im going back to be a massage therapist..:teacher: i start in april .. is there any on the boards. that are massage therapist?..

Not to be a Debbie Downer but I wish you all the best in your chosen field. I have a couple friends that are massage therapists and it is a HARD, HARD, HARD field to make any money--there are just way too many of them out there. Start making connections now with physical therapy/athletic medicine clinics and chiropractor offices because those are going to be your best chance of making more than minimum wage.

i know a few massage therapists. largly they enjoy the work. i don't know how all of them are doing in the current economy but in the past they've said the best thing they ever did was to take the steps to be able to be providers such that they can bill workman's comp and standard health insurance (opened up a wider client base).

one friend was an EXCELLENT massage therapist but she was kicking herself big time for not opting to take certain classes that were offered at the school she went to. apparantly in the state she lived in you could become certified to practice there but unless you took additional coursework your licensing and certification was'nt transferrable anywhere outside that state (and she was looking at having to move out of state). i imagine it's something to consider.

you might want to look at what types of speciality massages are'nt widely available in your area it could give you a niche in the marketplace. hot rock and those for pregnant women were high demand where we used to live as well as where we live now, but in both areas it was slim pickings to find an independant therapist who was qualified (most were only offered at overpriced spas).

is i have a strong feeling if i go while the economy is down and maybe next year when i graduate the economy will be up.. and more people will be at ease to spend the money at that time.. im very interested in the stone and the pregnancy massage which i just found out about.. iwouldnt mind working in a retirement house..

I live in a town which has a massage therapy school, and it seems that most people here have a degree from there, and find it very difficult to find work. Good luch just start working on finding work as soon as you can.

is it common in your area for retirement places to have massage therapists?

just curious b/c i've never heard of it. occupational therapists maybe (usualy toggled into the activities) but i've never known one to have a cmt on staff.
