My wife and I are heading to Chicago in early March to visit friends. Planning on staying someplace downtown but not really sure where.

What is everyone's likes, dislikes?

I love the Seneca hotel, its right behind the Hancock building. Its a little older though so if you like more modern I'd stay at the Wyndham, its so nice!

Best one though is the Residence Inn by Marriott on Dearborn, its in downtown/magnificent mile. I LOVE LOVE LOVED it!

We stayed at Four Points right off the Mag Mile this summer. We were very happy with it and got a great deal. (It was an American Girl package, which I'd guess you're not interested in if it's the two of you. Check their packages anyway though, it was cheaper than just the hotel when we went. Included free parking + breakfast at the e.leaven cafe next door. (YUM!)
There also was a Trader Joes in the same building :thumbsup2. We had a microwave and fridge in our room, if we were there any longer than overnight, we could have gotten some food there to cut expenses.

 That probably would have helped. Magnificent Mile would be our best bet.

Also, thanks for the ideas so far!

We have always like the Palmer House Hilton, one block from the Art Institute. They often have specials on the weekend so check them out.

In Feb we are staying at ther Embassy Suites at Navy Pier. It is well reviewed and we got a good deal.

Personally I don’t think you can beat the Four Seasons, but that would have to be a special occasion for us!:rotfl: The Drake is perfectly Chicago and really pretty, but can be a little expensive. The Westin just south of the Drake was really nice when we stayed there a couple of years ago for a wedding. I would also recommend the Hotel Sofitel! When our families come for longer stays, they always stay at the Hilton on Michigan Ave. They've never complained and it's nice if you can get a room that overlooks the park. The only negative is that it's not as close to the shopping as some of the others.

Hope you enjoy Chicago... Please pack for cold weather... Even in March!

We stayed at the Hard Rock and it was nice. My wife's boss stayed at the Wit and it was really nice. Her co worker stayed at the Hotel Palomar I think. Great locations for all of them. I think the Hotel Palomar is attached to a mall or something and back behind it is this great Thai restaurant called Star of Siam.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. It has been helpful.

Thanks! Packing shouldn't be too bad...according to Google Maps we only live 157 miles from Navy Pier. Just across the lake in Michigan.

The Palmer House Hilton is awesome, we love it! Go at least once a year.

We stayed at the Embassy Suites NP for July 4th one year, really loved the location but it was a busy, busy place filled with tons of families. We learned breakfast survival was for DH and myself to go down and fill a couple of trays and bring back to the room to eat in peace. That weekend it was hard to find anywhere to sit. There is a bowling alley and movie theater attached and we used that one night when it was rainy. Tons of good restaurants near by and an easy walk to many many things.

We have also stayed at the other ES downtown, it was a few more blocks west of Mich. Ave very close to Rainforest Cafe. A bit longer walk to Michigan Ave but worked fine. Liked the lobby area a lot, had a corner room which was nice but very cold in Dec with the extra windows!

Lastly, have also stayed at the Hilton at north end of Mich. Ave on an adult's only trip. Really fab views from our room and the health club. Cute restaurant on first floor where we could have afternoon drinks outside or breakfast outside.

So many choices, we stay in the Hilton family as we are rewards members and use points when in Chicago.

I and my family stayed at the Hard Rock one year after I got a good deal on Priceline. We enjoyed the hotel, service and location.

We stayed here last year and loved it too. They have a complimentary cocktail hour and a great complimentary breakfast and even serve a complimentary dinner on a few nights. Also one of the employees will serenade you during service - she was great. The manager took his time with us making all kinds of suggestions on places to go and things to do. Room was nice and location was great.

We love the WIT Hotel. It is at the corner of State Street and Lake Street - perfect location and it was just built a little over 2 years ago. You are within the Theatre district and a quick walk to Michigan Ave. They even put a toy on your pillow at turn down! They also offer some super rates - 120.00 per night typically. Good Luck and Enjoy!

Our best stays are always Embassy Suites at State & Ohio. Great location. Breakfast included. Evening snack/beverages.

Depending on your budget almost every one mentioned is nice. The Four Seasons and the Peninsula are really expensive and the Palmer House & Hard Rock aren't really in the main Mag Mile area. Both of the Embassy Suites are great with the free happy hour and breakfast. I think the location of the Marriott and the Intercontinetal give you the best loactions becuase they are right on Michigan and you can walk North or South to explore the area. The two that i have stayed at that I would not recommend are Hotel 71, and Avenue Hotel (old Radisson).
