I was thinking about getting a golden retriever, but when I posted to get info on them someone suggested a goldendoodle.

This interest me very much! Due to the low to no shed!

Does anyone else have one? Could you post pictures of your goldendoodle?

The only other question would be how often do they get clipped? Is that expensive because it is a bigger dog?

Thanks! :)

I think they are in the same family, we have a cockerpoo
cockerspaniel and a poodle. TOTAL NO SHED, medium sized, 25 pounds and the MOST loveable dog ever

I groom him myself actually, it is more like Human hair, I do nail clipping and actually he was in the tub this morning. he likes it actually.

Anyway, grooming can get expensive and big dogs are usually atleast $50 around me, mine used to be 40 before I decided to take it on. No biggie and we both enjoy the "down time".

Meanwhile Petco by us does the shots for WAY less then the VET, they have vets come in, just another thing to consider.

Good luck finding your "friend" Dogs are great!!! :wizard:
Check out LABRADOODLES too!! (labs and poodles NO SHED too)

I have a goldendoodle! I could not ask for a better dog. She's very affectionate and was quick to be trained. My husband is terribly allergic to dogs and Izzy doesn't bother him a bit. She doesn't shed at all. The only down side is that she needs to be brushed every single day or she will get matted and the grooming needs to be pretty frequent. She gets her hair cut more often than I do! She goes every 8 weeks or so and it costs about $75 each time. If we ever get a second dog it will definitely be another goldendoodle. If I can remember how to put pictures in a post, I'll post a few.

OP, a Goldendoodle is a mixed breed (a mutt). There is no guarantee that any mixed puppy will be low shedding, hypoallergenic etc. They also come in all shapes, sizes and appearances for the same reason. If you win the genetic lottery, you could end up with with the worst characteristics of both breeds. Lovely huh?

If you like the breed characteristics of a Golden, get a Golden from a GOOD breeder.

If for some reason you really think you want a Goldendoodke, check out your local shelter. I bet they have a ton that need homes.

ITA!

There is no guarantee this dog will not shed. As the PP stated, it is a mixed breed, so its a total crapshoot. The dog is promoted to not shed, so people will pay $1000.00 for a mutt.

They are cute and I'm sure , some of them are darn good pets, but a coworker of mine has one and that dog sheds more than my 2 collies combined, and is hyper from sun up to sun down, no lie.

We have a labradoodle which is another poodle X that has been bred to not shed. Ours is a first generation cross, though so as pp have said you just never know what kind of cross you will get. Ours sheds a TON! I get about another dog out of him every week or so. He also, however grows long hair like a poodle so if I don't want long haired tumbleweeds floating around the house I also have to take him for regular clipping/grooming.

He's a GREAT dog, though personality-wise and the fact that he is a "mutt" means some of the genetic health issues of purebred dogs get phased out. (Maybe not in his generation, but along the line). Check with the breeder if you're using one on what generation cross it is - try for third if you can. If you're choosing a more mature shelter dog you can just take a brush along and see how much you get off in a couple of swipes.

Good luck choosing yours - doodles are great dogs - golden or lab.

Just get a standard poodle.

They're like goldendoodles without the stupid golden in them.

Kidding.

No, actually, I'm serious. Big poodle fan here (althought mine are now in smaller packages)

So actually that makes me a big small poodle fan.

Or is that a small big poodle fan?

Seriously, poodles have hair, not fur, and their skin is also different and there is no "doggy odor". Labs secrete an oil to keep their fur waterproof and *man* does that oil reeeeeeek. Standards are also extremely bright, happy dogs. Just make sure you meet the mother of the puppy and you like her temperament-if she's laid back and sweet, chances are her puppy will be, as well. Also, do the Puppy Temperament Test on your prospective puppy (google it). That test is dead on for what kind of dog your puppy will become.

I have to agree with the pp. If you really want a non shedding big dog, get a standand poodle!!

As others have mentioned any *doodle* dog is a mutt, I have nothing against mutts, I have one myself. What I do find wrong is people asking and paying upwards of $1000 and more for them!!

I just had to put my standard down a couple of months ago. We had him almost 13 years and I still miss him. I have no experience with Goldendoodles, but LOVE standard poodles and have no problems recommending them to anyone. They are super smart and loyal. Mine was great with our children. He was easily trained and just wonderful in every way. The biggest con was the grooming. Because they do not shed and we live in a hot climate, he was groomed every 5 weeks or so. I did it myself for awhile, but just couldnt keep up with it. Also, eventhough poodles have a reputation for being hyper, that is mostly the smaller ones as they were breed down in size from the standard; so while there are hyper standards, they are generally much calmer than the smaller poodles.

Goldendoodles are soooo cute! I have heard great things about them. I do not own a dog, but would consider a GD since they don't shed, are pretty much hypoallergenic, and since they are a fairly new crossbreed there are few health defects! Plus they are adorable!

We have a multi-gen labradoodle now and had a goldendoodle for a few months last year as well. I LOVE our labradoodle. He's such a sweet dog. His parents were an F1 labradoodle crossed with a poodle. He does shed some but nothing like any other dog I've ever had. My dd who is 5 is highly allergic to dogs, and has no problems with him. He lives in the house. We have him groomed about every 3-5 months. We like his hair long (looks a lot like a black sheepdog actually). We also have a special brush to use on him. Dh is pretty strict about brushing him every week to avoid matting.

We had a second puppy last year - a goldendoodle. He was a wonderful dog as well, but he was first generation (parents were golden ret. and a poodle). Unfortunately dd was allergic to him (his dander was more the ret. than the poodle). We rehomed him, and his new owners really like him.

Let me know if you have any more questions for me.
