I can totally relate to this statement! My oldest DS is home after his first year at school. I love having him home but . . .;)

Good...I'm glad to hear I'm not the only parent who feels like that ;). Where does your son go to school Nancy? I also see you're off on a trip with one of your children...where you staying & who's going with you...just curious. :)

My oldest son goes to Western. He absolutely loved his first year. My other son is in grade 12 and anxiously waiting to hear from Western. Hopefully we'll get good news this week. DS#2 and I are going to Disney in August with a couple of my sisters and their kids. Then in October, I'm going back with my mom (have to get full use out of my AP) By that time both kids will be away at university and I have to console myself somehow. LOL! My DH & I are hoping to go back next May for our 25th anniversary. This empty nest thing might work out okay for me . . . I really do love having my oldest home, but after they've been away at school, they definitely have their own ideas about how the world should work etc., not to mention that his stuff is everywhere.:p

I know what you mean Nancy...DS's "stuff" from residence is sitting in a pile in the middle of the garage floor. It went from residence into the van & onto our garage floor. I keep "reminding" him to clean it up but by the time he "gets around to it", it'll probably be time to take it all back to Waterloo ;).

Sounds like you have a few nice trips to WDW planned...lucky you...enjoy :).

Congratulations all around to those have gotten their letters and good luck to those who are waiting.

Congratulations Julie! Hopefully, you'll hear from the other universities. Even if you don't get a letter right away, sometimes they call closer to the acceptance deadline if they have spaces available (at least that's what happened to me waayy back when I went to university) I'm crossing my fingers for you and Dan :p

Congratulations to you all and your children. I am crying as I read these posts. My ds is almost 7, he's my one and only, and the reality of him growing up and moving away just hit me like a ton of bricks.......if I'm this upset just thinking about it, I'll have to be sedated for the actual event, LOL!!!

I'm in New Hamburg, 10 mins. west of Kitchener/Waterloo and grew up in Kitchener.........it'll be great having so many dis'ers dropping into our region. Dis meets are great reasons to make frequent visits to your kids!!

My husband has done alot of work at both Universities, on the security systems, video surveillance etc. Maybe in exchange for some disney dollars I can get him to set up some live video feeds for you all!!!!:p :smooth:

That is too funny Tracey...I can just see it all now :teeth:

What really got to me Tracey was that when I dropped DS off, he was so excited to be there & just kept saying "OK, Thanks Mom...Bye" but I didn't want to leave him behind...I was so happy & excited for him but it was tough. You've got many years to go before you face that & I don't think anything can prepare you for it either...just another stage in life.

Looks like we'll have quite a DIS meet in Waterloo if we can get one organized :)

My ds told me this week, he couldn't kiss me in public it was embarrassing!!!!

Ahhhhh, it begins.............................................

Congratulations PoohBWV on your DD's scholarship. My DD also got a scholarship from Laurier but I really cried when she got other offers from universities that were much higher. One offered her $17,000 and another $8000.00. In fact, Laurier offered the lowest but that is where she had her heart set on going so....... She had also been guaranteed her choice of residence style and she would really like Bricker also. She has been to the university many times (we live in Waterloo) and feels it is the perfect size for her. I like the fact that although she is away at school she is not really that far.

Congratulations to your DD Tink42 :) ...looks like with all these kids going to University in Waterloo we'll have quite the DIS Meet if we can get one organized :).

Congratulations to Dan on being accepted at Waterloo!!! You must be very proud. I hope his other choices come through too.

Tink, if you don't mind me asking, what were your daughter's marks like? Did she write the Descartes Math test and others to receive the scholarships or were they based on marks only? Did she complete her OAC's or did she complete Grade 12? Did she take all three maths and sciences? My DD will be going through this next year, so I'm curious. I'm also a math major from Waterloo so I'm wondering what the requirements are right now. Thanks for the help!

Damo,

DD is finishing her OAC's. She is going into business so only took 2 maths - Calculus and Finite. She also took Biology. She did not write the Descartes. She has a 91, which for some universities was great but for Laurier was just good. It did get her a scholarship for Laurier although not as high as others and it guaranteed her her choice of residence style. I think PoohBWV could answer this better as her daughter is going into math and won the President's Centennial scholarship (a great accomplishment). The entrance scholarships are based solely on marks and do not need to be applied for, they are offered when the student gets an offer of acceptance. But there are many more scholarships to apply for, some are based solely on marks and some are based on financial need. One thing I would suggest to your DD is to have her participate in many extracurricular activities as a lot of universities are looking at this along with marks in determining acceptance and some scholarships look at this also.

Any other questions, just let me know.

Tink42

Thanks for the advice. DD was just appointed as one of two students trustees for the Halton Board of Education and she's also on the executive of her school council. I hope that helps since it sure is going to take up a lot of her time!!! She's also in band and jazz band and has eight piano students of her own. With all that and her own music lessons while she works on her piano Teaching Certificate, I don't know how the marks are going to end up.:( So far they've been very good, over ninety, but I don't know if she can keep it up.

Damo: As Tink said, my dd did get into Financial Math at Laurier and got the Presidents Centennial Scholarship worth $3000 this year and $5000 each year for the next three years. Her average at mid-term of her best six OAC's was 97.5. She also got an entrance scholarship of $2750 for this year. My other DD who is just completing grade 12 was accepted to Music at Laurier but got just $2000 with an average of 92. She has decided to wait a year before going as she won't even be 18 until December. If you go to www.chooselaurier.ca you can see the entrance scholarship grid. These awards do not need to be applied for and are based on grades only. There are other scholarships available which need to be applied for and are based on volunteer activities etc. as well as marks. Good luck!

Julie,
Did Dan hear from Western? My son missed the cut-off by a half percent. He was pretty disappointed since he's wanted to go to Western since he was in grade 8. I think he would have felt better if he had missed it by more. We took a quick trip to Ottawa on the weekend and it looks like he's going to U of Ottawa. The university and the city is really nice, but it's so far away.:(

Hi Nancy, no Dan just heard that he did not get into Western either. He is very disappointed as Western was his first choice. He has been offered an alternate for his first choice at Carleton but hasn't heard yet whether he's considered "eligible" for his second choice there. His friend was offered the same thing at Carleton. Dh thinks he should just go ahead and accept Waterloo's offer because it is ranked higher. We haven't received anything "official" in the mail yet from any of the universities. Have you? What we know has been by phone or Internet.

Sorry to hear your sons didn't get their 1st choices Janet & Nancy...I guess the double cohort really is making it tough to get into some programs in University. My 2nd DS changed his mind last week :( & decided to go to College. So we sent in his application last week & believe it or not...he got accepted into each of the 3 programs he applied for. That makes me think fewer & fewer kids are going to College and more & more to University. I was really frustrated thinking there was no way he'd get in applying after the deadline like that...I figured he'd end up doing nothing next year :( so I couldn't believe it when he got accepted into all three!

If either of your sons chooses Ottawa we can have a DIS meet :). If I were you though, honestly, I'd be hoping they choose Waterloo. Carleton & Ottawa U. are great Universities & Ottawa is a beautiful city but it's tough having them so far from home . Going to school closer to home (but still somewhere they can stay on Campus) is great because they get the independence they crave and are still close enough for you to "get to them" when they need something...and they do need things. :teeth:

Good luck to both of them with their decisions and be sure to keep us posted.
