The plan this morning as it will be for the majority of the trek mornings is to have breakfast at 7am and then get packed to leave at 7.30am when on a moving day! As today was the first day we were packing up Michael demonstrated how to pack the tents and then we set about the van demonstration. Everything went well and we were on the road by 8.40am. Soon we were passing Pismo Beach along the PCH.
Then we came across the Madonna Inn which is well known for its quirky interior design! We stopped here for a look around and also to get a snack if we wanted one
As the road near Big Sur had suffered a landslip in the spring we were unable to take this route so have to go on the 101 for some of the time instead. As we went northwards the landscape started to change and became greener and there was alot of agriculture in this area we saw fields, of flowers, broccoli and other such foods.
Suddenly there were fields of oil wells!!
Then as it was lunchtime we stopped at a rest break on the 101 and made our lunch from the coolers. Then it was time to head on with the journey to Monterey. We arrived in Monterey mid afternoon and had the choice of spending time in the nearby Fishermans Wharf or going further into Cannery Row. I along with 5 others went to Cannery Row. It was as I remembered along Cannery Row.
We browsed in some shops then stopped at the Ghirardelli cafe and I got an ice cream
As we were told it could get quite cold at night several of us achieved our mission to buy a nice warm jumper! Then we went to get the trolley back to the van, which took longer than expected so arrived 20 minutes late
Luckily the drive to our camp in Marinas was a short one and the area we had to camp in was lovely. Tents were soon all up and Michael cooked dinner, this was the last dinner he would cook as after today we would be into 4 groups and take turns to do the cooking, as well as dishwashing and van cleaning.
After dinner as it was a lovely evening we all went to the nearby beach to watch the sunset. On the way we passed the sand dunes and an interesting sign!
The sunset was beautiful
As the sunset we had fun on the beach and then as the light faded headed back to the campground for our first campfire and smores, as demonstrated here by Michael.
It was now dark and as we were moving onto Yosemite tomorrow we all headed to bed.
