When we used to pay cash for hotels (we're DVC now), we would stay at the PPH. Get a park view on a high floor (above the palm trees.) You can get a great view of Paradise Pier and can see WOC from the back side from your room with the music piped into the TV. We think it's a better view than from the VGC rooms or the special viewing area. We've stayed at all the on-site properties in a whole bunch of different views/towers/etc and found that PPH was the best considering the lower cost, short walking distance to the parks, Disney decor, smaller crowds, really close parking, good room quality, great park view, etc.

GCH is a ton more expensive, but a really nice place to be. Nice enough that we eventually bought into DVC to stay in the villas :thumbsup2

We just got back from renting points for a 2BR villa. We requested the points right around 11 months, but it took a little while before some came available. Once Christmas gets closer, the GCV owners will have a hard time turning down 50% of the cash up front to book it for you through David's. Have patience!
