Golden globes question-ricky gervais

If anyone is curious, Ricky posted on his blog about the awards show. http://rickygervais.com/thissideofthetruth.php
He said it is more interesting for people to create controversy than to just say that the show went well. By the way, if you go to the blog, you will see a picture of him wearing some funny underwear that he received from the Ellen show last week.

The HFPA might just be doing clean up in their statement. It'll be interesting to see if he is invited back.

As for Hollywood taking itself too seriously I saw a lot of laughter when they showed the crowd. I doubt that too many of them care.

My point exactly. He is LOVING this kind of attention right now. His HBO comedy show has recently started its new season. I've never watched it but I believe he bashes celebrities and the Hollywood industry. This will make people tune in and watch. Just to see what he will say and do next.

Even Ricky said he doubts he will be. That's fine...like the Oscars, the show needs to keep fresh and bring in new MC's every so often. Maybe Russel Brand or Howard Stern next year? :lmao:

I didn't think the show was any different than normal. The host usually says some stuff at the beginning, but then most of it is the presenters and then they come back for a second at the end...which is exactly what happens. I didn't think he disappeared at all...?

And if you mean the Ricky Gervais show (the animated podcast show), it is fabulously funny and they don't make fun of any celebrities, unless you consider Karl a celebrity now :rotfl2:

So if you were Johnny Depp one of the biggest stars on the planet with a camera man in your face....you are really going to walk out? No I don't think so. Just like when you think you are going to win and you don't and you smile and clap when you are thinking something totally different on the outside.

Was Ricky funny, I really didn't hear people laughing, I think they were being polite more than anything else. I am sure by the end of the night he could have said something alot more mean about Sandra Bullock but decided not to.

RDJ was FUNNY when he was talking about sleeping with the actresses.

Ricky was being a bully, that is how I saw it. Was some of it funny yes but are you that jealous of these actors that you have to be mean.

For Tom Hanks to come out and say what he did, people were annoyed. It just wasn't funny. I LOVE all the BBC shows, Eddie Izzard is one of my favorites and I love Little Brittan.

There were a few jokes that were funny but most was very mean and not funny.

I also think that the HFP is doing a clean up job because many celebs were not happy. Usually the host makes a little fun of the nominees but not like that and usually they make fun of themselves aka Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. Ricky did not, he was making fun of everyone else in a bad way.

Has anyone read anything about an actor/actress complaining about Ricky? I would think if the actors aren't smart enough, their agents must be smart enough to say if you can't take the heat from Ricky don't go. I thought he got a very warm welcome at the beginning.

These awards as pp's have said aren't really anything to brag about. I'm actually surprised that both Johhny and Angelina showed up.

I saw that movie and while I love both of them, I can understand the jokes. Maybe they really did think they were getting something :confused3

The Tourist was nominated for best musical or comedy. It isn't. Then why was it considered? Ricky was spot on.

I agree. Although the LAST line of the movie was pretty funny :rotfl:. I'm thinking someone was bribed but I think the FP paid Johnny & Angelina to be there ;).

What did Tom Hanks say? I missed it.

also did anyone see the backlash against what Robert DeNiro said? what do you think of that?

I admit haven't watched yet. But did any see the commercial promoting the GG sounds like he did exactly what was in the promo (he was being very snide about the actors and whole awards ceremony)so network and hfp must have agreed to it.

What is the backlash against DeNiro? What did he say that was so bad. I know he seemed miffed that they left out some of his less memorable films:confused3

I must have a really thick skin because I am not seeing all this controversy.

I should take a poll and ask if everyone here enjoys The Office. ;)

I like the American version.

The hoopla just goes to prove to me, once again, that the hollywood community takes themselves waaaay too seriously.

Though his jokes were probably more in line with a roast than an award show, at the end of the day, its just that a show. These "self-awarding" "self-congratulatory" award shows are kind of silly a and it was refreshing to see someone treat it as such.

I think the issue the hollywood award shows might be having is that the "stars" might not show up if they are being made fun of.. Really, sometimes they need to just get over themselves.

How is the Hollywood community taking themselves too seriously when people in Buffalo are complaining that he's a pompous blowhard?

Even if every single star he singled out said it was funny, that's not going to change my mind to say that it wasn't. I HATE making fun of people. It's just not who I am, and I think he was utterly tasteless. That's why I don't watch roasts. I don't enjoy them.

It's normal, everyday people who are also having this debate. Because we are the ones watching the show. We tune in, and the advertisers make money off it. If we didn't watch, there wouldn't be a show.

It isn't just for the stars. They might be the ones getting the awards, but it's the general public tuning in and having a blast... in some of our cases, in spite of the horribly crappy job the host did.

We're the ones doing pools to bet on who wins. We're the ones talking about the dresses with our friends and debating whether Social Network deserved to beat out Inception for Best Picture and we'll be doing it again in less than two weeks.

Awards shows are for the people who watch the movies just as much as they are for the people who make them.

I didn't see it as controversial either, it didn't even register.

He said something about the Hollywood Foreign Press not being in the back because they all got deported.........along with all the waiters.

I will really be looking forward to this. He will be stopping by to see Michael :rotfl2:

I just saw this and groaned. Granted, he may be okay as an actor (I was not one of the twenty people who saw The Invention of Lying and I've never seen the British version of The Office.)

As a person, he leaves a lot to be desired as far as I'm concerned, but I'll reserve judgment on the acting portion until I actually watch it.

What I haven't been able to figure out from the other night was whether or not Stever Carrell's reaction to him was genuine, joking, or scripted.

I am thinking they are friends, so my guess is joking and maybe also scripted/planned. They've had this type of back and forth before - nothing new. RG has also written for the US show before, If I remember correctly. Carrell has class and grace, so I truly doubt "genuine".

should be hilarious when he stops by the show - can't wait!

I didn't see the show, but I saw his highlight clips on E! and TMZ. I thought he was very funny. I've been a fan since his HBO series Extras. If he starts hosting more awards shows, maybe I'll even start watching a few of them.

No offense, but I hope for my sake that you have no reason to watch awards shows in the future!

I hate it when something I like and enjoy gets ruined. I have the dates for these shows written in my day planner months in advance and I really look forward to them. It's such a disappointment when the atmosphere turns so trashy.
