Good morning.. I've just been fired........

Thanks for all the kind words..

At this point I'm still too sick - and too tired - to fight with anyone.. I had called him this morning (was trying to get a hold of him all week and kept getting his voice mail) to ask him if he wanted me to send in the copies of the letters from the doctors and he said:

"I'm so glad you called. I was just drafting a letter to you to inform you that you've been terminated."

When I asked why, he said - "You are still on a probationary period and therefore I am terminating you due to excessive absenteeism.."

(Which is true - I missed a week when I was out with a kidney stone - and now the 2 weeks with the pnuemonia..)

I'm not arguing the point that I have missed a lot of work in the past month and a half - however, both times it has been under doctors orders (with notes to back it up) and there just wasn't anything I could do about it..

More than anything, it was his tone that really annoyed me.. From the FIRST day I met him my impression was that he was a "snake in the grass" and a lot of the firings and changes that have taken place over there validates my gut feeling..

As for fighting it, if I recall correctly, when you are on a probationary status (which is 3 months over there) or are hired as an "at will" employee, they can pretty much do whatever they want - regardless of the circumstances.. Also, being a part-time employee (only 3 days a week) I'm not covered by the family medical leave act..

Yes - it's annoying - and I'm going to have to work miracles with our finances - but I would NEVER be comfortable working under him again.. This is only the beginning and I can see LOADS of people losing their jobs over there in the not too distant future..

Luckily I still have 2 paychecks left that I hadn't cashed yet.. It's not much, but enough that I can invest it in eBay fees and hopefully get back to generating some sort of weekly income.. The stinky part is that now my eBay money won't be "extra" money, but that's life..

Oh - and whoever asked about my DH? (Sorry - I'm too lazy to go back and see who it was :( ) He's doing about the same.. He'll never get any better and he's probably a bit worse - but he's "holding his own".. It's that tough ex-Marine attitude that keeps him going..;)

Sounds like a terrible working environment. There are lots of places out there with a very sweet and gentle environment. You'll find one.

One piece of advice though...if you tend to have a lot of health problems, don't seek out a very very small company or business, thinking they will be more understanding. It is easier to spread the workload of a sick co-worker among 20 employees than among 2 employees. A very small company may love you but would not be able to keep you on if you miss a lot of work.

Likewise, if you are the only one in your company that does what you do, it is very difficult on the company when you are ill. Again, better to be one of many.

So sorry to hear that, C. ann. I'm sure you will find an even better job opportunity somewhere else where they are more compassionate. Hope you feel better soon  .

Hey, isn't there something called the family medical leave act? What a jerk for firing you. Hope all ends well!

Well, IMO, if they're going to be that "supportive" of you when your sick, they don't deserve your time.

Hope you have good luck finding something else once you feel better.

And IMHO, your health is much more important than any job.

I was sorry to hear this :(

Seems like your time is better spent on eBay. Hey being your own boss has its benefits. Sending you pixie dust for lots and lots of bids ;)

Tricia

He does sound like a jerk, and it sounds like he discriminated against you.

It was probably a stressful environment anyway. You'll probably be happier somewhere else!:D

Good luck!:sunny:

i hope you feel better.

You don't want to work for a guy like that though... geeze... no heart.

You will find something better as soon as you are up on your feet. Just relax now, get well.

Go in, pick up your check & vomit on his desk...

What kind of business did you work for? What did you do for them? Just curious...

So sorry to hear about this :( I know you were concerned about being fired. Your former boss is a real winner

It was one of those college "financial aid" services.. You know the kind - where they send out mass mailings to the parents of junior & senior high school students - set up appts. to meet with them at hotels around the country - and then give them the spiel about how much they can do for you to insure your child gets the best aid available..

While "some" of what they claim to provide was on the up and up, there were also lots of promises that aren't fulfilled but sound good enough to get unsuspecting parents to sign on the dotted line.. (And it ain't cheap..)

When I first went to work for them I struggled with their tactics (after I was already there and learned more of the inside info) but they did do "some" good for folks that just didn't have a "clue", so I figured as long as I wasn't the one "selling" them on this, but I would just do the work that would provide them with the best of the services that WERE legit and leave it at that..

It's not a "small" company - at least 300 employees, if not more - but I was VERY good at what I did and that's why they kept insisting that I come back after I had left last June..

I had NO personal contact with the clients at all.. I just calculated Family Contributions, Institutional Contributions, filled out the FASFA forms, filled out the SARS (student aid reports that go to the government), ran Triple AAA's (which involves their college choices), highlighted files that might benefit from "special circumstances" letters (if the college offers weren't high enough), etc.. It's a very complicated process, but for some reason I picked up on it VERY fast and that's why my former supervisor (not the one who fired me this morning) was so insistent that I return.. I wasn't a "key" employee - meaning if I wasn't there, there was no one else to do the work - so I think my "firing" was more of a personal issue..

Anyhow - it's over and done now - and time to move on.. I've been in tough spots before - and I'm sure I will be in tough spots again.. My Dad always said, "The first 100 years are the hardest -after that it's all downhill.." - so - I only have 46 years left to go - LOL!! :teeth:

C.Ann, I'm so sorry that this has happened to you. It doesn't sound like he's the kind of guy to work for anyway. I know from the ebay thread, that you do a great job with your selling. I hope you are feeling better.

Oh, I'm sorry this happened to you.
This guy sounds like a jerk, and the place sounds kind of dishonest. I think there are places out there that will value you, and that you will feel better about as well.

So sorry that this happened to you. I agree that your health comes first though and I hope that it improves quickly!

Sorry to hear this, but I do think you are better off. There are plenty of jobs out there that will allow for sick time.

Hey, cuz...where are those plenty jobs????

C.Ann, eBay is a great unemployment plan! I've been on it for months!

I'm with Shep... and it sounds like this may be a blessing in disguise.

God bless,

Robinrs

I'm so sorry you were fired. What a loser boss to treat you that way.

But, I'm hoping it's one of those doors closed, window opens thing and you find a wonderful job that pays you lots and lots!
