"Going to Disney for the weekend, BRB!" October 2011 PTR-Update 10/6-ONE DAY!!!!!

Just a quick update: Finals went very, very well. I ended up making the Dean's List for the first time with a semester GPA of 3.74. :cool1: I'm taking summer classes and so I will be getting a nice financial aid refund for summer classes alone, and that will pay for the rest of our trip. The rest of our room payment is due in early June, and then I need to buy our park tickets and MNSSHP tickets. Dates for the party have been released and October 10th is indeed a party date. :thumbsup2 There's really not too much more to plan for the October trip, at least until the F&WF menus are released! But starting on Tuesday, I plan to do a brief recap of last May's trip, since it will be exactly a year ago! Crazy-it feels like it was yesterday!

For our January grad school scouting trip, I plan to fly Southwest, but I'll check other airlines too. Delta, American and US are the only ones that fly into Gainesville, so we will probably just end up flying into Jacksonville and driving the 70 miles to Gainesville. We plan to do University of Florida, University of South Florida, and then visit WWoHP.

OK, I was just pricing Orlando area hotels for the January trip. The onsite Universal hotels are just too expensive, and even the offsite ones are a little pricey! So here are some options (prices are total for two nights, including tax, if necessary):
Pop Century: $184.50 (we could get a AAA discount on this)
AKV-Value Studio at Jambo House: $180
AKV-Standard View Studio at Kidani: $220
OKW or BWV-Standard View Studio: $200
(Renting DVC points for these, of course)
Which would you choose?

Alright, let us begin the next section of flashbacks: One Year Ago Today. :thumbsup2 My goal is to tell the story of each day of the last trip in 25 pictures or less, since that is the photo limit. Let's go!

One year ago today, at exactly this time, (2:26pm) we were on a plane headed to Orlando.

May 18, 2010-Magic Kingdom. One year ago today at this time (3:18pm) we were waiting for or riding on a bus to head back to MK after our break.

Day 3 Count: 19 pictures.
Up tomorrow: Disney Studios. (I'm hoping to go to Target tomorrow morning to get a camera cord so I can import the early morning pictures. If that happens, you will be the first to see these pictures since they were taken a year ago!)

Exciting news! Today I did two very important trip things: I mailed the rest of our room payment and I bought our Halloween Party tickets, which are now tacked to my bulletin board! :cool1::banana::woohoo: Now all that's left to buy ahead of time are the park tickets, and I'm going to do that before the prices go up, usually around August 1st.

I've joined several new threads to help me plan, including the Official October 2011 thread(s), the Official MNSSHP Guest List, and the Official MNSSHP Planning/Info thread.

I've also decided to learn how to cook this summer since I will be living in a townhouse next year. Thanks to the lovely DISers on the Disney Recipe Exchange board, I was able to make a cookbook that is 80 pages! I just made the Key Lime Pie recipe from Olivia's and it is delicious!

I was showing Mom the Yacht & Beach Club thread and we got to the posts about restaurants. This picture:

had her going "Oh my God, crab legs! I want to eat there!" :lmao: Then we looked up the price...$37/person. :scared1: She instantly declined. I posted about it on the Y&BC thread and Teena, a CM at the BC who posts over there pointed out that it is a buffet and a pretty good deal. I talked to Mom who agreed, because seafood is expensive. So we now have a ressie for 5:30pm on October 7th, our arrival day. :thumbsup2 This means that we will be scratching the plans to go to AKL for dinner, but that's alright. Looking at pics of the YC/BC/BCV + Boardwalk have me convinced that there will be more than enough there to keep us occupied on the first day. And if we should decide down the road that CMC is too expensive for our budget, we can just cancel. I'm not a big seafood eater (I'll probably stick to the shrimp and fried cod) but I'm sure I can find plenty in the non-seafood sections: Ribs, Potatos, Chicken. If nothing else, I can live off the kids mac 'n' cheese and chicken fingers (but I don't think Mom would be too happy with me!)

Where to start? Well, first, I've been spending a ton of time over on the Yacht & Beach Club FAQ Thread. The folks over there are awesome: knowledgeable, caring, and funny. If you ever have a question about those resorts, definitely head over there!

I've also joined the W.I.S.H. thread, and have signed up for their "Biggest Loser Summer 2011" Challenge. I'm hoping to lose 20-40 pounds before we head down in October.

Yesterday I re-worked what will (hopefully) be our final food budget, subject to change when the Food & Wine Festival menus come out! Mom got tired of me figuring to the penny, so I rounded EVERYTHING to the nearest dollar. That gave me $520, so then I rounded up to $600 for good measure. :rotfl: That's $300 each, and then we're each bringing our own spending money.

