does. But, I still love the PPH, the Disney beach theming is so much fun, the rooms are larger and the staff was just as excellent as at the GCH. PPH is cheaper but again, I've only stayed there once. I would do them both again but I also realllllllllly want to stay at the DLH....once we get our AP's I'm going to see what I can do about a weekend at the DLH before March is over. :) But for me....if $$ was not an issue I would go with the GCH.

Grand CA in a heartbeat. I see you are a WDW veteran; Polynesian, AKL, and GF in your history. Do you really want to step down from there or keep things similar?

There is no question that if you have the money for GC, then that should be your choice. Also, if you are going during "swimming weather"; I urge you to choose the GC, because the pools are infinitely superior to the motel concrete rectangle at the PP. That said, if money is tight, then you will find the PP acceptable in a more limited way.

First trip to California, so if things come together, we're "splurging" on GCH! Won't probably get back for years, so we'll splurge this time! Reviews have been awesome! Can't wait!
