Got a Good Book Recommendation?

The Hunger Games trilogy is great and a pretty easy read.

I also loved George R.R. Martin's series, the first book is A Game of Thrones, the HBO show is also great, season 2 starts in April

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

or

Slumdog Millionaire by Vikas Swarup (Much better and quite different than the movie).

These are my two favorites! :flower3:

Anything by Karin Slaughter or Lisa Gardner

Just finished 11-22-63 by Stephen King. Great as always.

Leisha Kelley & Francine Rivers are good authors also.

Agree with Lisa Gardner and King..also, Koontz, anything by Lee Child, Nelson DeMille, Dennis LeHane, Elizabeth George, Harlen Coben (I've worked in a book store 10+ years and we used to get a free book a week..discovered so many great authors). I also like Hunger Games, and am now reading Water For Elephants (very good) and listening to The Help while I scrapbook. Also reading Decision Points, very interesting.

The Walk and Miles to Go by Richard Paul Evans were both very good. The 3rd book in the series comes out this spring.

I also agree with The Hunger Games Trilogy....good.

I enjoyed the series on HBO - Game of Thrones...I may have to read the books.

I am currently reading Ali in Wonderland and it is a really good...hope it interesting to the end.

Another Hunger Games vote..

I've also become addicted to the Stephanie Plum series, there's a million of them and they're pretty amusing. I'm on #6 now. I got One for the Money from the library on the recommendation of a friend and found out later that day that there was a movie out. (Don't watch regular TV so I never know what's going on :))

If you liked The Help you might enjoy The Swan House by Elizabeth Musser.

Other books I've read recently include The Hunger Games Trilogy, and along that same vein of dystopia fiction, I've read the following books that I would recommend:

- The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan
- The Dead Tossed Waves (Book 2 of the Forest of Hands and Teeth series) by Carrie Ryan
- Divergent by Veronica Roth (very good, impatiently awaiting the sequel)
- Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
- Delirium by Lauren Oliver (again, waiting for the sequel Pandemonium)

It could be helpful to narrow down what genre you like, because my goodness there are so many books to recommend :rotfl: Drama, SciFi, Mystery, Romance, Comedy, Historical. I avoid drama these days b/c my poor heart just can't take it :rolleyes1 So I go for lighter stuff. But what I've liked most recently:

Mystery --

*Flavia de Luce mysteries by Alan Bradley. I think there's four of them now. The first is "The Sweetness At the Bottom of the Pie".

SciFi --

*any of the books by A. Lee Martinez
*Dresden Files by Jim Butler (like 9 of them so far, I think)...sort of Harry Potter gets older, snarkier and becomes a private detective.
*The Necromancer, Johannes Cabal series by Jonathen Howard. Gothic, witty, weird. This is the first of the series, with the second one being far less interesting than the first. There's a third out, but not available in U.S. on kindle yet, so haven't read it.

Romance --

*Not big on romance, but several friends and I (all Lit majors...go figure) enjoy the four Aisling Grey/Green Dragons by Katie Macalister. I know...what a premise, but it's a very funny series with romance, mystery, sci-fi all mashed together. Perfect bubble bath readings ;)

NonFiction --

I have recommended this book so many times, and people always love it. "The Poisoners Handbook" -- it's basically about the formation of the first real CSI type lab, but mixes in prohibition, NY political scandals, murder, and lots and lots of poisons. It reads like a thriller but is 100% true.

Historical Fiction --

I have always loved the books by Judith Merkle Riley (sadly passed away not too long ago). Set in medieval times, very big on magical realism, but entirely readable, smart and witty. The Margaret of Ashbury series is one of hers, with the second in the series being the best book.

I really enjoy the Amelia Peabody series.

