We'll be staying in the Orlando area for a few days after we leave WDW... where is the nearest/best beach to visit? All opinions are invited and welcome!! :thumbsup2

Although it's close to a 2 hr drive, I'd head over to the Gulf coast for the best beaches. The sand is beautiful and the Gulf is a lot warmer than the Atlantic side. St. Pete's Beach is nice.

In March we stay in New Smyrna Beach which is on the ocean side. Very nice area just south of Daytona. Take I4 to 44 east about 75 min.

My vote would definitely be for the Space Coast area, Cocoa Beach in particular. It's the closest beach to Orlando -- about 45 minutes to an hour to get there (depends on traffic). From Cocoa Beach on down the coast to Melbourne Beach, you'll find lots of family-oriented beaches and lots to do too (Kennedy Space Center and the Brevard Zoo, to name a couple). :)

I also love the Space Coast (Cocoa or Sebastian Inlet). It all depend what you want. Space Coast has some big waves and currents so if you are not an experienced ocean swimmer or have little kids, gulf coast might be better.

I used to surf in my youth so I go for the narly waves dude. (I have no idea how to spell narly)

Is the Space Coast area close to Vero Beach? We are thinking about a trip to Vero Beach next summer and anxious to get any info available about the beaches along the way.

Yes, Vero Beach is at the very southern end of what I know as the Space Coast, although I don't know if it's "officially" designated as such :)

last year we spent time on Daytona beach and loved it all though it can get busy and loud if there is something going on while you are there
