I think I asked this already -- but I'm going to Gettysburg next week, any last minute tips or advice on things to do, places to eat, etc. Thanks.

Go to where Picketts Charge started at sunset. Go to Little Round top and sit on a rock and look out over the battleground. Just do so in silence. Really moving.

Oh...have a wonderful time!!!! I think I posted on your original post about Gettysburg.

- buy the audio tour CD (I can get you the info from the one we bought if you need it)
-get subs and have lunch at the VA memorial
-visit the book store at the visitor's center
-get out of the car and walk away from the crowds, think about how much history you are surrounded by
-try Mark Nesbit's Ghost Tour at night!!
-visit Devil's Den
-try to find a re-enactment if any are going on (we found one about the artillary that was so interesting!)
-talk to a park ranger-they are always full of interesting info
-visit the cemetary
-walk through town, find the Farnsworth House and look at the outside wall of the building
-in town at the square there is a pub (The Corner Pub???) They used to have the best Bloody Marys!!
-keep your eye open for spirits.....I believe they are really there
-enjoy the quiet and respect most people give to the area
-go off the beaten path
-at the VA memorial stand below the statue of Lee, lok in the distance and you can see the statue of Meade (I think that is who it is)...they are facing each other, ready for battle
-take note of the memorials-they are all unique

Finally,
-take note of the horses on the memorials-all 4 feet on the ground the rider survived; one foot raised the rider was injured; two feet up the rider died in battle

Have a wonderful time. It sounds like it will be a beautiful week!

oh....one more thing....ask a park ranger what made the Confederates fall apart at Pickett's Charge.....it is a cool story!

OK...I'm done! ;) ;) ;)

I went to college in Carlisle so a few times we went on trips to Gettysburg, especially for geology lab. On one of the little bridges over a stream (you drive your car over it) near the big rock outcropping (little round top maybe) there are stones with dinosaur prints and mudcracks in them. Not only an american history lesson but also a geology lesson. Can't remember all the geologic signifacnes of the site but I do remember the geology did influence the battle ( ie high spots and low spots).

Gettysburg is a great historical place to visit. We've gone the last two Octobers during their annual humongous apple festival. Definitely visit Devil's Den if you get the chance, see a reenactment, go on a ghost tour. You will definitely have a wonderful time.

We'll miss you by a week, we're going 4/21!!:D

Just one word of advice. Under NO circumstances eat a General Pickett's Restaurant. Last time we were in Gettysburg we ate there and were sick as dogs afterward.

Only advice I have is to have a great time! :D

It's been several years since we where there but we "rented" an official volunteer at the park or info station (don't remember which) who drove our car on the audio tour and gave us the info in his own words. Much more informative & ineteresting and DH did not have to concentrated on the roads. This was an official tourist spot.

We would do it again in a heart beat. Are there any DISers out there that can fill in the blanks for me?!?!?!
