We have booked the DDP for our trip to WDW but I was wondering what do the people of USA eat on a day to day basis. I love stew, mince, steak pie etc but I have never been able to get these types of food whilst visiting WDW.

Depends really whereabout in the US. Sheperds by, pie and chips, etc is very much British food and not the common fare over there.

Corn is a big thing, as is corn bread, steak, lots of fast food (it really is very commonplace in the daily or at least several times a week) diets of many.

Are you specifically wanting these types of foods while there, or are you asking what kind of alternatives are recommended for you to try?

My experience of staying with DH's godparents in US was far more steaks and fish cooked on bbq with salads. Also a lot eating out and bringing leftovers back for the next day.

The foods you mention are more for colder weather - not much call for warming stews in Florida.

I know from being on US moms forums than slow cookers seem popular so chicken in sauce - often made with condensed soup.

Chicken pot pie and pot roast are popular - try perkins, cracker barrell for meat and two veg type cusine. Also meatloaf, fried chicken.

We used to go out to dinner quite frequently. When we were eating at home we would typically eat chicken, steak, fish, sometimes BBQ but not always. We also had burgers and sloppy joes etc. We used to eat a lot more salad than we do here. That probably had something to do with the great salad bars that we had close to where we lived.

I lived in LA for a few months and never saw a pie once.

I think cuisine varies greatly from state to state but when I was out there most of the food was salad, Mexican, Hawaiian, and a lot of Asian food.

Also had pizza, pasta, burgers, what I'd just call "normal food".

I think to find the more traditional English food you're talking about you'd need to go to Raglan Road or the UK pavilion in EPCOT.

I think a lot of American families tend to eat out a lot as it is just a cheap.

Have you tried Steak and Shake at Lake Buena Vista? When we ate there in feb it was $17 for 2 adults and a child for 1 course and drinks !!!!! How cheap it that?? The food was great :)

Rachel :)

Some of our American friends post on Facebook every night where they have eaten, I can only recall 1 meal at home they have posted about this year, every night they eat out.

Forgive this American for jumping in here. There are some dishes that are served through out the country, then you have different regional food also.

We cook at home and eat out. At home I tend to make pot roast with vegetables, salads, different kinds of casseroles, spaghetti, tacos, baked chicken etc.

During the warmer months, many of us like to grill out.

As to eating out every night, it is not the norm, but there are some who do. Depending on what is going on, one might grab fast food, but if there is more time, then go to a nice sit down restaurant.

Someone mentioned Cracker Barrel, which is a favorite of my family. You can get meat and vegetables, sandwiches, salads, or breakfast items.

We do have quite a few Irish or British pubs near me that will serve, Shephards Pie, Fish and chips, Plowman platter, and stew. Most of these "pubs" will also serve burgers and such.

I have admit the best Chinese food I ever had was at a restaurant in Hawkhurst.

Another American here. While yes, there are very different cuisines depending on the region it is becoming less common with alot of people moving out of state for jobs and such. Mexican food used to be much more common in Texas (where I'm at) and California. Now it's popular everywhere. As far as eating out alot, some people do and some don't. We have long commutes to and from work and, with most households having both partners working, yes - alot eat out after a long day at work. Usually somewhere like Chili's or Jason's Deli or something. Mexican is very popular as is American style establishments like Chili's where you can get just about anything from fajitas, entree salads, burgers, steaks, seafood, etc. When we cook at home we like casseroles, baked meals and grilling outside. Crock pots (slow cookers) are popular for those at work all day. I saw someone mention corn being extremely popular? Hmmm...not so much. It's an accompaniment with some meals but I wouldn't say it's wildly popular. A really good burger is high up there though. Not a fast food burger but a freshly made, high quality, juicy one with several great toppings offered. You will find tons of competition in that market. Salads are also big here. We do try to stick to a traditional meat+starch+veggie approach in general. Here in Texas though Mexican still rules. Enchiladas, quesadillas, chips and salsa, fajitas. I make quesadillas for my children several times a week. Easiest thing in the world to make.

One thing to understand about us Americans is that, with such a melding of cultures from all over the world here, it's really difficult to answer what we eat in general. Most of us have experienced so many different types of food that we like a wide variety and try to incorporate that into our everyday eating habits. We don't like eating the same thing over and over again. We like variety and changing it up constantly with new recipes. If you make Mexican one night (or eat it out), you have spaghetti bolognese the next night or maybe make stir-fry.

I will say though that, although you're not going to find too many shepherds pies or fish and chips around at restaurants, I know plenty of families that make shepherds pie alot at home. It's one of our favorite meals to make. I'd consider it what we call comfort food, which is popular but a dying breed, in this day and age. People like spicier, more bold flavors nowadays. Sweet and savory is very big here. Comfort food restaurants don't do so well here anymore. Cracker Barrell is an exception but they are usually on the outskirts of major cities, at least around here they are because they just don't fare well in the bigger areas where people prefer more savory dishes.
