He's a very good reader, I'm just looking for some ideas! :thumbsup2 TIA!

My dd is currently reading the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series by Rick Riordan. She really loves them and wants to read everyone in the series, she's on #4 now.

May I suggest the Percy Jackson and The Olympians series? They are fun, quick reads with lots of action. I bet he'd like them!

Maybe A to Z Mysteries by Ron Roy. Is he in 4th grade? Some of my TOP students start reading these books, I teach 2nd grade. They definitely won't be a challenge for him but I also don't think they are too young for him. Just some run stories to keep him reading! Kids LOVE these books.

It is time for the Harry Potter series if he hasn't already read it!!

He just started 5th grade and is used to reading 300+ page books. He's read some Harry Potter but not all.

Does he play sports? Or like to read about them? Mike Lupica is an excellent author who has written many books. Many of the kids in my 5th grade class like him. I have even read a few and have enjoyed them. Another favorite author is Gordan Korman--I have read No More Dead Dogs as a read aloud several times and the kids love it. Finally, do a search for Massachusetts Children Book Award Nominees. We have a contest in our school every year that revolves around these books. They're all fabulous. I often have kids who will read all 25 books.

The Artemis Fowl Series by Eoin Colfer
The Series of Unfortunate Events series
Chasing Vermeer and The Wright 3 by Blue Balliet
The City of Ember and sequals by Jeanne DuPrau
The Boy Who Saved Baseball by John H. Ritter
The Lionboy Series by Zizou Corder

These were some of my DS and DD's favoite books at that age/reading level...

I'll third the Percy Jackson books. Some other good ones:

-Inkheart (book about characters who come out of books.)
-Redwall series by Brian Jacques (fantasy with animals as main characters)
-Castaways of the Flying Dutchman series by Brian Jacques (fantasy)
-Anything by Bill Wallace (animal books.)
-The Giver trilogy by Lois Lowry (Giver, Gathering Blue, Messenger)
-Mr. Lincoln's Drummer by G. Clifton Wisler (story of the youngest person ever to win a Medal of Honor, the kid was 11 at the time.)
-Mick Harte was Here
-Goosebumps/Fear Street by R. L. Stine if he likes horror

I'll post more as I think of them.

My nephew is an avid reader and is also 10.

He reads a lot and we share. Here are some he read over the summer that I know of.

Holes (Sachar) - We both liked this one. Very good.
Hatchet (Paulsen)- Great survival story. Very well written.
The Golden Compass - Phillip Pullman
The Thief Lord (Corneilia Funke) - He read this last year in 4th grade and I read it this summer. Very interesting characters.
Inkheart - We both liked this and is so much better than the movie. Cornelia Funke also wrote this.

I am finishing up the The Lightening Theif series by Riordan. I think its good but certaintly not my favorite series.

My nephew also dropped off last week The Rats of Nimh.

I've also enjoyed the Konizburg books. The Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler was my favorite and a View From Saturday was also very good. Not typical boy reading though. Out of the 2 Mrs Basil Frankweiler would be more "boyish".

He is reading another book series but I can't remember the title. I'll remember I am sure and get back to you.

Also Wrinkle in Time is excellent.

And I recently purchased Bud Not Buddy which I believe is typical 6th grade book. And I picked up Graveyard. Looks interesting but haven't touched it yet, so I can't say how suitable it is for 10.

Just a note on the Giver Triology by Lois Lowry, while they are absolutely excellent and are at my nephew's reading level, I did not recommend them to him.

I had bad dreams after reading The Giver. They are very powerful books and may be suitable for some 10 year olds, but I would suggest pre-reading them. Especially The Giver. The other 2 in the series Gathering Blue and The Messenger are a better choice, I think.

My dd is 10 and is on the third Eragon book. Eragon, Eldest, Brisinger are the books.

If you want a "fun" book may I suggest the "daring book for boys"? It isnt a chapter book but its full of things my brothers grew up doing and my one of them got it for DS about that age and he read it cover to cover LOL he loved it!

Here is another vote for the Rick Riordan books, my DS11 loves them. The 39 Clues books are also good.

I forgot about the Eragon series. We all read that this summer, well BIL and my Dh listened to it in the car while driving to work but my nephew and I read the series. I enjoyed this series much better than the Percy Jackson series.

The Hobbit is a good choice. As well as The Lord of the Rings if he can handle the language and sheer size of the book.

IF he likes solving puzzles, this would be a neat book. I would call it a series, but there are only two and puzzles can be downloaded on-line.

The Puzzling World of Wintson Breen:

Our library lists this as appropriate for 3-5th grade.

Yea thats a cool book. My son was a bit younger when he liked it, but it is deffo worth getting if he hasnt read it yet! :thumbsup2

The Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage -the first one is called Magyk

The Children of the Lamp Series by P B Kerr the first one is called The Ahkenaten Adventure

The Graveyard Book and Coraline by Neil Gaiman
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
Number the Stars and The Giver by Lois Lawry
Holes by Louis Sachar
Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks
The View from Saturday by E. L. Konigsburg

Not a 300+ page book, but totally appropriate for a 10 yo, the baseball card series by Dan Gutman; honus + me, Jackie + Me, Shoeless Joe + Me, Abner + me, Mickey + Me, Babe + Me,

Other books that the oldest read included:

The Daring Book for Boys - loved it plus all the manuals that go along with it.

Don't forget the classics:

Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer

He's currently reading The Red Badge of Courage. He's supposed to read 20 pages a night as part of his homework. He's had to fudge his reports as he likes it so much he read a 178 pages the first night (oops).

He also liked:

Al Capone Does my Shirts by Choldenko

Really, anything Newberry Honor or Newberry Medal will be good. Just go to the library and ask to see the list for that age group or search Newberry on Amazon. There are so many great books on that list for that age group:

A Wrinkle in Time
The Phantom Toll Booth
The Witch of Blackbird Pond
Island of the Blue Dolphins
Johnny Tremaine
Across Five Aprils

All are excellent books. I have to admit Island of the Blue dolphins and the Witch of Blackbird Pond were two of my favorites when I was that age.
