How sad. Another celebrity passing in such a short time. Regarding the Wizard of Oz, I heard that he was originally supposed to be the scarecrow (which is easy to believe if you ever saw him dance), but that he swapped parts with Ray Bolger (who had been cast as the Tin Man).

Ray Bolger was originally cast as the Tin Woodsman. However, he insisted that he would rather play the Scarecrow - his childhood idol, Fred Stone had originated that role on stage in 1902.

I believe that the animatronic dancing man that is featured in the Walt's 100 Year attraction at Disney Studios was modeled after Buddy Ebsen's

FYI - It was aluminum powder in the makeup and not silver that got into his lungs and nearly killed Buddy.
