As you can see from my name, I live in Mississippi. I'm in the capital which is about 150 miles inland. We had trees down here along with loss of electricity for days. The winds were about 50-65 even this far inland. My son was 5, about to turn 6 on Sept 1st when Katrina hit. He still talks about the hurricane. Everytime he sees a limb down, he says the hurricane did it. We have been to New Orleans several times and he has seen some of the despair there. I tried to keep him out of the most affected areas. We did go down Elysian Fields so he saw the flooded cars and the X's on the houses. He also go to see ppl gathering in the median while a truck unloaded diapers, formula, water and other necessities. He was amazed that ppl had to stand in the street to get things. We are going to Moss Point, a community on our coast, Saturday with the hospital where I work to build a playground with the KaBoom network. They go around to areas and do a blitz build of playgrounds in one day. I'm taking my son so he can play with the local children and see that even though they've been down they're not out. He's going to be able to help them paint plaques and pictures to put in the playground. I think it'll be a great learning experience for him. I don't know that any of you really care, but I just felt like sharing! LOL!
