margaret mitchell never intended to write a sequel to her masterpiece GWTW. she knew from the very beginning exactly how she wanted the story to end...and she ended it with rhett leaving scarlett, but her heroine vowing to get him back. she basically left it to our imaginations as to how WE wanted the story to end.
the "sequel" scarlett, by alexandra ripley, was alright. it wasn't the story that everyone liked...in fact, most die-hard GWTW windies won't even consider the book a true sequel. the movie, as compared to the book, was horrific. i enjoyed both, but i didn't think of them as continuations of my beloved GWTW. that's just MY opinion, of course! there are many other people who would happily disagree with me and that's perfectly alright.
i belong to a group of people who write their own ideas as to what happened to rhett and scarlett. it's pretty interesting to read!! if anyone's interested in the fanfic groups, feel free to IM me and i'll point you in the right direction.
i'm not into the slavery part of the movie at all, but i get swept up in the love story behind rhett and scarlett. his determination to make her love him...her determination not to love him...it's just a beautiful story...i do love the relationship between scarlett and mammy though. mammy keeps her in her place!
the movie just tells the story of a strong and determined woman who wants the best for her life. my DH has called me "scarlett" for 15 years! and of course, he's my "rhett"...thankfully, our love story's had a happier ending than the couple in the book.
