Good books for six year old girls?

I second whoever said Angelina Ballerina! Also Henry and Mudge, though I forget the author. Amelia Bedelia you have to like the humor for.

Our compromise to a not-quite-ready for big books reader was to read them to her. When DD was 5 she read Amelia Bedelia, Angelina Ballerina, princess books on her own and evenings I read to her Charlotte's Web, Disney Fairies books, Junie B Jones, etc. She got the content of the more challenging books without the frusteration of the reading. I found it a good way to gauge her interest in book styles - because she's got to be one of a very few kids that has little interest in Magic Treehouse and Junie B Jones.

Junie B Jones and Magic Tree House are beginner chapter books which my daughter loved in Kindergarten! She read early and loved the chapter books.
Eric Carle and Jan Brett (easier reading) are also great books with more pictures.

There is a real cute "Bear" series. "Bear wants More", is one of them. It's rhyming, and fun to read. It has wonderful pictures and the words aren't too difficult.

Also, I just picked up, "If you give a mouse some popcorn...", (He'll want to string it on the tree... or there about) I think that's the title. It's a cute Christmas book.

More suggestions in addition to the wonderful ones before:
SkippyJonJones series
Jamie Lee Curtis' books
Madonna's books (they really are good!)
Little Bear series
Froggy series
Little Critter books (Mercer Mayer)
Arthur or Franklin books
Jamaica series
Madeline series
Dr. Suess books
David Shannon books
Click Clack Moo series
Diary of a Spider/Worm/Fly
These are all picture books--easily read to her or by her

If she is reading more independently, also try:
Babymouse series (these are graphic novels...yes, they look like comic books; but they have connections to excellent literature such as Romeo & Juliet)
Lunch Lady (also a graphic novel)
Just Grace series
Gooney series (Lois Lowry)
Katie Kazoo series

Thanks so much for this great list! The Babymouse series sound interesting...I'll have to look into those.

I have to second several of these, especially the Skippyjon Jones ones. My DD loves reading these books over and over. In fact, that is one of the things on her Christmas list is the newest book Lost in Spice (or something similar). Just love seeing what that little fluffer nutter is going to come up with next. :goodvibes

A slightly different choice is the "You Read to Me, I'll Read to You" series. The lines are in alternating colors to give each of you a "part". There is a nursery rhyme book, a fairy tale, and several others. Both my readers loved these in Kindergarten because of the interaction with the parents, and the silly stories.

The "I can Read" series by Harper Collins is great because the books are graded. They have a wide variety of selections, Fancy Nancy, Eloise, lots of Disney choices, some non-fiction.

Beyond those, I love Henry and Mudge, Mercy Watson, and Magic Tree House.

I do NOT like Junie B. Jones. I know I'm in the minority, but those books really irritate me. (But my DD likes them)