Here's the series in chronological order -

1884-85, Crocodile on the Sandbank
1892-93, The Curse of the Pharaohs
1894-95, The Mummy Case
1895-96, Lion in the Valley
Summer 1896, Deeds of the Disturber
1897-98, The Last Camel Died at Noon
1898-99, The Snake, the Crocodile, and the Dog
1899-1900, The Hippopotamus Pool
1903-04, Seeing a Large Cat
1906-07, The Ape Who Guards the Balance
1907-08, Guardian of the Horizon
1910, A River in the Sky
1911-12, The Falcon at the Portal
1914-15, He Shall Thunder in the Sky
1915-16, Lord of the Silent
1916-17, The Golden One
1919-20, Children of the Storm
1922-23, The Serpent on the Crown
1922-23, Tomb of the Golden Bird

People always mention the Book Theif and how great it is so I thought I'd try it. Turns out I hate it! I'm on my 3rd try of trying to get through it before it expires on my nook yet again. I just really, really don't like this book and that's very rare for me.

I'm going to check out many of the books listed here! Need some new ideas!

Yet another Hunger Games fan (I have read the first two - waiting for Mockingjay at the library). Loved Hunger Games, but Catching Fire dragged a bit for me.

!

Glad to read this as I was beginning to think I was the only one who didn't love the entire HG trilogy. I LOVED the first book....REALLY LIKED the first half of the second...And only was so/so on the second half and last book. Not sure why it dropped off so much for me, but in the end I'd only rate the first one as EXCELLENT.

Anyone else?

I also HATED The Book Thief. I just could not get into it no matter how hard I tried.

Loved the Hunger Games. If you liked The Hunger Games, try the Maze Runner trilogy. I lovd it!

I just down loaded about 5 free books from Pixel of Ink. Trying to decide what to read first.

Forgot to add I just finished a four book series by Patti Larsen..............Run, Hide, Fight, Hunt. I really enjoyed this series also!

I just finished The Hunger Games trilogy. They were good. Before that I read The Book Thief. It is the best book I have ever read. I had to take a reading break after it. It was like a book hangover. I only had it as a Kindle Library rental. I liked it so much I'm going to go buy it. I was sad to finish it. And I swear I was almost in tears when I had to return the rental. It was an excellent, moving, thought provoking, all around great book.

Also another good one I recommend is "Thirteen Reasons Why".

I'm getting ready to read The Help today. I hope it lives up to its expectations.

I remember really missing the characters in The Book Thief (and also just finished the Hunger Games). I just watched the first season of Downton Abbey on netflix, and now I miss them too (waiting for re-runs of season 2). The Kite Runner and the the following book were amazing (A Thousand Spendid Suns). I loved all of Lisa See's novels.

Anothe vote for Hunger Games here! I'm on the 3rd book now and I can't believe how much I loved these books. Looking forward to the movie but am preparing myself for being disappointed. :lmao:
Saw someone else mentioned Room...GREAT book!!!

It's very wordy, so you need to appreciate both the plot and the narration. I love wordy authors (that's how I got addicted to Stephen King when I was 12 - lol), but not everyone does. It's like the Girl and the Dragon Tatoo series - you love it, or hate it.

I liked The Hunger Games although I think she cops out on something she felt strongly about at the very end. You will know what I mean when you finish the books.

Room, The Help and Water For Elephants are some good older ones.

Matched and Crossed are pretty good Sci-Fi/Romance if you liked Hunger Games. I am 1/2 way through Crossed.

Swamplandia is really good if you like Old Florida/Southern Gothic type fiction. I like her writing.

People really like A Discovery Of Witches. I have to start it.

I was disappointed in the ending of the trilogy. Actually, I think the last book was my least favorite of the three. It should have ended much better than it did, IMO. (Even though it was my least favorite, I did still really enjoy them.)

Another one to add: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo books. The first one starts off a little slow but stick with it.

And on a somewhat unrelated note: My paper copy of The Book Thief arrived today. :thumbsup2

I agree with this:

The author is very good with words. I loved the narration. I could vividly see everythig he was describing. There are several things Death says that made me stop and ponder it for a while. And I don't do that. lol
