Golden globes question-ricky gervais

These people need to get over themselves. Obviously, a lot of Hollywood stars believe their own BS.

These award shows are ridiculous, the Golden Globes especially so. I didn't watch it but kudos to Ricky Gervais for taking them down a peg or two.

This is the kind of reaction that makes no sense to me.

This.

He was simulating "gagging" while looking away from Hefs man-parts. Hefs ex, Holly, was on E a few minutes ago and said she thought Ricky was funny.

That's what I saw. If he was simulating oral sex what was his right hand doing?

To be honest, I thought he sim'd oral sex too when we watched it at first last night. We've seen Ricky's stand up before where he does actually simulate oral sex during one of his bits and at first glance it looked like what he was doing.

HOWEVER, they replayed it a short while ago, and Ricky was clearly extending his right hand out as if he were touching/handling the ahem..."parts"...while looking away to the left and making a gagging motion while lifting his left hand up (slightly) to stifle the vomit.

rewatch the clip... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tueD59x8JUo (about :58 in)

This is the kind of reaction that makes no sense to me.

Why? It is my opinion, nothing more or less. I hate awards shows, red carpets, best and worst dressed, etc. etc. I find fawning over these people gag-inducing. So yeah, I find it amusing when their own hired gun was not intimidated and said some things the rest of us have thought at some time or another.

For the record, I do like a good movie and my disgust has nothing to do with politics (I am as liberal as they come). I just think our society is far too obsessed with celebrity.

I thought his jokes were more geared towards a "roast", which usually involves insulting the guests of honor. Having said that, I was not offended by any of his humor last night.

I think "good comedy" is very subjective. I thought a lot of his "jokes" were very mean spirited. He was trying to be edgy but went way too far. I turned it off because I thought he was awful and I don't like alleged humor at the expense of other people.
This.

As my sis would say, "he was a riot!" Much more entertaining than a ceremony where the stars' just celebrate themselves.

I just thought his attempt at humor fell flat. He was trying to be edgy, but most of his digs were about less-than-recent events with those particular celebs. I've not watched him before, but after seeing him last night I won't be inspired to in the future.

I will, however, continue to watch Johnny Depp, RDJ and the others in films.

Ricky never tries to be edgy. That's just who he is and I thought he was brilliant. It is a fake award show anyway, so what does it matter if he tells it like it is? The Tourist was a horrible, horrible movie.

I should take a poll and ask if everyone here enjoys The Office. ;)

That poll might be interesting - I wonder if it would reflect our varying opinions here on Gervais' hosting performance? I, for one, don't particularly care for The Office.

Variety is the spice of life, right? A little something for all of us. ;)

Some of the things he said! I don't know how he could walk amongst the people he "mentioned".

It is interesting, that he is still being talked about after the show. I don't know if it's a good thing for him or not. I'm leaning towards not. The talk isn't positive for him. But I guess it's all relative in Hollywood. Any press is good press, so they say.

The GG folks seem pleased as punch with the show.

UPDATE: The Hollywood Foreign Press and now Ricky Gervais have spoken out about last night's show.

But did they call each other out?

RELATED: What was the best—and the worst—of the Globes?

Nope.

According to the Golden Globes givers and the Golden Globes host, all is well.

"We loved the show," the Hollywood Foreign Press said in a statement to E! News. "It was a lot of fun and obviously has a lot of people talking."

"When you hire a comedian like Ricky Gervais, one expects in your face, sometimes outrageous material. Certainly, in this case, he pushed the envelope and occasionally went too far," the group continued. "The HFPA would never condone some of his personal remarks. Overall, however, the show was among the best we've ever had and we were pleased."

According to Gervais, there are no hard feelings between him and Hollywood, either. "Everyone took it well, and the atmosphere backstage and at the after show was great," he said in a statement.

And as for that long gap on Sunday's show in which Gervais was M.I.A.? It was a long gap, Gervais explained—nothing more, nothing less.

"I did every single introduction I was meant to," Gervais said. "…I was allowed to choose who I would introduce in advance. I obviously chose presenters who I had the best jokes for. (And who I knew had a good sense of humor)."

I guess it depends on what you read. I don't know.

I read the statement of the HFPA.

Yep. I posted this statement from the HFPA last night on page 4 of this thread. All is well.

Hefner's post-show Tweet:
The Golden Globes was a blast. They made fun of everyone, including Crystal and me. A great night." He added in a further tweet: "I'm used to cheap shots. ... It goes with the territory."

About Sandra Bullock, he said something along the lines of how nice she is even though she just told him backstagethat poor people were gross and smelled bad (paraphrasing here).

People are reacting exactly the way Ricky expected. 2 days later folks are not discussing the winners of the golden globes they are talking about him hosting.

Though I laughed at some things and winced at others, I certainly wasnt offended by anything he said. The hoopla just goes to prove to me, once again, that the hollywood community takes themselves waaaay too seriously.

Though his jokes were probably more in line with a roast than an award show, at the end of the day, its just that a show. These "self-awarding" "self-congratulatory" award shows are kind of silly a and it was refreshing to see someone treat it as such.

I think the issue the hollywood award shows might be having is that the "stars" might not show up if they are being made fun of.. Really, sometimes they need to just get over themselves.
