go left... or go right?

I've read somewhere that one of the lanes will be shorter because people tend to go to one lane than the other. The problem, is, I can't remember which one.

Is it the left line up tend to be faster... or is it the one on the right?

Most people automatically head to the right. Left lanes are almost always a little shorter. But keep in mind, you could have 8 individuals decide to go right, but one family of 22 decide to go left. The differences aren't huge.

We are firm believers in the "go left" rule of thumb.

As we approach crowded areas, you can hear my DH mumbling "go left, go left..." :p

I had always heard that since most people are right handed they just naturally gravitate to the right when given a choice. My son did his science project on that premise: he observed traffic patterns for loading at several rides in Six Flags over the course of a day, and statistically the left lane was always faster (i.e. had less people in it at any given time). However, there were abberations as mentioned above (a huge group walking in at one time, line hoppers going from the right to left side midway if the line "looked better" etc). From personally experience, I can tell you the slowest line is ALWAYS the one I am in, whether it is at WDW or the grocery store!

Quickly decide and stick with it. Otherwise you will take more time deciding whether to go right or go left than you would save if you were lucky enough to end up in the shorter line.

One time a co-worker remarked to me, why not use the caps lock key to TYPE an occasional word IN CAPITALS and I actually said that it take me longer to decide whether the passage to be typed in capitals is long enough to make reaching for the caps lock key worthwhile compared with just holding the shift key. For me it is better to do one thing exclusively which for me is holding the shift key and not have to think about it and make decisions.

I had read here to "go left". So we did (most of the time) while at WDW. Going left almost ALWAYS was longer!! I think it's because I chose it!! I'm like catnik, whatever line I'm in is the longest!!! Oh well, it's WDW--we eventually got to ride!

Joshsmom:

Do you think it is genetic, that no matter which line we choose, it is destined to be the longest? I seem to always pick a line where the person in front of me will have a pricing issue, or the staff member is new, or where the equipment breaks down right before it is my turn. Kind of like the lottery; I do an exceptional job picking 6 numbers that NEVER get pulled! I think there should be some sort of job I could find that would put all my "talents" to use......any suggestions??!!

Back on subject: Joshsmom is right...we all get to the front of the line eventually......and we'll be on a line at WDW in 4 months :sunny:

Most of the left vs. right has been answered for you; it is called FASTPASS. It now takes away one of your choices.

I think by now that many people are aware of the "most people go right, so you should go left" rule (we've heard it for years). So much that whatever difference there was in the lines has been evened out by now.

Of course, occasionally there's an anomaly one way or the other, but its tough to predict. And you ALWAYS notice when you've picked the wrong one!!!