I'm also buying the park tickets as soon as financial aid gets their act together. I e-mailed them yesterday to politely demand that they look over my "Application for Summer Financial Aid" form that I turned in TWO MONTHS AGO. Until they do, I don't actually get the aid dispensed that they have projected I'm getting. I need the aid dispensed so I can have my refund, buy the park tickets and pay off my credit card.

I plan to buy a new camera for this trip. I just want a point and shoot and my budget is kind of limited. I'm considering a Nikon CoolPix, two Sony Cybershots, and a Kodak EasyShare. Does anyone know anything about these or have any input?

I was saying to Mom the other night how nice it is to have almost everything paid off 4 months out. She asked me, "Did that not happen last time?" My answer was, "Well, last time from the day we found out we could go to the day we arrived was just about 6 months, so no. I've been planning this one for over a year!"

Over the next few months I will be posting our daily plans as they become slightly clearer.

But for today I leave you with this. If you read my TR, you may recall me mentioning the fact that I bought a Mickey Mouse initial ring at the Poly gift shop. I had been attempting to find this ring online for 3 years before that. I was also not able to get a good picture of it once I bought it. Well, last night Mom was on the Disney Store website and she just happened to stumble across it. :rolleyes1 So here it is, my treasured initial ring that I wear all the time. It's held up quite well! (There was also some other nice jewelry that I might buy, but I'll save that for another day.)

Pretty ring!

Nikon Coolpix are generally a good point and shoot. Sony is good too but the only downside is you have to buy the Sony branded memory cards which can be pricey sometimes. I would stay away from Kodak EasyShare. I hear those camera are lackluster, even for a simple point and shoot. Don't go too cheap but you can probably get a decent one for around $150-$200. All I can say is read reviews, read reviews, read reviews! YouTube might also have some video reviews that will show the camera you're interested in in action. Hope that helps :goodvibes

The Nikon is what I'm leaning towards right now. Did not know that about the Sony memory cards, so thanks for that tip! All of the ones I'm looking at are between $100-$150, and I spent several hours looking at reviews of them last night. It seems that people think they are great, or they hate them. Really no in between.

The camera we have right now is some GE model that I bought for $100 a few years ago. Right now I'm just looking for something that is slim and can fit in a pocket and that doesn't have a huge delay between shots, and something with its own rechargeable battery. Some people were talking about differences between delays with certain memory cards but it was in photography language which I don't speak yet :rotfl:

Hey there Gretchen! I am so glad to find your latest PTR! Hope summer is treating you well so far!

Double post! I forgot to subscribe before I clicked submit on my last comment, LOL!

One is the Four Parks, One World CD that I've heard many rave about including Jen and Brook.
400128246487.jpg

What souvenirs do you like to buy when you're there?

This CD is AAAAMMMMAAAZZZZINNGGGG! It's got a great mix of park and ride music and classics from movies! I listen to it a lot and even used the first 3 minutes of the Impressions de France song to use in one of my recital pieces at Valley School of Dance last year.

Some exciting non-Disney news: my group has been cleared for an on campus townhouse next year! We pick the actual house on Thursday evening, and our selection number isn't too bad, 11 out of 24. The only real negative about the houses is that the washers & dryers are in a completely separate building at the end of the complex-no fun when it's blizzarding!

They provide us with the basics: couch, chairs, table, dining chairs, fridge, stove, dishwasher, bed, dresser, desk, and more closet space than I know what to do with! However, we have to provide everything else, including a microwave, toaster, and vacuum. I was looking on the Target website for bathroom things the other night and the first row of items that came up were all Mickey related-I think it's a sign! :rotfl: Plus, amazingly enough, that set is cheaper than a generic zebra print set! If you've ever moved before, what might I need that I'm not remembering?

Lighting! I can't remember if they give you lamps or if there are overhead lights. Remember all the other kitchen-y things like plates, cups, bowls, baking dishes, measuring cups..... And cleaning supplies! Luckily the bathrooms are small and easy to clean in a couple minutes. A Vacuum cleaner. I agree with Brook, you may want to bring extra garbage cans since I think you only get one recycling bin (but don't take my word for it).

I have a Kodak EasyShare camera and I love it. I mainly got it because it has a 10x zoom, so the only thing I really don't like now is that it is a bit bigger than other ones (but still not as bulky as an SLR). But it takes great pictures...the colors are always vibrant!

I don't think I mentioned it, but I had Brook pick me up that CD when she went in March, so I own it now! It's great-Impressions de France is one of my favorites one there. I love the "Syrinx" flute solo that starts it; my flute teacher at Geneseo played it at a recital a few years ago.

I believe they provide lights, or at least the two people we will be living with that live there now haven't mentioned needing lights. I have a bunch of dishes already, and several of us will be combining our stocks of cleaning supplies. Someone has a small vacuum, and I will add garbage cans to the list!

My summer is going very well! I hope things are going good for you down in Ithaca. :goodvibes

The trip is getting closer! We're finalizing plans! So here our are day before/arrival day plans, complete with pictures (all from the DIS or wdwinfo).

