Going from giving presents to just a card

Has anyone ever had friends that they gave Christmas presents to for years and then decided that they were only going to give a card? I have neighbors who I have been friends with for years. We used to talk on the phone frequently and see each other often because our children played together (and we babysat for each other). Now that the children are older and don't play together much anymore (and we no longer babysit) and we don't talk as much anymore, but do see each other occasionally on the street, I am not as inclined to buy a gift anymore. We are still friends, not drama or anything, just aren't as close. Has anyone ever demoted a friend from present to just card?

that is something that is hard to do, but I think it is perfectly acceptable. When you babysat for eachother it would have been kind of a thank you gift for helping eachother out throughout the year so in my opinion a card in fine, but send your card early so you don't get a present from them and have to exhange a gift with them.

This has happened with me with quite a few friends. It's something we usually mentioned casually beforehand, though. It was awkward, but for me it was less awkward than if I'd received a present after only giving a card.

Or what about doing more of a token thing like making them cookies or something?

Yes, thats happened with several different friends and groups of friends.

Usually, someone suggests their budget is tight & suggests an ornament exchange, or a cookie - baked goods type of exchange.

This year a group of friends decided to donate to Katrina Hurricane Relief instead of exchanging gifts. Everyone readily agreed.

I think the idea is just to acknowlege the special friendship shared, especially at this very special time of year.

I love the cookies idea - if only I could bake I do agree that I should mention it beforehand, because I would probably feel much worse if she still gave me a gift. Thanks
