Good message/bulletin board system?

I'm hoping I can ask this here - this is in no way something that would be in competition with the DIS.

BUT, I'm the member of another "just life" board that is being shut down. A group of us want to find a small home on the web for ourselves - a message board or bulletin board site. I've looked at EzBoards and Invision Power Boards so far.

Does anyone have experience setting up a small message board? Is it difficult? How much did it cost? What's a good service to use?

If you have webspace with a MySQL database, I am currently in love with the phpBB system. Easy to use, customize and administrate. And it's free -- you've got to love that.