Gretchen, you've got a great first day planned out!

Can't believe it's coming up so soon.

I'm oober jealous you will get to swim in SAB. :rotfl:

What a lovely first day, and you don't even go into a park. Those surrey bikes are tons of fun. I hope you get a great view of Illuminations :goodvibes

Gretchen, you've got a great first day planned out!

Thanks! It took some time but I finally came up with a good plan that doesn't involve us running all over the "World." Now all we need is for the weather to cooperate so that we can nap by the pool if need be, otherwise that 3am wake up is going to kill us!

I'm oober jealous you will get to swim in SAB. :rotfl:

Current me is jealous of future me for getting to swim in SAB! :rotfl: My roommate and her brother rented a surrey bike when they were in there and January and said it was a lot of fun! I really hope we get an Epcot view from our room cause then we can watch from our balcony in our PJs, but the Boardwalk bridge will suffice nicely. I also want to hopefully see/hear the Inferno Barge burnoff one night!

First, some more trip related ramblings.
1)I didn't have the money to buy our tickets before the price increase today. (Two months earlier than normal! WTH Disney?!) But after all is said and done, total extra cost will be a whopping $12.78. So not too bad.
2)I got a new confirmation e-mail from Southwest this morning. I was like, "Oh no they changed our flight times!" But no worries, we're just getting home 10 minutes later, still leaving MCO at the same time (7:15pm).
3)We've pretty much decided on the Nikon CoolPix s3100. We went to Best Buy and Target to test them out, and although neither had a working/charged one, we were able to test the s4100, which is almost the same, just with a touch screen.

Now, on to Day 2 plans!

Day 2
I'll get up early to grab us some breakfast from Beach Club Marketplace.
MarketplacePastries.jpg

Around 8:15 we'll leave the studio and walk to the International Gateway, hopefully arriving to wherever they are holding people no later than 8:45am. As soon as the rope drops we will head for Test Track, where I will ride using the Single Rider Line (predicted wait 11 minutes) and Mom will get us FPs for later (predicted return time 9:35am).
TestTrack_01.jpg

Photo from wdwinfo.com

We will then head over to Mission:Space-Green where I will definitely ride and we'll see about Mom.

As soon as we finish and assuming our FP window is open, we will high tail it to Soarin' to get FPs for that (predicted return time ~11:45am). Then our crazed power walking will end for the time being. We will leisurely explore The Seas Aquarium and Innoventions.
InnoventionsEast_00.jpg

We hope to do, among other things, The Great Piggy Bank Adventure and the interactive video game thing. We would also like to sign up for a Kim Possible adventure.

At promptly 11am we will head to the back of World Showcase, near America. We will browse the booths back there and also stop to see both the Voices of Liberty and The American Adventure.
F-USA-01.jpg

Photo from wdwinfo.com

We also want to stop in Germany to indulge in some yummy treats from Karamell Kuche. Around 3pm we plan to head back to BCV for a nap and/or swim. When we return to Epcot around 6pm, we will use our FPs from this morning to ride Test Track and Soarin'. Then we'll head for dinner at Sunshine Seasons. MMMMM Strawberry Shortcake.
GEDC1497.JPG

Picture is mine

After dinner we will more than likely hit up the character spot and Spaceship Earth before heading back to World Showcase. I think we may get a treat to share from Boulangerie Patisserie.
DSC08548.JPG

Then we will attempt to find a spot for IllumiNations, which plays at 10pm that evening. Afterward we will walk back to our villa and head to be in preparation for another day at Epcot!

OOOOOO, what a great EPCOT day! I would totally recommend trying Club Cool, but just be careful because it can get very crowded and sticky in there. Voices of Liberty are so great, I make one of their shows a must-do every trip. Good strategy starting World Showcase from the middle and working against the crowd from there.

I am glad you enjoy the school bread (Me too, it's one of the only times I will eat coconut ) but check out more the Norway pavilion has to offer. It's my favorite area in all of EPCOT. Maelstrom is old, cheesy and silly but I love it and the shops have some really great stuff. Helly Hanson brand of outdoor wear is really good quality and keeps me warm during NY Winters for sure! There is a perfume they sell there called Laila that smells amazing, too. They have a cool selection of children's books that tell different Norse legends and fairy tails that I like to look through, it's interesting how many of them we tell our kids in America and don't realize they originated in Norway. But, if all you have time for is some school bread then you've already experienced the best part of Norway! :thumbsup2

I'm hoping if we get to Club Cool within the first few hours of opening it won't be too sticky/crowded yet! School Bread is one of the few times I eat coconut too; I hate the texture most of the time. We did explore Norway a little bit last trip after Maelstrom. The shops were super crowded though and the few things we looked at in the stores were waaaay too expensive.
