Just looking for some suggestions. Next year, BF and I want to go to Canada. I've always wanted to go and BF's been twice to go snowboarding and loves it. Basically, we'd like a little Canadian culture, some good food, snowboarding, skiing, snowmobiling and something for me to do while BF snowboards for hours (spa, shopping, etc.) Someplace not insanely expensive (more "moderate" than "Grand Floridian", y'know?) I was hoping you'd have some suggestions over here. Thanks!!

Which part of Canada? I assume you're looking at BC :confused3

Are you planning on coming in the winter? There are some beautiful areas of Quebec to visit to ski as well as the resort areas in the west.

Yes, it does depend on when you are coming and where in Canada you might want to visit. Despite what some people south of us think, we don't have snow year round in all of Canada (unless you were planning on going to the arctic)!!!! Ontario has many nice snowbound destinations, but I would only plan on those in Jan or Feb for your best chances of a good snow base. This year we are having a very mild winter thus far, and we dont have snow yet (that has stayed). Our local ski hill has been able to maintain a ski tube hill open only and the rest are all green. Let us know when you are thinking of travelling and I am sure the Canadian DISers can help with many suggestions!

If you are in the east, you can't go wrong in heading to Montreal for a few days and then just north of Montreal to the Mont Tremblant area for skiing, snowboarding etc. That would cover the dining, shopping and snow activites all within a reasonable distance of each other.

I'm from the Niagara region in Ontario. Niagara Falls is nice, if touristy in some areas (and currently snow-less, much to my disappointment). I also like Collingwood (Blue Mountain in Collingwood is a popular skiing/snowboarding destination in Ontario), and I've heard that Quebec (Montreal in particular) is gorgeous, especially in the winter. Good luck!

We are blessed with a stunningly beautiful country from coast to coast. The culture you are seeking will vary tremendously by region with quaint fishing villages, peaceful lakes and rivers, breathtaking mountain ranges, beautiful cathedrals, old cities with cobblestone streets; well you get the picture.

Tell us when you plan to visit and where you are coming from, and we will be happy to make suggestions.

If you love snow and want to experience something truly Canadian you can't beat the Quebec City Winter Carnival (the first few weeks of February)
Mont Tremblant is also great for skiing and close to Montreal.
Ottawa has a winter carnival - I haven't been to this one. But you can skate through Ottawa on the river and eat Beaver Tails (a big flat fried donut!)
Blue Mountain in Ontario is great but we have yet to get any snow this winter - you would definitely have to wait until mid-jan to assume there would be snow.

I will have to also suggest Beautiful British Columbia! I live in the central interior (1 hour west of prince george in a small town called Vanderhoof). I have traveled most of BC and love it! I also love skidooing! We have a local mountain (45 min) and a larger one 2 hours away. There are lots of wilderness cabins for rent in great skidoo areas, although you'll have to be able to start your own fire! There are many spas in BC, one particular witch includes cross country skiing and skidooing is The Hills Health Ranch in 108 Mile House. A horse drawn sleigh ride with hot chocolate-it was so fun!
Anyway, you should really check out BC!
Good luck!

Don't forget the Maritimes! All kinds to offer here....don't forget that there's more East of Ontario then just Quebec.....I say that only because a friend bought a truck with a GPS unit in it this summer and drove from BC to us in Nova Scotia.....his GPS actually stopped at the Quebec New Brunswick border and told him that was it!!!!

But like the other posters said...it really does depend on what time of year you are coming and what you want. No year round snow here either in Nova Scotia!

:offtopic: I have a cousin who lives in Vanderhoof.

I dont ski so I dont know the best place for skiing but Kelowna BC would be a good place for your BF to ski with lots of places for you to shop.

theres also Banff.its very beautiful there and they have a hot springs.

If you want a lot to do without tons of travelling....Ontario is great!

BF could enjoy Blue Mountains skiing while you shop and spa!

Blue Mountain is less than two hours from Toronto and Niagara Falls.

If you want skiing, scenery and good food, then Alberta is the place to go. Lake Louise and Banff. Vancouver/Whistler(British Columbia) area is also good.

Go to Montreal if you want to party.party:

TORONTO???? T.O. is probably the least likely place to find a true Canadian culture. LOL

However, Ottawa, Montreal, or Quebec City offer exactly what you are looking for. I would actually recommend Quebec City, although I am an Ottawa resident. There are few places like QC, in NOrth America. It is within an hours drive to alot of skiing, snowmobiling, etc, while old Quebec City is just about the closest thing to Europe that you will ever find this side of the ocean.
