Many of you, like myself, have a child in college.
Good luck to them during, for many, is finals week - I hope they get good grades on their finals :wizard:
Also, I pray they have safe travels as many make their way back home for the Holiday season. 🙏

Questions for those that have kids in college......
How far are they away from home? (if you'd like to add where they go to school that is up to you)
What are they studying in college? What are they majoring in?
What grade are they?
What do they want to do with their degree after they are finished?

For Me.....My DD19 is 2 1/2 hours away in Indiana (we live in Indiana). She will be home on Monday the 19th.
She is a freshman and is majoring in Exercise Science. After her 4 years are done at this school, she will switch schools to get her doctorate in physical therapy and she wants to focus on Pediatrics.
When she's done with that she would like to work in a children's hospital or somewhere focused on pediatric physical therapy.

Our daughter made it home yesterday. Yay!

5 hour drive 🚗

She's a college junior majoring in Biology. Will get a graduate degree or doctorate and wants to do research. Is interested in all fields of Biology and has had hands on experiences in environmental and medical research areas. So we will see what opportunities she finds.

She's doing great with her grades.

She turns 21 this weekend and is the youngest of 4. All kids will be home so we are looking to do something special to celebrate.

Our older son has actually been home since mid-November. He's studying Mechanical Engineering and is in his 4th year of a 5 year program. Part of his program (and the reason it's 5 years long) are mandatory co-ops (4 of them), so from May to November, he was working in a company in Illinois for a double co-op (his 2nd and 3rd).

He goes back to school in January for the spring semester (in Rochester), then does his 4th and final co-op this summer and is back on campus all next year for his 5th year.

Ugh, my daughter at Clemson had a 12 hour drive tomorrow and the forecast is ice/snow. She’s a finance major but plans on starting to take her actuary exams next semester (she’s a sophomore with junior credits). My 21 year old is in her second semester DPT program at Boston university, she’ll be taking Amtrak home on Monday. She is not limiting herself to pediatrics, I think there are so many opportunities, especially rehab at nursing homes and she’s always had great chemistry with the elderly population. Fortunately she got her undergrad in 3 years, saving some $. Ds19 crashed and burned with some mental health issues last year and came home, started freshman year over locally, I think he should pull out A’s/B’s (at an easier university where he cherry picked classes using rate my professor), I think he’s still a business major.

Dd21 loves her program and her cohort (lives with 3 of them but they’re all very close), but it’s nothing like undergrad, classes are in the morning but they all stay on campus until the evening studying. Her first clinical is in Boston next month over break.

Our daughter is coming home Sunday and will stay through the 27th. She works and that is the only time she has off. She finished her finals last week.

She’s a Junior majoring in Nursing and she’s about 3 1/2 hours away from us in Ohio. Because she works so much, we don’t get to see her as often as we would like. FaceTime helps.

She turns 21 next week, just like @Southernmiss ’ daughter!!!

kudos to your dd for pursuing this field. my oldest is a 'shriner's kid' who benefited from their pediatric physical therapy. our local shriner's hospital now focuses the bulk of its resources to this area to the life altering benefit of so many who come from far and wide.

Thank you - she is feeling very confident in her decision to pursue this career. She engages with children and adults very well, which is imperative with pediatrics since she will not only be working with children, but as you know, also with their parents.

I live near a university with a very large international student population. They have a program where you can sponsor students who choose to or are forced to stay over the holidays. I've thought about looking into it but I'm not sure I fit the demographic they're looking for for sponsors. I guess I should look into it to find out. I'd enjoy it I believe.

What nice thoughts and wishes Slo...

My DS20 called me Saturday night while he was driving. He said "okay, going to hang up now, I just got home". Thinking he pulled into his driveway at his college house, I heard his key in our door and well, cue the waterworks! He was able to finish all of his papers and exams online.

Monday we're headed to Castaway Cay and back home for Christmas Eve. I'll have him home a couple of days and then it is back to school to grab his flight with his marching band to the Fiesta Bowl and then hopefully again a week later to LA for the NCAA football championship game. He's a busy kid! Pursuing a secondary ed degree but being a teacher myself, I am frustrated with the profession (besides he's not very passionate about it) and would rather see him invest in something else.

My boys aren't in college anymore but I'm wishing them, also, safe travels to our house and back to their homes especially when some wintry weather is coming our way next week. :cold:

So here's to safe travels for everybody, young and old traveling this holiday season. :santa:

Slo, I do remember well leaving college in River Forest during Christmas, jumping on the El, and heading to the train station in Chicago. It was a 3 hr trip home to Michigan. I was always very excited to get home and visit my parents and brothers and sisters. Only saw them 5-6 times a year . How is your DD getting home?

I agree with you Kitty - safe travels to everyone.

Great story - I’ve lived here my whole life and have never been on the EL - I really feel like I’ve missed out on something.

She is driving - she has her car at school.
The softball field is about 15-20 minutes away, so all players require a car.

DD, freshman this year, about 2 hours drive time away, but in a different time zone, and kind of a stressful drive through hills, lots of trucks/traffic on the roads. She doesn't have a car on campus (or home,) and rode back w her roommate last Friday. She was done early w exams. Glad she's home! Safe travels and happy holidays to all the others!!!

He's about 3.5 hours away at a large southern university in another state. He came home last Friday after exams.

What are they studying in college? What are they majoring in?
He has two majors: Political Science and Economics

What grade are they?
He's 19, a sophomore, but classified as a junior due to credits.

What do they want to do with their degree after they are finished?
He doesn't know yet, but he's doing the Accelerated Master's Program and took the GRE today and will start graduate level classes for his Econ major starting in January. He did a political campaign internship over the summer and has kind of ruled out politics on that level, but he still doesn't really know what he wants to do yet.

DD21 is a senior at U of San Francisco, about 2600 miles from home. She's an RA and has to stay until the very last second, so she's got an overnight flight home on Sunday. And she's only home for two weeks this time because she's spending the rest of the holiday break on a field study program in the Galapagos. She's a bio major, planning on going on to a phd in marine bio, and right now she's on the fence between going straight into a graduate program or spending a few years taking advantage of being young and location-flexible to get some field experience to help her narrow her focus.

I have 2 in school right now.

My oldest is senior about to graduate in May who is a little over 2 hours away. She will be home Friday for the weekend, but plans to go back to school Sunday to work Sunday and Monday. Her finals are done this week. She is majoring in biology and public health and is applying to graduate school.

Middle child is studying early elementary education about 3 hours away. She is a freshman although with AP credits plus 20 credits last semester she is probably a sophomore credit wise. Her finals were done last week so she has been home since last Thursday.

My boy came home yesterday - took his last final at 8, was on the road by 9. Thankfully - since the weather is absolute crap here now.

He is just about 200 miles south of us - we are in the Twin Cities and he is in Iowa. He is just off the interstate, so it it is nice easy, albeit long, drive for him. He is currently majoring in Business, but is not loving it. I told him he always has the opportunity to switch, but the career he wants requires a business degree, so he is going to try and slog it out. He is a freshman. And, his plan is to own a bowling alley...it has been his goal for eons, and bowling is his obsession/passion, so...

He has always said he wants to bring alleys back to the neighborhoods....place to hang out, have some fun, cheap entertainment. We will see. He gets discouraged pretty easily, so I can see him switching if next semester is as "boring" to him as this semester. We looked over all the majors his school offers last night and a few jumped out at him, but he isn't thrilled at the thought of "starting over" within a degree program. So...
