Need some help please. My daughter is 5, but she can already sound out words and knows many sight words. Help me out with some book selections for Christmas besides Fancy Nancy!
Thanks so much!

my daughter loved junie b jones as well as the magic treehouse series at that age..she was also an early reader

my daughter loved Junie B jones also and the Boxcar series and she was just getting into the American Girl books.

Have you read the Pinkalicious series? My DD5 can't read, but she loves Pinkalicious, Goldilicious, and Purplelicious.

When my dd was 5 she LOVED Amelia Bedilia. There are lots of books with her in them and they all made my dd laugh, very funny.

Magic Tree House, American Girl, Jan Brett (I love those illustrations). Check and see if Scholastic has a warehouse near you, they hold clearance sales periodically. Great deals on all kinds of books (goggle Scholastic warehouse sale).

My DD6, who is a very advanced reader, loves the Magic Treehouse books, the Fairy books (there are a ton of them written by Daisy Meadows) and is currently enthralled in Harry Potter #1. Hope that helps!!!

Im from California.

I would rather have to suggest to your daughter. to read them reader's digest..
There's a lot of story telling there that anyone can learn.

My daughter is reading quite a bit above grade level (she is 6), but she loved the "Stink" series of books by the "Judy Moody" author. She still loves Knuffle Bunny books by Mo Willems - sometimes picture books can have very challenging vocabulary. She also loves the Rainbow Magic series by Daisy Meadows. Amelia Bedelia is always good, Mercy Watson series, Katie Kazoo (more challenging) and she loves Geronimo Stilton--all the pictures are colored in Geronimo chapter books.

The "Froggy" book series was always a lot of fun.

Books by Judy Blume were great also.

Madeline's Christmas (any Madeline!), Milly Molly Mandy, Angelina Ballerina, Madonna's Series English Roses, etc....

My DD is 6 and in 1st grade. She loves Magic Tree House, Junie B Jones, Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

I also found one in the library I had never heard of, Ivy & Bean - she loved these! They were short and pretty easy reads, she would fly through them once she picked one up. The only problem is that the series is relatively new I think and there are only 4 or 5 books in the series (well, 6 I think, but I'm pretty sure one is just a journal.)

we love:

Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems

Don't Let the Pigeon series by Mo Willems

Gingerbread series by Jan Brett

Don't Give a Mouse/Don't give a Pig/ Don't give a Moose..etc by Laura Numeroff (nice hardbound books at Kohl's for $5 right now!)

We also like Madeline, Amelia Bedelia and Pinkalicious.

My dd is 7 and she loves to read. One I haven't seen mentioned yet is Rainbow Magic books. These are about fairies that are a different color of the rainbow. Another is the Cam Jensen series...it's a mystery series.

A great way to add some non-fiction into her reading is to pick up a magazine subscription for her. My DD receives "My Big Backyard" and "Ask." She loves the fact that they come in the mail with her name on them and she reads them cover to cover. I believe Carus publishing (they publish Ask, Click, Cricket, Ladybug, etc.) will even let you switch the magazine you receive if you find the reading level or subject area isn't quite right for your DD. My DD is a big reader and loves all the series mentioned already. She didn't really care for the literary magazines (Cricket) but she loves the science and nature ones.

My 7 year old was a early reader and loved the Frannie K Stein series about a little girl that was a mad scientist.

A lot of these are chapter books, if she is just sounding out words, you probaby still want picture books with enough words on the page to progress her reading. Amelia Bedelia was a favorite of my daughter as well at that learning to read stage. There is a lot of "starting to read" books at the bookstore, they were pretty hit and miss for us (one on sharks got worn out).

She'll move quickly to the Junie B.s and Magic Treehouses - but don't rush it or she may get frustrated. The idea at this point is that she enjoys reading enough to finish it. Not that she has to struggle through.

I agree with this advice. When my DD was starting sounding out words etc. we bought almost every "early reader" book at the bookstore - they're on a spinner rack (usually) in the kids section. DD liked the disney princess books and Dora (she was 4 at the time). Those books have between two and five sentences (depending on which level you buy) per page with a big picture. some are even designed like chapter books but they're much more doable for an early reader.

Like PP said, you don't want to frustrate her. Can't hurt to have a few challenging chapter books in the house (I second Junie B and Rainbow Magic) for when she's ready to step up, but if she's just sounding out you want to give her as much success as possible. Enjoy!

My DD loves Ivy and Bean and has the whole series...and the 6th book (they are all books) just came out in hardcover. I picked it up yesterday at Barnes and Noble for her for Christmas. :)
