GorillaPod

There are a lot of railing around it will work well on. I have used mine to take fireworks pics from a couple places and of the riverboat. My camera is just too heavy to use it most of the time.

I had one of these for my P&S and picked up one for my DSLR. I think I need to play with it a bit more to really get comfortable with using it. Seeing Code's pic makes me want to use mine, but it also makes me cringe! :scared:

I used a Gorillapod with my Canon G5 last December all over WDW. Sometimes I set it on things like tables or wrapped it around railings etc. but I also used my Gorillapod attached to my camera as sort of a handhold or way to steady my camera or as an extension of my hand. Since my camera at that time didn't have any image stabilization it helped especially with fireworks pics.

Also, Google search for Gorillapod discount codes and check the Joby site for promos. I saved $$ that way.

Got mine off EBay from some Hong Kong place. Came in about 9 days. Got the Joby $49 model equivalent for $16 shipped and compared it to one at Ritz Camera last week and it seems to be the exact same product. Figured it was worth $16 to try.

It seems that it would be annoying to try to find things to wrap it around or trashcans and the like that were tall enough to stand it on when trying to get a specific angle.

How do you guys compare the gorillapod to conventional tripods?

How hard is it to bring conventional tripods (at least a foot tall at its minimum height) on rides? I'm thinking specifically of RnRC, Soarin, Dinosaur... stuff that has little nets for your belongings?

I've actually had my Gorillapod attached to my regular tripod for Wishes fireworks recently.

It meant i could take pictures using my SLR on the tripod and had my video camera recording the whole show on the gorillapod. It worked pretty well.

My personal view is the gorillpod is great if you don't want to lug around a full tripod or i know there will be a suitable railing/surface to use it on. However where possible i try and use my full tripod as i know this is steady (and has one of those spirit levelling air bubbles on it).

I try and have the gorillapod with me at all times and the tripod when i can. But i certainly have both with me if i get the opportunity.

Lugging the tripod around Disney is ok. Most rides you can find a way to wedge it in either between your legs or sticking out the net. I was at DL last week on my own and managed to carry around tripod in case, camera bag and camera. Had no problem going on rides.

How often would you say you found something to use it on that was the shot you were hoping for?

How I'm looking at it right now is: Its a hassle to carry around a big tripod and fit it onto some rides quickly... but its hassle to set up the gorillapod and make sure its the shot you intended, that is if you find something to wrap it around in the first place.

I just don't want to spend money (that we cant really afford) on something that wont be worth it in the end.

I would mostly use the tripod for parades and at night, if that helps... or to set up a timed shot so DBF and I can run around the other side to have us both in a picture in front of the castle this time. haha.

All help is appreciated!

The line that I'm looking at is the SLR-ZOOM and I've seen some kits w/ a compact ball head made by Slik. They sale for $65-$70 and claims to be rated for up to six pounds. Does that sound true? I'm just looking for someone with any experence with these. I've seen the photo posted by Code and it looks very cool. Is the ball head necessary or is it worth the extra $20?

I have a slr-zoom model of the gorilla pod. Last year, while visiting NYC, I wen to B&H Photo to buy a ballhead joint for it. The salesperson asked me what I was going to use it for and I pulled out the Gorillapod and my Rebel XT (with 17-40 mm L lens). He didn't want to sell me the ballhead. The guy said he'd sell me the ballhead BUT he would put something in the computer that said that he advised me NOT to buy it. Well, that put me off the ballhead. I left without it.

Since then, I bought a SLIK tripod that happens to have a removal ball joint. If I really want to, I can detach it and put it on my Gorilla pod but I've never done and I manage to muddle through by playing with the legs.

I like the Gorilla pod and have used it in situations where I needed a second tripod. I try to still have the strap around my neck when using it though. I now have a Canon 40D and I haven't used it with the Gorilla pod yet so I'm hoping it'll support the weight.

I use the mid sized Gorillpod for my Canon S3 IS. Works great there. I do not really use it on poles as pictured above (seems like it might be to unsteady for my comfort) but on railings, on trashcans, tree branches, tables and the like, it is good.

I used the medium gorilla pod on my last trip to the World with my K100D. It is not as good as a real tripod, but it helps keep the camera steady. There were a few times that I used it to stabilize the camera on surfaces that were not flat.

For those of you that have one, which one do you have for your dSLR? I have a D60 and I'm not sure if I should get the Gorillapod SLR or SLR-ZOOM. I would think the zoom since I have a 55-200mm lens besides the one that came with my camera. I can't believe that little thing is $60! :scared1:

I have the SLR-Zoom. I have used this with my Alpha 100 & Tamron 28-75 with no issues. I will say I should have got the one w/ compact ball head it's far more handier.

I too, have the SLR zoom (I have the 30D with battery grip) and although it says zoom, it doesn't hold (at least in confidence) my 70-200f/2.8L lens. Does great with every other lens I have though.

Cheers!

Picked up mine on *bay for around $16 shipped. Can't tell it from the branded one. Got one for me and one for my daughter and both are excellent. Use mine with Canon Xsi and have used the 55-250 and 28-135 with no problems.

I wasn't planning on wraping it around something like they show in the pictures and trusting it to not drop my camera (thankfully I'm not that dumb!), but I'm hoping it will at least hold it up on top of, say, a garbage can?
