good news tsa rethinking pat downs

Yes, what a magical day that would be! Maybe they could do photo pass, too! The vans are being acquired by local police now as well!

Yes those trucks are cool they was using one on boarder wars show it was a ford pick up that just drove slow andthe driver would have a tv seeing the image. So now they could drive the truck down streets and scan the cars to check out if they have drugs or bombs in them.

I do hope they reconsider the full pat down. No matter how you look at, the government does not belong in my underwear.

Been there done that! My husband when he was waiting for my DS & I, did ask one TSA agent why they were doing that to me. She didn't answer him. I was thinking should I or shouldn't I ask why she had to touch the inside of my jeans. Like myself I am sure people are afraid they would be arrested if they show their displeasure with the touching.

Yes, cool until you're the one they are looking at.

Yes you almost feel like they can do whatever they want and they seem to be for the most part. The man that had the urine bag pants and underwear came down. He had to ask if he to pull them up. He looked so timid on TV before. Really something else.

Swab me for bomb residue. That's fine by me, they won't find anything.

Oh, you can't be sure of that. Hubby has some weird wrist injury right now, and has been wearing a wrist brace. He travels for work, and he had been taking the brace (just velcro and a fabric sort of like a scuba suit) off while going through security. I asked why, since there's no metal. So the next time he flew, he left it on. And he got to have it swabbed, and it tested positive. HOW? Who knows. He must have brushed up against something that had something on it... Anyway, everything was fine, they just swabbed it more, but you can't state for absolutely certain that you won't test positive, at least preliminarily, for that test...

yeah but your right i think the local police will use it if they have a bomb scare just look at nycthis year it had two scare with cars n0w if they had the truck they could of used it and see that nothing was in it.

TSA Stitch will be doing Meet and Greets aka Pat Downs at the entrance to the people mover.

yes dont forget that they can use buzz as back up with his lazyer and space ranger pluto could be a drug sniffing dog.

Consistency is helpful for the passenger but not necessarily good for security.

The IRS doesn't audit every taxpayer. Some audits are more detailed then others. The possibility of audit keeps at least some taxpayers more honest then they otherwise would be.

Every knows exactly how the screening will be done then "bad people" know how to hide "bad stuff". Vary the procedures slightly and "bad people" aren't sure if they'll be able to get away with it.. Do a complete check on 90% of the passengers. Will "bad people" take those odds. What about 50%.

We don't want a system where the physical attributes of a passenger (age, dimensions, sex, etc.) determines which passenger gets selected for extra screening.

We also don't want a system where passengers (and by extension terrorists) know exactly what to expect.

Selecting some passengers for secondary screening on a random basis makes a lot of sense.

I agree with a lot of what you say. But, when IRS does do an audit, they tell you what information you need to bring/provide. They can't just decide to escalate things and require you to provide additional information on the spot. What I (and I think others) want is to know what a TSAer is permitted by TSA rules so that we can complain if a screener goes too far. Pretty much that's what IRS does. Of course one is allowed to be represented in an audit. As bad as IRS is, they do offer "due process."

Me too. I went through security at HNL a couple of days ago. They were randomly choosing people to go through the full body scans.
I was chosen.... Woohoo.
I also received a full feel up after I went through. I assume it was because the underwire in my bra showed up in the scan?? If these scanners are doing the job, why couldn't they see that it was a bra?? So I got double duty. I just wanted to go home and I'm sure that's what they're hoping for. I don't care if someone sees my bod with the scanner (even though the radiation issue is not resolved) but it really chaps my hide for a stanger to put their hands on me without probable cause.
If it walks like a bra, quacks like a bra, and is holding up the girls...it's a bra.

danabalana . . . please understand your post is only one of many that lead me to this point. It is just one example of many posts that misuses "random" to describe the process of selecting people.

The method by which TSAers are selecting people to go through the new scanners is NOT random. Random selection is a pretty complex process.

What TSA is doing is using is allowing the front line employee to use discretion in selection. At best the TSAers are using waiting line management techniques - for example, keep 2 people in line for the WBI. At worse they may be using their discretion to decide who to select (and all their personal biases will enter in to their decision making).

Thankfully, TSAers aren't "law enforcement officers" so they don't have arrest power! They have to get a local cop or sherrif - a real LEO . . . they have to follow the law, have probable cause and do some real paperwork and show up in court if they make an arrest.

You all keep saying the pat downs are random or for those that Opt Out of the scanner. But for me the pat down is 100%. I can't walk therefore I can't use the scanner or metal detector. Once you can't use those you're stuck with the new enhanced pat down.

I think it's fair to say that TABs have a limited world view. Exeptions might be people with metal implants or wearers of orthopedic shoes.

What's your take . . . has TSA done an acceptable job of considering the needs of people with disabilities?

I fly to WDW this Sunday so I can't really say until after I try it out.

In the past it hasn't been too bad. I knew that I couldn't use the metal detector and that I would take longer to get through security then everyone else. Previously I would get a pat down and be swabbed and I didn't feel they were too invasive with it. I'd work my way through the normal security line then when I reached the metal detector they'd call over agent to do a pat down. It usually took about 5-10 minutes longer then if I walked.

Now I worry about the extra time to get through security. Previously the only pat downs I saw were only for people who couldn't walk through the metal detector. With people opting out of the scanner I can see a huge increase in TSA personnel for pat downs and a much longer line for the pat downs. There are possible problems because I can't stand and they may not be able to reach certain places on my body while I'm seated. I also have a catheter and leg bag that might be a problem so some TSA agents.

Overall I'm probably worrying more then I need to. I really should just stop reading the articles and threads about the new rules. But I'm a planner and I feel a need to know if something is going to be a problem before the problem occurs so I can work around it.

FWIW TSAers over on Flyer Talk assertthat people whocan not be scanned (such as people who use chairs) won't be selected for the scan.

Please let us know how you are screened . . .

What is needed is consistency...at every airport, by every TSA person. Proceedure can not differ by agent or airport. The general public needs to know what to expect.
I have no issue with children being patted down. My own dd has undergone patdowns before and she's just fine today. Of course, we aren't talking about the newer more 'extensive' patdowns here...just the old-fashioned ones we were all familier with. So, if a child opts out of the new scanner or if he/she sets off an alarm then fine, go with that patdown, but not the more agressive one.
So again...it's a question of consistency. Patdowns can't be changing from person to person or airport to airport. All agents need to be on the same page. Agent Bill can't do pat downs aggressively at Logan while Agent Tom is doing a more cursory patdown for the exact same situation at TF Green.
