I really want to try and do the goofy challenge in 2011, but am a little nervous. Just wanted to know if any one had any advice or training tips. The princess 1/2 was my first race and I plan on doing between at least 2-3 half marathons before january and a few 5Ks. Is it possible to get ready for both races. it will also be my first full. TIA

In 09 princess 1/2 was my first 1/2. I am a goofy 2010 finisher! It took a LOT of hard work but if you have time to train for it then it is totally doable. It was my first full aswell. You will finish the 1/2 feeling awesome and start the full on not too bad feeling legs. Like I say if you put in the time you can do this :)

good luck

im so glad to hear that you were in the same situation I am in, what type of training program did you do to get prepared?

My advice would be to follow a regular marathon training program as if the only race you're running in is the full on Sunday. A few times during your training, I would run 1/2 the distance of your long run the day before the long run. This will get you used to running longer distances on tired legs. Don't do this every time, 3-5 times will be plenty to get you used to pushing through the tiredness.

I ran Goofy as my first race last year, and the Hal Higdon Intermediate II plan worked pretty well. The key was some of those long back to back runs.

You have plenty of time. Do it.:thumbsup2

I am no expert believe me:goodvibes but last year when I started training I developed a bone spur and did no back to backs just due to not wanting to cause myself further injury and except for a huge blister under my big toe I did ok. Also my longest distance I managed to get in was a 16M in total agony.

I had also only ever done a few 1/2's. You do have alot of time to train so I say go for it. I can't believe I decided to attempt it again:scared1:

I say go for it, I learn this race that I was stronger and more determind then I thought I was and you will never know unless you try.

Hope that babble helps somewhat

Especially this. I take a lot of pride in finishing. Yes, I have work to do to improve my marathon time, but that was expected. The feeling of accomplishment pushes me through a number of the harder training days now.

Yes, you can. You can definitely finish.

My advice: Start right away to build a good base of strength training, XT include stretching and Yoga, and maintain your half marathon running status. I am a John Bingham Marathoning for Mortals participant. As the official training season begins later this summer, you should have a good beginning point with conditioned, not over trained, muscles. During the mileage build-up toward the full you can do back to back weekends. I have done every other weekend from miles 12 up to 20 (5 back to back) and I have done purely marathon training. It's all dependant on your body's ability at the time. Listen to your body and do what you can. Get out there and put in the time. Have fun. Check back, there will be others enjoying the journey with you and we'll all love company sharing it.
