So I went and signed up with Cable Internet this morning..got the self installation kit...how hard can this be?

After 1.5 hours of Tech Support, I have now done the following:

Purchased a Ethernet Card to install on this here desktop

Purchased the Windows XP upgrade to be installed on this here Desktop

WHY you ask?

Because running Windows ME, USB issue's abound. I know this because of the problems with my printers, webcam and digi cam....so sure enough, the plug and play features dont work as they should, and this cable modem wont recognize itself...yup!

So I decide, to do the full windows XP wipe out...I start sending these 480 pictures from WDW in April to my CDRW drive....no go- for the life of me, it wont formatt the disk, it wont copy it wont do anything but make funny noises at me!....

So, here I sit, WAITING for this dial up to send these pictures to my yahoo mail account.......yup- thats what Im doing....ALL OF EM....if I run outta room, I'll send some to webshots.....

Hopefully by the time I finally go to bed (its already 1115) I'll be running cable interent with XP, a ethernet card, and a wireless router for my laptop...........

If I dont return, well, I blew up the computer!

we are going computer shopping tomorrow. You are scaring me on what it is going to be like saving all our stuff.........lol I know nothing about the things.

LOL! I hope you haven't blown it up yet. Sounds like a nightmare. At least you're giving it a shot. When I moved a few months back, Verizon sold me on DSL. Ha! They sent me the modem and an e-mail saying call them when I receive it for directions. Ha! I got the guy on the phone. Right off the bat he told me what I would be charged my first month. I told him nope! The original person I spoke with said I had a 30 day trial period. He didn't go for that. Said they could do it BUT... So I told him I hadn't even opened the box and would be returning it. Yup. :) Now, if I eventually go with cable, they'll definitely be here doing the work!! Have fun!!!! Hope you get all your files worked out.

...do I love my Macs!!! I hooked my Airport up to the cable modem and was online within 2 minutes. My husband never could get his wireless card to work with his Windoze work PC, so when he needs to use it (his work network won't allow acces from any other computers) he hooks an ethernet cable to the Airport. Most of the time he just uses my "old" powerbook.

Hope you are up and running soon...it's great to have high speed.

Yep, I love my Mac Ibook too. It was very easy to hook myself up and I know nothing about this kind of stuff either. Good luck with your project. :)

I had a very nice computer with Windows ME on it. I also had dial-up a the time. I really started getting to the point that I could get nothing to work on my computer. I figured a lot of it was ME issues. I finally just went out and purchased a BRAND NEW computer with Windows XP on it. At the same time, I switched to Comcast Cable so my new computer never had dial-up on it. It actually only took about 30 minutes to get it up and running after the cable guy dropped the installation kit off and my door. I am serious. It was easy. I don't store a lot of photos and stuff, so my backup situation was not a big deal at all. Overall, I was amazed at how easy it was.

The worst part for me was dealing with the cable itself after years of using dial-up AOL. I never had to do anything with AOL since it has it's own virus/firewall/pop-up/spam protection imbedded. When I got cable everything just went nuts and I spent quite a few days getting everything "guarded." That really sucked.

Sorry you are having so many problems. I really hope your XP upgrade works. I ended sending my computer to a friend who is a tech. He removed my ME operating system and installed Windows 2000 (which is supposed to be better). For some reason, I am still having problems installing some of my son's games. I can install these games on Windows 2000 at my office so I know it is not the OS. How could there actually be something wrong with the hardware????

When we first got cable, I could not get it to install properly on XP. Called tech support, "yes, we are having that problem with XP", he gave me a way around it. Has been great ever since.

As mentioned previously, the pop-ups were insane at first!

I have 5 computers on 3 floors on a wired network with my laptop on a wireless... have XP though, not sure I would like that on ME...

Backing up things is very important, get yourself a flash drive. Plug it into your USB, put stuff on it, and stash it somewhere, the thing is very small, some of them are keychains.

My sister has Cable and I have DSL, hers is MUCH faster than mine. Going to change over when my DSL contract is up.

I be a computer geek and I win the wars of the computer if I have to keep tech support on the phone all night. lol, they know me by voice now and I don't even have to tell them my name, cause they know it, lol
