If so, what were your symptoms like? did you still have your scheduled period etc?

Thanks,

I got pg with ds #1 on the pill (and yes I was taking them regularly). My first symptom was the no period followed very shortly by 4 months of day and night m/s. If you think your are pg and on the pill please see your dr right away.

I need to know the answer to the question about having a period. If you were on the pill did you still have a period?

I got pregnant with my dd when I was on the pill (antibiotics and the pill do not like each other;)). When I was on the pill, I had a monthly visitor. Until I got pregnant with my dd, and that was my most tell-tale sign I was pregnant. I didn't have any break-through bleeding or any false periods or anything else like that.

::yes:: I got pregnant while I was on the pill. That's why my children are 13 months apart! :scared1:

This thread is scaring me! I know antibiotics can decrease the efficacy, but some of you weren't on antibiotics and took the Pill in time??

I have seen many people get pregnant while on the pill. MOST (the GREAT Majority) have not taken it at the proper time. Birth control pills are designed to last 24 hours. If not taken every 24 hours, they can be less effective. Most patients that I have seen become pregnant while on the pill admit to having been late taking one or more or missed one or more completely. Of course, there are patients who get pregnant regardless of the method of birth control used and some use the pill faithfully and take it properly. But those patients (who get pregnant when using the pill correctly) are few and far between.
Most women miss their period and that is how they know they are pregnant (even if on the pill). Spotting in early pregnancy is very common. I have NEVER (in 7 years of doing OB) had a patient who is pregnant continue to "have my period" when pregnant. Spotting in first trimester, yes. Bleeding like a period, regularly when your period should come, NO.
Why do you think you might be pregnant?

I know a woman who had to go on the pill to get pregnant. And my mom knows a woman who got her period the entire 9 months she was pregnant, so it can happen even if rare.

*sticking her fingers in her ears*

I'm not listening... I don't believe you... It can't really happen...

LOL

Seriously, though, I know of at least 5 women who did, but they were all on antibiotics at the time. Each time I use antibiotics now (which is often), I won't let him in the same room with me =)

YES!!! Both of my children were conceived while I was on the pill. But let me first say, I was not on a *normal* pill. All birth control pills make me extremely nauseous. At the time, the only one that didn't bother me was Micronor, which is a progesterone only pill. I knew that its efficacy rate was 96% versus 99.9% like regular pills. I thought "heck, 96% is pretty good." What they neglected to tell me was that when taking Micronor, you have a VERY NARROW pill-taking window. Meaning, you pretty much have to take the pill at the exact same time every day. If you are as much as 1-2 hours off of your schedule, this can cause you to conceive. Other pills are not that restrictive. Anway, I did not know this. I will say, I took those pills faithfully every day. But, I'm sure on the weekend I took it a bit later in the morning. After being on this pill for 3 years, I conceived my DD. I thought it was an odd fluke and would never happen again. So, after she was born I took it again. Three years later, DS was conceived. At this point, I moved and changed OB/GYNs and told him my saga. He said he would NEVER put a patient on Micronor as a *serious* birth control. He only gave it to breastfeeding women who needed some extra protection. Great! Well, to answer you question, both times I was pregnant I still missed my period even while on the pill.

When I got pregnant, it was my own stupidity!! I was 23 years old at the time and had never taken the pill. My doctor figured, I was 23 years old so they didn't explain a thing to me. Because of my age, they just assumed I knew about the pill! I was told to take x pills during the month, and Y pills when I was on my period. Well, I was bleeding, so I started on the Y pills, then back to the x pills after. I had no clue that the pill makes you bleed (I thought it was my period) when you 1st start taking them and I had my system so out of whack it's a wonder I was fertile at all. ROFL The end result, a 6 LB. 1 oz. healthy baby girl! :)

I got pregnant twice on the pill! First time & the fourth time! Had regular periods while on the pill...NO period when I was pregnant.

But I also got pregnant using just about everything! That's why we have 6 kids! Even the MD said I must be VERY fertile!

But I wouldn't have it any other way!

Pooh67_68,
I didn't say it couldn't happen (having a period every month while pregnant) I just said I have never seen it happen. I have "heard" people claim to have an aunt, sister, friend etc whom it happened to, I have just never SEEN it.
I would be mighty mighty worried about a baby and mother if that mom had bleeding EVERY month while pregnant....... Heck, I worry about a mom and baby every time I have a woman complain of spotting in early pregnancy (which happens a lot and is usually not a problem).
I have used the pill to regulate women's periods too. I have also had women get pregnanat 'immediately' after stopping the pill. I haven't used it to get someone pregnant though.

Still maintain that most pregnancies that occur while women are on the pill are because it was not taken properly (or the efficacy was affected by outside influence).

Christine, that has been the case most of the time in my practice (not taking at same time every day).

I do have a patient who got pregnant THREE times on three different pills who used them properly (same time every day etc). So it does happen, but pretty unusual.

Ok...so I switched to the patch.....how much safer am I....?

Yes to both. I dont' remember what triggered my having the Dr do a pregnancy test when I went in for my checkup. Just things not seeming quite right.

I also didn't realize how far along I was until the sonogram, there were some other tests it effected so the results were a little off.

Okay...I have no kids, so obviously I did not get pregnant on the pill, but I did have to stop taking the pill because it made me feel like I had horrible morning sickness all the time.

Oh, and 3 mos before my wedding I missed a period....called the Dr's service to find out what to do, should I restart next pack, am I pregnant, etc? Well, lady on the service made fun of me, told me this was not an emergency and "sweety, welcome to the wonderful world of the pill, you'll occasionally miss a cycle!" Well, Gotta tell ya, 3 mos. before my wedding, this lunatic bride was less than thrilled with that response!

Dax, Patch has about the same efficacy rates at oral contraceptives. Big advantage is not having to remember to take it every day. I guess that would make you "safer" if you forgot to take the pill sometimes. I haven't had a patient get pregnant on the patch.....yet. But I have had some get pregnant because a patch came off and they didn't get it put back on in time etc. so again, user error.

Poohbear1029, I am sorry the service person made fun of you. That is too bad. It was an emergency to you! Occassionaly missing a period while on birth control happens. Most often, it does not mean you are pregnant, you just miss one. If a patient reports that to me, and has remembered to take her pills on time, it does not concern me. If she has missed pills or been late taking them, well, that is a different story.

The Nuva Ring is a great choice for birth control. Low side effects (lower than any oral contraceptive and lower than the patch) and you only have to remember to put it in and take it out ONE time a month.....
