Gold Annual Pass logistics question?

Hi all! My mom and I currently have Gold annual passes (we are DVC members) that will expire May 9, 2017. We have a trip coming up on May 27, 2017 and plan on using an AP for that trip too. We are debating between renewing or repurchasing the passes. Currently on the DVC website, they are running the 13 months instead of 12 promotion for RENEWALS of AP (it mentions nothing of that promotion if you buy a new pass). Obviously we would like to get that promotion which would require the renewal. I am seeing that I can renew the pass with the discount up to 30 days after expiration. Is this correct? So if I say renewed on the day before we leave (May 26) it would expire June 26,2018?
Next question: we are staying on property for the May 27 trip so FP+ day is Mar 28. If we don't want to renew the pass until mid-may there will be a gap between when our current AP expires and a new one would start up. Will the system therefore not let me make Fastpasses after May 9? Because there technically wouldn't be a ticket for the May 27 yet?

You'll need to renew before your FP booking window opens to be able to book for your May trip. The system will know that you don't have valid ticket media.

If you renew, you keep the same expiration date. So with the promotion, your pass would expire June 9, 2018

If there was just a difference of less than a month, 3 weeks in your case, I would just renew the AP, and it would expire on Jun 9, 2018. It doesn't make sense to buy a new one. The last time I bought a new one was in Sept. My old AP expired in late May, I wasn't going back until early Sept. Made more financial sense to just buy new since I wasn't going to use the pass for 3 months! I'll renew it in August, so it will expire in Oct 2018!
