Got Ipod What accessories do I need?

I finally tracked down a 30 GB Ipod for DD (14) at Target. I don't know about your part of the country but they have been hard to locate around here for the last few weeks. Now I need to know what else should I buy? There are so many possibilities, docks, chargers, speakers, FM transmitters, etc. What do you use and how much should they cost?

I like the charger that plugs directly into an outlet, so you don't have to use the computer to charge the I-pod's battery. I've seen it run between $29 and $39. Also, a case that will protect the I-pod from bumps and scratches is a good idea. I think these start at $20. There's also the armband if your daughter plans to listen to the I-pod while walking/running/working out. I've seen these as low as $12.99 and as high as $30. Most of the accessories are available online at Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. You don't need to buy all Apple-brand accessories either. There are some other names available that are cheaper.

Thanks, I want to get what she needs but after buying the Ipod I can't buy a lot that isn't necessary.

Got DD an iPod mini last Christmas and it pretty much come with most of what you might need. I just got myself the new video iPod and while it's VERY cool. The black glossy finish scratches very easily. I immediately got the transparent film protector and installed it. Nice! Clear and protected. I've been holding out for a case, but since the thing is so new, the accessories aren't all in place yet.

Anyway, I second the items suggested above. Check out iPod Lounge, they have great reviews about accessories and other items that help you to make a logical decision about your purchases.

If I could only pick two, I'd get a case protector, and the USB power adapter. I ordered my dh's iPod from Apple. I got a $20 student discount, and free shipping. The adapter - which really should come with the iPod, but that's another gripe - was $26.

Your iPod should have come with a USB cord that will plug from the computer into the iPod and from the iPod into the wall charger. It should have also come with the wall charger.

That is all you really *need*.

You could buy her a case if you like, or a car charger (unless she is going on really long car trips she doesn't really need it). The FM Transmitter is nice but again not a necessity unless you plan on letting her listen to it in the car all the time.

You can find cases and car chargers on ebay for about $.99 each. The shipping is inflated but they are still cheaper than buying it in the store. If you want the name of the place I bought mine from PM me. It isn't me, I don't know them, I just use them for purchasing accessories.

Depending on how many CDs she has you could buy her a gift card for the iTunes music store (which when put in her stocking could confuse her).

I didn't spring for an FM transmitter, but am using the adapter from my Sony CD Walkman in the car. It looks like a cassette tape with a wire attached to it. The only problem is, it only plays, not charges.

There was a thing I saw at Sam's that was a car charger/transmitter in one. I am definitely getting one!

I agree with the above poster that recommended a silicon sleeve to protect it from scratches.

Defineately get the case and they are cheaper than the skins......actually I found some at JCPenney made by Rolfs and on sale they were 9.00 several different colors and had a belt clip and a regularly clip. I also like the plug in charger. Those are the 2 that I would say are the most important. Perhaps later on the FM transmitter (birthday maybe) .

Go the Apple website and go to the education tab. It will take you to the discount. I bought one for my DD this week and got $20 off the Ipod and anothe $5 off the armband.

Instead of buying speakers to go with my iPod, I bought a Y adapter so that I can plug my Ipod directly into my tuner. That might be an option for you.

As far as the FM transmitters, depending on where you live, they could seriously suck. I tried one for about a week. The station I needed to tune into only worked halfway on my commute to work, then I would need to switch stations. Neither of these channels worked very well even when the were "working".

I would def. recommend a casette adapter if you have a casette player in your car over the FM transmitters.

I just bought two nanos yesterday. I went on shopzilla and saw that everyone's prices are within $5, so I went on the Apple site and got free shipping and engraving. I bought cases and itunes gift cards. I'm a real novice, but I feel better knowing I won't have to drive all over creation looking for them.

I don't know what you consider an arm and a leg, but DH just gave me a 60G w/ iFusion speakers for my b-day (and a camera connector to unload my vacation photos!) I *LOVE* the speakers, they are in a compact, sturdy case, the iPod charges along w/ the speakers when they are plugged in (so no need for an extra adapter plug). I can listen while it's plugged or while it runs on batteries. There is a place to store the iPod in the speaker case as well as another compartment for earphones, cords, etc. They sound great, too.

I also put on a screen protector and it's working great. I don't feel the need for a different case (but I'm not a "clipper" either). The only other accessory I'd like is the transmitter thingy so I can use it in the car.

Yep - it' a rip. If you look on the reviews on Apple's site, and Apple message boards you'll see that everyone is complaining about it. The chargers came standard with my mini, but now you have to pay an extra $26 for it. It's gouging by Apple.
