Okay, we just decided at dinner tonight that we want to go to Hilton Head the week of August 9. We have already had our family vacation just a few weeks ago but HH is calling our name. I was researching our usual favorite places to stay and DH said, "why not use our points?" We are VERY new members, haven't even closed yet. We have 230 points to use. So, break it to me gently, do we have ANY shot of getting anything at HHI at this short notice?? Go ahead, I can take it ;)

I would say your chances are very, very low of getting something at HHI then. But it never hurts to try. Your only chance would be in a 2BR.

I agree but never say never. HHI is usually in high demand through Labor Day or just before due to school schedules. Give it a shot. The worst they can say is no.

While we were there last year in early August and the resort was filled, you never know until you make the call if there is availability.

You might have a shot at a 2 bedroom....

Sending you bunches of pixie dust.

Keep us posted

Perhaps you can book on cash and hope some of the days convert to points as you get closer. We stayed at HHI for six nights earlier in June, all booked on member discount cash. As we got to the week before the trip, I kept calling member services for cancellations and ultimately got three of those nights converted to points.

Inside 30 days you might have a chance at a day here and there due to cancellations. You might be able to stay on cash as well. You could also try for an exchange to one of the Marriott's there using DVC but given it's short notice, you might have to call every day as well. You should make a cash backup if you're set on going.

I would think that best bet would be to rent some points out and use the cash proceeds to book a stay conventionally.

Just wondering if they called this morning to see if there was availablity??

Well, I called this morning and no real luck. There was a studio one day, a 1BR 2 days and a GV one day. So, we went on the waitlist. I'm not sure how it works, but she said that would end 31 days out, so July 9. Do I need to continue to call to check or just wait? I'm not terribly optimistic but I'm hoping.

I just checked redweek and there are a couple of rentals at Marriott's Barony Beach Club if you would consider that route. $2100 for the week in a dedicated 2 bedroom. Just thought I would toss that out there!

Like Dean said, 31 days is prolly your best bet because that is the last day people can cancel and not lose their points, but I would call back and get on the 7 day out wait list, if you can travel on such short notice, why not hang in for some very last minute reservations.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I did think that there might be availability at your time because many school systems will be started back by then. I know that we start here in AL on August 7th.

my kids don't go back to school until september 4 on Long Island, ny

Aahhh! A light bulb just went off. I had always wondered why Magic season didn't start until June 10. We are out of school in mid-May, but I guess most other folks aren't out until June...

We are out just before Memorial Day here. You got it!! We were able to get an instant trade into Aruba last year with our other timeshare for Memorial Day week because of that; most schools are still in. Those first couple of weeks of June are great travel times because crowds are lower for the most part. Same goes for the last couple weeks of August if you are lucky enough not to start back until Sept.
