If you haven't checked it out recently, Google Earth has made HUGE improvements in the details of the Walt Disney World area. My partner has spent the last week "flying" (using Google Earth and the "Flype" app) flying from EPCOT, around the WS, to MK, AK, DHS, and all the resorts. The level of detail in every building is pretty awesome. And best of all, no construction! :rotfl:

I love Google Earth! It's so cool. And the reason I downloaded it....so see POFQ! :rotfl:

For a very unusual view, put +28.4521 -81.7023 in search. The large circle is more than 1/5 of a mile in diameter.

So if you look at Seven Seas Lagoon straight out from the ferry dock you clearly see some rectangle submerged shapes.
Any idea what those would be?

Guess? would that be the remains of the orginal wave machine that was supposed to go with Poly Beach?
I read they used to have one but it eroded the sand too quickly and was turned off even before the resort opened and never used but still there.

I love doing Google Earth WDW. Haven't in a while. Thanks for the heads up! :thumbsup2

Loves that not-so-hidden Mickey CF! THANKS!

And MUCH improved views and info on Google Earth there. It was pretty bad before where Boma and Jiko were quite a few miles apart on that map and I believe Boma or Jiko was somewhere closer to DHS actually. :rotfl: And last I looked, Kidani Village wasn't even there. NOW I see a Super Target right behind AKL as well. Hot DOG! We're there! That will save so much time and $.

OK.

What the heck is this at 28.412334,-81.582001?

It is in the center of the middle of the three islands in the Seven Seas Lagoon? No dock on the island either.

  • Bomb shelters?
  • Hazardous waste site at WDW?
  • Ultra Secret Ft. Wilderness Campground extension?
  • Elvis is really alive and those are air vents to his underground mansion?

Later,
Dan

This one gets my vote.

That's great... talk about touring an empty park!

If you get on the wrong side of some signs (Stitch's Great Escape), then the sign is backwards! (Sort of like Mirror Mode on Mario Kart!)

The wave machine was on another island, Beachcomber Isle, west side of Poly across from Luau Cove. Here's a quote from an excellent site for Poly resort history, http://www.tikiman2001.net/tiki/polynesian-history:

"One of those things that did not last was the wave machine placed off the shore of Beachcomber Isle in the lagoon for guests to play in the waves. The waves were not quite large enough to surf on but they added the sound of the ocean to the beach area over near Luau Cove. After very short time in operation, they shut it down because of beach erosion. It was again tested in 1985 but it was decided to dismantle it and it was removed from the shore of Beachcomber Isle."

Here's a 1971 postcard which shows the wave machine:

It seems to be a tree farm. I have been on the dirt road near it, but it is fenced in and there are gates, so I actually did not go in. My estimate is that the trees are in about a 30-40 foot high range. This is not on Disney property; it is in Lake County just East of US 27 near Lake Louisa State Park.

And it is about 1,800 feet from one side of the large circle to the furthest point of one of the small circles.

Pretty cool pics but don't try it!

I have a feeling they are simply an artifact of the imagery, and not any sort of actual feature or structure.

OK.

I'm not sure what exactly they are, but looking at Bing as well shows that whatever is there has been changed around - so someone has access to the island. The beach may be sufficient for a small craft.

The boxes as shown in Google (probably the most recent images) appear to be roughly 7 feet long, and appear to be open. The Bing images show various arrangements of brown/black or colored boxes, all of which seem to be closed, almost like rubbermaid-type tubs. In a few shots, there are long rows of something. I almost want to say they are some sort of planter arrangements. But its an awful pain to do it there when it can be done anywhere else on property.

My other thought is some sort of zoological thing - bees nests, etc.

Some good views here too, Dan

Make sure you use the enhanced Bing maps.

pretty cool.

Go to googlemaps and type in your home address. Click on the "A" that appears by your address and if it says street view, click on it. They have gone around and driven on streets. My house is clearly visible along with DH and DD's cars. creepy

Prison camp for those who line jump, push their kids in front of you to view parades, and those that do anything to ruin the magic for us adults.

Rumor has it that there is an underground tunnel to this location from every park and resort.

For those with no sense of humor...It's a joke.
