Gotta stop reading the dis

I have posted on many boards. I like the Dis, but agree with the OP in this regard - the posters in this forum are a nasty group. They will go on personal fact finding missions to discredit a poster with whom they disagree. They will dig back through previous posts looking for any ammo they can find instead of dealing with the points made by a poster directly. That is against forum rules, but it happens in many, many threads.

In reality, it isn't the posters that are the problem - it is the complete lack of moderation. Mods only jump in when a post is reported. It has proven to be completely ineffective and has resulted in broad subjects having to be removed from discussion altogether.

You keep bringing this up, and honestly-I don't see the issue.

Unless you're in the habit of posting completely inconsistent views, why would what you said previously be an issue even if someone did take the time to look your past posts up? :confused3 (personally anyone who has that kind of time can come over to my house and get some of my stuff done for me, ok?)

Even if your positions have changed on an issue, then a simple explanation would erase any question, right? "I used to believe "X" but after "Y" experience, I believe "Z". Problem solved.

I said it yesterday-there are places out in the wide world of the internets where people agree with everything that everyone says because they all basically hold the same viewpoint. I've visited some of those boards and find them dull. Others enjoy them. It's a big beautiful world and everyone can find a home.

The big thing about the Dis I learned about a year in. DON'T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY .. You don't know these people , who gives a rat's behind what a stranger behind a computer thinks. I have made amazing close friends here , that I see often. I have learned so much . The dis boards can be a fun and sometimes educational board to be on. Learn to appreciate that side of it and close out a thread if it upsets you , giggle to yourself, call them an ugly name and move on . Life is too short to take any message board on the computer so seriously .

:thumbsup2

Because it is a violation of the board rules to get into a personal debate with another poster, and going back and pointing out these inconsistencies requires that level of personal confrontation. In other words, it is a direct violation of the Dis forum rules, and it is broken every day. Why is it broken every day? Because people on the Dis want to get personal - they want to tear down other posters. What other reason could you have for going back and looking for a way to attack a poster with content from a previous post, sometimes made YEARS before?

In intelligent debates, the points are discussed, not the person making the point. One person can argue one side of an issue today, and the opposite side tomorrow. It is not important which side you argue - just the points made. But not on the Dis.

Okay, well, the DIS apparently isn't for you. I'm sure you can find another site that you like better. No need to announce your withdrawal though. You can just stop posting and reading.

Really so the OP and anyone else should just accept it for what it is...there is no chance for the DIS to change and evovle? Let anyone say anything to anyone? To me that could wind up chasing away a lot of great people who have a lot to offer to the board. I get the need for a thick skin but sometimes the hatred is over the top. Those who are so misinformed about a topic and cant see beyond their own nose is amazing around here.

OP:hug: There are many days when this place gets to be too much and I do have to walk away, then I try to remember the people I do enjoy discussing things with, I dont have to agree with them to have a discussion, but I enjoy the ones who can do that in a mature manner, although some days they are hard to find but they are out there.

Naw, there are people like that everywhere. It's just that they are smart enough to keep quiet when they can't hide behind the anonymity of the internet.

I belong to a couple of what I refer to as "mom boards". We are all supportive and respectful of each other's opinions....there. Now that I am FB friends with some of them I've learned that several are actually cruel, bigoted, racist, and intolerant. But they hide it well when faced with strict moderation.

Not only does it sound simple, but it has been implemented successfully around the globe. :rolleyes1

Then perhaps those are the boards where you would be more comfortable? :confused3

It seems that the moderation on this one is not enough for you, and you would prefer a more controlled environment.

I've been hanging out here for years and I don't see any real issues with moderation. I also hang out at other sites that allow me to discuss things I can't here. I don't keep all my posting eggs in one basket.

Or, even better, I can work to get other boards changed. I will post here as long as I can follow the rules, but I will continue to work to effect change, even if you and I disagree about the need for that change.

Seriously, you just suggested that I post elsewhere. How is that a tool used in debate? It is typical of the Dis mentality. :upsidedow

I got my feelings hurt in an early post I made on the Community Board. As I stated on the thread at the time, I couldn't stand the heat, so I got the hell out of the kitchen. There seem to be many many lovely people here, and I am quite happy to remain. I just won't be posting any rants about any personal issues I may be having! LOL

I have already read too many threads on:

1. Wheelchair access to buses
2. Boys going into the girls' washrooms
3. Missing school to go to Disney
4. Big kids in strollers
5. Scooters

I'm just skipping those now because I think there has not been an unexpressed thought on any of those issues. LOL

My advice is to take what you want, and leave the rest.

All the best to you and your family!

Debate?!? :lmao:

Why is it you insist we debate every li'l thing? It's called The DIS Discussion Forums.

Sorry, but if a person makes inconsistent statements in a debate it WILL be brought up. That's not personal, that's pointing out inconsistent reasoning. And again, if your position has changed due to life experience over years, why would that be so difficult to say? Or if you're playing Devil's advocate to make the discussion more interesting, why is that hard to say and why would the resurrection of a previous opposite statement bother you?

If it's a rule, it should be obeyed, but I don't understand the need to have a moderator run to your defense when the explanations are so easy.

I did suggest that because you seem unhappy here. I wouldn't stay posting somewhere if I was unhappy, but that's just me.

This is the second or third post like this from you. So why are you still here?

There are lots of other places to hang out on the internet, if you find the mods lacking. :confused3

There's nothin' to complain about on those boards. :lmao:

Careful, that's not proper debating.....:lmao:

I don't get it, I guess. I've belonged to boards that I eventually left because they changed and I didn't like the changes.

Not a big deal. You move on and find somewhere else to hang out. :confused3

But I guess that isn't very dramatic, is it?
