I'm changing my career path after 15 years working as a real estate agent/property manager.......I have recently enrolled in a nursing program at a great college here in Michigan. How many out there have changed careers this late in their lives? I'm nervous but excited about this!

I am also 35 and stared school last Fall to become an early childhood teacher...I want to work with preschool or Kindergarten aged kiddos, maybe special needs. It wasn't until I had my own DD who has Autism that I realized what I wanted to be when I grow up! More power to you!! I also know a woman I used to work with in property management that decided to go to Med school at age 34!!

Good for you. I worked in the corporate world for 24 years. I moved and went back to school to get a MS in Education. I now teach students with Autism and Mental Retardation. I like my new career. However, the money does not equate to the level of education required.

I was in my late forties when I went back to school for my master's. I was scared too. However, in colleges... most people are women over 30.

That's great!! I went back to school at 29. It was tough but I don't regret one minute of it!

I too went back.....and will graduate next year (at 35) from nursing school! Good luck! It will be tough, not just the going back to school part, but nursing school in general-a lot of different studying than I had ever done! You can do it!!

Congratualtions! That's wonderful!

My mom started in for her Bachelors's degree when I was 13. At one point, there were three member in our household in college at the same time. She worked really hard for 11 years taking a class here and a class there and finally graduated.

We are all very proud of her!

JudyTL~I taught students with disabilites, including autism before leaving my job to become a SAHM. I totally agree with you about the pay vs. the level of education required!

Good luck to you and every other poster who has had a similar experience. I think it is great and bet you will have no problem with success.

I'll be 30 this august and I start my RN program 7 days after my bday. Better late than never :cool1:

I will jump in here, because any time I have an opportunity I have to brag on my DW I will. She had a great job as a buyer at a major department store chain and decided to become a SAHM when our oldest was 1, ( we have 2 DSs 8 & 4). We had him at our church's preschool 3 days a week from 9 to 1, and she started teching the 3s while our son was up there. This is something she has continued to do now that our youngest is going to school there. SHe has enjopyed it so much she started back to school at 33 to get her education degree and teach elementary school when our youngest gets to first grade. She has a perfect 4.0 GPA since going back. I think it is a great thing to go back, so good for you and all the others that do this.

Thanks for the support....I have always wanted to be an RN, but family and $ took precedence over what I really wanted to do. Not that we can afford to go down to one income, but I think with a good budget and a realistic approach, it should be manageable. My 3 kids (9,13,14) and husband are also very supportive. So thanks again to all of you!

I was in the banking feild when my husband & I were married
18 years ago. We both decided I would stay home with our kids
when I got pregnant. After 3 kids we decided to homeschool &
still do so. Our oldest will be a senior next year & I have decided
to go to nursing school. I am going to do most of my classes at night
& will probably take more than the 4 years to complete the courses.
By the time our 6th grader has graduated I will have my degree.
I have always wanted to be a nurse :) Everyone else will have been
taken care of so it will be "moms turn" :goodvibes
I wish I would have gone before we got married, but I didn't so this
is the route I am taking now :goodvibes
I will be 40 in December, so I will be starting my new career @ the tender
age of 46 :thumbsup2 But it is going to be so worth it, I really
wouldn't change it. I got to stay home with my kiddos & if I had
gotten my degree I probably would have wanted to go back to
work right away & I would have missed all of that.

congrats! If I may ask, what school are you going to? (I'm from Michigan too ....)

I now work in admissions for a University and we see a lot of people coming back, especially for the nursing program - best of luck to you!

Wow!! Congrats to all!! You're all inspiring to this SAHM, who thought I was too old to start a new career! I was in the mortgage industry for 8 years or so, when we decided I would stay home with the kidlets. I'll be 35 this year and will be looking for a new career path later this year. Kudos to those ready for a fresh start! :thumbsup2 Best of luck to all!

good for u! BEST OF LUCK! :grouphug:

I wish you all the success in the world.
I am currently a college student, I will assure they are plenty of pple around your age. Doing the same thing either changing careers or going to school to get themselves a better career.
So try not to be to nervous, or anything about it, and do your best.

I will be attending Schoolcraft College which is a community college in Livonia, and from what I know, has a pretty good nursing program and the money you save in tuition per credit hour, was a no brainer.:) This process was a long one for me. There where a lot of credits that I needed before I could even enroll in the program. If I decide to further my degree, I may transfer over to Madonna University...also in Livonia for my bachelors in Science.

I have an AS degree as a Respiratory Therapist. But I have a SAHM for the past 5 years. I will be 40 this summer and I am going back to get my degree in Social Work this coming fall.

That's Great!:thumbsup2 I always wanted to be an occupational therapist and work with the elderly, but my mom thought it would be a good idea to become a teacher. I listened to her and am now an elementary school principal. I love my job and believe that I was meant to do this for a special reason, but I still feel a void and wish I could have followed my heart. I'm a little too old now to start all over, but I feel so proud of people who are able to. Best of Luck!

I cannot believe how many of us Disney loving SAHM career changers there are:) I am surprised to see so many that have created the same crazy path as I! As I said, I was originally in the corporate world, then a SAHM (kinda - did a little babysitting for extra $$), then started back at school after the birth of my third child.......next year I will finally graduate from nursing school, a few credits shy of my BSN, and maybe I will go back eventually-we will see!

when I saw your post I thought it must be HFCC, that is where I go, but nope I was wrong. Good for you, and how awesome that your family is behind you. My H wasn't, which is why we are now divorcing. well one reason. :rotfl:
Good luck to you, you will never regret it!

How much is a credit hour at Schoolcraft?
